New VW ID Polo Review – The £22k EV That Fixes VW’s Biggest Mistake!

The brand-new VW ID Polo begins at ₤ 22,445– which makes it the cheapest way into an electric Volkswagen, and the cars and truck VW is hoping will lastly make inexpensive EVs feel normal. However with the Renault 5, Hyundai Ioniq 3 and MG4 Urban all defending the very same purchasers, being cheap isn't enough by itself.

In this review, we test the new ID Polo on UK roadways, determine its real-world effectiveness versus its closest rivals (on the same path on the exact same day), and tell you which battery and trim level make the most sense.

You'll find out:
– Just how much the new VW ID Polo costs– and why regardless of a ₤ 1500 government grant it does not undercut the Renault 5 or Hyundai Ioniq 3
– Main range for both batteries– up to 205 miles from the 37kWh version, 281 miles from the 52kWh
– Real-world range and effectiveness– we drove it back-to-back with a Renault 5 and an MG4 Urban on the exact same test loop, swapping drivers
– Charging– peak rates of 105kW and 88kW, and the 10-80% time for each battery
– Boot space– 441 litres, which is more than a Golf or ID.3, and much more than a Renault 5
– Driving– trip convenience, managing, performance and improvement
– The physical buttons VW has actually restored– and the infotainment system that lastly works!
– Interior quality, rear area, pulling limits, safety and what the forthcoming GTI will bring

Simply the nicest design. One thing – reverse camera in base trim as standard and add rear vents.

Would you choose the new VW ID Polo over the Renault 5, Cupra Raval or Hyundai Ioniq 3? Let us know in the comments!

Hyundai ioniq every time. Renault 5 is over hyped and drives like a drain.

I think its a good step in the right direction, but i preferred the look and feel of the Cupra Raval this time.

      The 5.
I like how the Polo is built but it looks boring and apart from the base versions, they are expensive .
The Raval looks very nice but I would prefer a car with normal door handle

This is all we wanted VW. For you to keep the good design/names and make them into somewhat affordable EV’s. You could have saved BILLIONS just sticking to your already proven concepts and designs.

The VW Polo is a great looking car going back to more traditional styling, which is brilliant. It is on a shortlist if I want t keep the price relatively low. As for this video being sponsored by POD, great, the only CPO that I know of that you have to top-up your account before you charge, rather than simply pay for what you actually use. I have credit stuck in my account with POD that I can not withdraw or spend

@OmeNeil Yeah. It is a bit more expensive to have no aggressive direct and indirect government subsidies and no stupid after-sale subscription plan.

      Worth it. 🎉

Those people buy AUDI, SEAT and SKODA versions. VW has you all covered. VW doesn’t design zombie killers, is a plus.

There are 170 EV models in the UK so there’s actually a fair number that aren’t SUVs. Around 50% according to Google though some may be obscure models.

I like the look of the Id Polo.
I think in the cabin, it might not be much smaller than an Octavia, slightly shorter maybe.

The economy figure sounds great, but ideally you would use the percentage used and distance travelled to get a more accurate figure, because manufacturer’s instruments rarely tell the truth.
I’ve never got the same calculated efficiency as what’s shown on the instruments.

I suspect manufacturers massage the numbers in the upper 50% as most people will tend to keep battery charged up above that level, but distance travelled in the lower 50% may not be as good as the top 50% in real life.

Good to get the comparison, but I’d be inclined to use calculated figures rather than the instruments.

The ID Polo is classy rather than flashy and that’s good, in my view. The build quality is probably better than the equivalent Renault. It’s a car that will appeal to many people for the reasons the Polo and Golf always appealed. The GTi is very well priced in the Irish market.

When the car comparison test comes up, I hope they discuss the fact that the heat pump is an optional extra, vs standard on Renault 5, which might be more suited to UK. I suppose with less range Renault opted to include it to extend winter range.

I have the Cupra raval mainly because the looks, interior with better steering wheel with paddles but we could not put up with the poor vw dealer we had near to us. It’s a great little car but still have a few vw software problems they are famous for.

I went to their little “showroom” at Battersea a while back and the ID Cross was also there as well as the GTi version of the ID Polo. What a trio of beauties. The ID Polo is gorgeous and on the inside? Lush and amazing quality
