BMW i5 eDrive40 – All electric 5 Series maybe the best BMW EV so far ! | 4K

The eDrive40 is the first all electrical 5 Series and is perhaps the very best EV up until now. We initially saw the 5 Series in 1972, 51 years later the 5 Series ends up being the last section of to be energized. The is such an important and truck for BMW and it is good to see an EV that isn't an SUV!

Lovely looking car. More efficient than my i4 M Sport. And better handling from reviews. Good work BMW!

    Great test Ped, as always.

I think the estate version of this will definitely be in my sights. Unless the charging infrastructure improves markedly in the next 12 months though, then it’s likely to be as a plug in, rather than a full electric.

What experience do you have of the UK public charging infrastructure?

Sorry you didn’t get to keep it longer Pete, It’s been great driving different i5’s from a personal point of view and seeing how they have performed over the last few weeks , especially since the weather has dropped. I am certain this car will be the peoples choice . ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Interestingly my new to me 2008 Volvo XC70 SE Sport D5 with a full tank shows me a range of 600 miles using good old heavy oil. So would never have range anxiety. Plus it only cost me ยฃ12k with 18,000 miles.
I sold the Lexus CT200H as I am not going electric โšก๏ธ

The sound that the 5 series makes is pure London Underground ๐ŸšŠ ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

Just had i4 35 as my company which was great. Lucky enough to have just been given i5 40 as my next car which is simply fantastic. Your right about the bongs though๐Ÿ˜‚

A real shame Hendy donโ€™t do BMW (AFAIK) as the i5 would make an interesting long-termer.

I like the i5 a lot and itโ€™s really good to see another non-SUV EV. Like you Iโ€™m looking forward to the estate version.

I5 looks an impressive package. Just not getting excited by the move to electric cars. Canโ€™t wait to hear more about your opinion of the M3 Touring. Now that is my kind of car. Next step up from my M340i Touring.

I’m liking them less and less. I don’t like the way they are being pushed as so environmentally kind …and we know that they are not, all things considered. I dont like the way they keep exploding either.

Another great review Pete I am not a fan of these EV fake grills but this one looks better than most. I love to see a review of comparing the i5 to the Petrol version. I expect the latter would put an even bigger smile on you.

I think they’ve nailed it by the sound of things. It’s a car, not a spaceship, it looks relatively handsome and drives well. Classic 5 series DNA.

Love it. The new BMWs I think are really quite impressive. Looking forward to driving an i5 fairly soon.

My 530D is Euro 6 and has a range of 650 miles on Eco Pro. Range anxiety is really stressful, you end up in a right state! Sold my EV 3 months ago pleased itโ€™s gone.

Very interesting. It’s a BMW, what’s not too like. Range is everything and it looks like BMW have tackled that challenge. The only issue is the price, ยฃ70K and upwards but it’s too be expected.

Itโ€™s certainly a good looking car and as much as BMWโ€™s have always been expensive, I suppose ยฃ70k plus for a German saloon is acceptableโ€ฆ.

Most of the up-class hotels where I work in London are running fleets of EV 7 series and they have lights around the grills and I have to admit they do look impressive.

Sharp thumbnail. I would have lighter tan interior but not a fan of two tone style. I also find it odd there is no normal silver currently. Interested to hear more on phone integration when you get more time with it. Interested how the ICE feel too with straight six

This car is spot on, but new car prices even for those with resources are just getting too high, especially with manufacturers having such high interest rates.
The i5 needs a bigger battery. Having a range over 400 miles for a sales executive is vital. 200 miles there 200 miles back. Charge at home or hotel. Then you have it.

Great review as always.Nice car ,but ยฃ75000,that’s pricey.I think most will be bought as company cars.

Looks good and in estate form will be a fantastic addition to the range, but a shame BMW gave up on the lightweight construction approach they used for the i3 which is what makes them so much better to drive than most EVโ€™s especially in i3s form. Because of that (and the average aerodynamics) you sense the real-world range will struggle.

What has massively put me off buying am EV next is the huge insurance price rises. My friend’s renewal for his Model 3 went from ยฃ700 to ยฃ5,000!! Some quotes out there for nearly ยฃ10,000.
