ID. Polo First Drive: A true Volkswagen?

The Volkswagen Polo is back– however this time it's electric. And after years of progressively futuristic-looking ID designs, VW is reviving something we have actually all been requesting for: proper buttons and switches!

Batch gets behind the wheel of the brand-new all-electric VW ID. Polo to see whether this might be the small EV that brings Volkswagen back to its roots. With as much as 280 miles of range, an option of 37kWh and 52kWh batteries, a 435-litre boot and VW's new MEB+ platform, it's going head-to-head with the likes of the Kia EV2, Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq and Renault 5.

But is the ID. Polo Volkswagen enough? And can it truly be the electric successor to one of Europe's best-loved little cars?

    Surprised but actually love it more than it’s Cupra cousin the Raval, VW nailed the new iD Polo 😍😍😍👌 design is spot on, interior great, Renault 5 you got competition 🤟.
    Just can’t wait for GTI version to hear if it’s still had original GTI fire.
    Great video keep it up team 🤟 and Renault 5 vs. iD Polo 🤔👏

    If I step back and forget my interest in cars, to a layperson that’s a new Golf. Dimensions have grown to be Golf-sized, looks very much like one, packaged like one. Looks like an evolution from the Mark 7/8 to me. Sounds like a return to a proper VW. Well done.

    I do think though that £28k (£26.5K after grants) is a lot for a 52kWh battery car – realistically it will do 200 to 230 miles range.

      Day to day I get over 280miles from my 52kwh VW iD.3 in summer, so I assume you are talking about motorway range

      @snaenaeyerbusiness yup same bought a used one few months ago. And charged it few weeks ago for a try first time to 100% and it showed 520km~ range and after driving for a while now it sits at 344km and 65% battery thats no highway just your typical commute to work/shopping stuff so max speed till 90km/h occasionaly else mostly just 50~70km/h. So a very efficient car in my eyes atleast during summer will see how it does in the winter, will surely loose some range but shouldnt be some massive drop off.

    VW needs to discount those at minimum to £3750 off RRP. thats expensive for the 52kwh model IMO

      You can get the slightly larger Skoda Epiq for similar money, and that’s before we consider the cheaper or larger Chinese models.

    The order books suggest this is going to be a very popular and hopefully successful model for VW. Other car manufacturers should take note and lean into nostalgia – other than the Puma I couldn’t remember any of Ford’s current range

      I wouldn’t say it is even the nostalgia, rather competence. It looks retro, because well VW had their stuff together. They went all techno gaga for the launch generation and then people knobbed them over the head “You are the bloody VW, why are you re-inventing the wheel, badly. Just make a bloody electric VW”….. They understood the coughing from the peanut gallery… I mean customers and made an electric VW.

      I almost think some in the company foresaw this or atleast thought the techno futurism a risky proposition, since none of the first gen were afforded the valuable name plates. Instead they got… almost prototypish “here are new suggested concept models 1, 2, 3 and 4. As you see we aren’t really sure about these, we didn’t bother naming them.”

      @aritakalo8011 true, few people are likely to throw £25-30k on a car because they learned to drive in one 20 years prior. Maybe “trust” is a better way to describe it, especially for new-to-EV purchases where unfamiliar brands might be deemed too much of a risk.

    I hope for the eventual facelift they will look in their design archives and bring some 80s or 90s references to the fabrics and overall interior. They must have some great commissioned designs from the previous decades, do what the fashion houses do, use that design heritage in a meaningful way not just default to boarding room grey.

      No I missed the eggs. My Style Launch Edition is scheduled to be built this month. November cannot come soon enough. Listening to your review I’m happy that I decided after much deliberation to go for the ID. Polo over the Cupra Raval.

    The boot space is almost as much as an MG5 estate (440 vs 464litres). Amazing
