New 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5: improvement or disappointment? / Electrifying

#ioniq 5 #hyundaiioniq #electriccars

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 made a huge impact when it showed up in 2021 – wowing owners with its madcap style and ultra-fast charging capability. But even the most ardent of owners would admit that there was space for improvement. Charging speeds suffered in cold weather and performance was little more than average.

To address these and other issues, Hyundai has introduced a number of little however substantial engineering updates to its 2023 version. The updates include a larger battery for the long range model along with a new battery preconditioning function that intends to enhance charging speeds in colder conditions.

Join Mike as he takes a close take a look around one of the very first new designs to land in the UK. Have the changes addressed the early issues? Should the Ioniq 5 still be at the sharp end of your wish list?

Battery Preconditioning update for older Ioniq 5 designs
If you have an earlier variation of the Ioniq 5 and want to make the most of the new battery pre-conditioning function, there's excellent and bad news. If your automobile does not have actually battery heating fitted, then it can't be applied. If your cars and truck does have it, there are three things that require to be updated. The very first two need to be done at the dealership. The work is described as a TSB – Technical Service Publication and the number you need to price quote is: HFE22-17-E080-NE. The official title of the update is: BMU IMPROVEMENT – NE EV BATTERY CONDITIONING FUNCTION AT LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURE LEVEL (BMS/VCU _ 2WD_4WD/ AVN). Keep in mind that this isn't categorized as recall work, so the dealer is within their rights to charge you for their time. As soon as the 2 dealership updates have been applied, you'll require to update your nav system (). You can do this yourself by downloading the upgrade from the Hyundai website, putting the file onto a USB and moving it to the cars and truck. We'll be covering this more in a future long term update of our own Ioniq 5.

As always, we 'd like to find out what you believe, so please leave your remarks below.

Really can’t see any difference between any of the years… 5 or 10 miles difference…. Is a joke! So is the 5 or 10 bhp. Battery heaters is a must on all BEV’s. But more interested in Hyundai actually making more BEV’s…. Not just saying they are making more. But at the new prices… It doesn’t even compare to a Tesla Model Y.

May I ask who sponsored this video? Hyundai perhaps?

Really liked the Ioniq 5 and ordered one last year – but I got fed up of waiting, with a delivery estimate of around 8-9 months at best. I bought an MG instead – the Ioniq is a better car, but the MG was 25% cheaper and available………..

Huge problem Hyundai. Making good and popular EV’s they can’t deliver. 12 months and it’s an old model you ordered. If Hyundai can’t step up their production….?

Is it too much to ask that you know the difference between kW and kWh?
    Good video otherwise.

Well for me and hearing that news that the flagship model will cost almost £58K , puts it well outside my future range and to be fair I have been looking at Micro-cars to replace these big, overwhelming road congesting cars that everyone seems to be putting out, not that we need them as not all of us have school runs to complete twice a day. That is my two pence worth !!

Shame they have gotten rid of the SE that’s what I have. May consider going premium smaller battery when my lease is up, but still lots to come out in the next 2 years

I’ve been waiting almost a year for mine to be delivered, it’s beyond a joke now. Hyundai are a shambles!

Hyundai has got grave problems with their capacity in production. I don’t expect it will be any better with the Ioniq 6.

Im test driving a model y next week. £52k or so. More range, SC access. If this did 400miles I might be interested. There are issues with the model y as well but for those less picky than me its a no contest this is £10k too much.

Model Y is fine, as long as you don’t mind the suspension being a bit “shopping trolley”. I had a car a few years back that was over firm (Citroen DS5) and although I thought I could live with it, I couldn’t. Had to get rid after only 11 months. I’d be very wary now of any car that reviewers thought was a harsh ride.

@Richard thanks. I’ll pay particular attention to the ride. I am in no rush to buy so who knows maybe an air suspension model might be on the way 😀

Still no rear window wiper? I’ll give it a miss.

    Nice presentation

Impressive car. I considered it but chose a Volvo C40 which I’m really pleased with

Looks good to me! I just wish Hyundai had decided to include a rear window wiper on the “refresh.”

You don’t need one, unless you’re not a rally driver. Too many issues with a whiper/electric motor on a trunk door and too expensive to repair after all doorbanging. Costy in production as well (probably the main reason they skip it).

The only downside I can see is the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. 🙂 C’mon, talk your government into going with the rest of the world and switch sides of the road and steering wheel already! Otherwise, great car!

i really liked this car but they moved the pano roof to be only on the Namsan and i don’t want digital mirrors, it’s not even an optional item, the colours are meh! great design not packaged correctly for me… so i ordered another brand… oh yeah on my salary sacrifice lease it was 54wk lead time!!!

Have a look at the GV60. They’ve got cars in stock. similar car and just a bit more upmarket.

The suspension has also been updated. It’s much more stable on the road.

Is it me or is he really tall? He makes the Ioniq 5 look like a VW Polo

Tried one in 2021 – really good car but 2 things it me off. 1) Strangely shaped boot, very shallow due to the steep rake and more importantly 2) No rear wiper.

Come on Hyundai this ‘the aerodynamic shape washes rain away’ is absolute pants. The test drive car I tried had a dirty back windscreen and you could hardly see out the back.

Such a pity – ended up going for another EV but the rest of the car was lovely – massive interior and smooth quite ride.

I think the battery management improvement is the only update which counts…

Still one of my favorite EVs out there, so definitely like the improvements they’ve offered with the 2023 model. Having said that, as cool as exterior cameras are, they all share one flaw – In inclement weather, specifically rain, they’re useless. Once the camera lens has water on it, you cannot see ANYTHING on the screen. At least with a mirror, you can still see enough to drive safely. So, unless they’re going to put tiny wipers on the wing mirrors to keep the lenses clear, they’re not really an upgrade from the standard wing mirrors. Aside from that, I love the tech. Just doesn’t feel like that bit has been particularly well thought out by the design team.
