You can get some great cars used now, I was looking at options for a potential new job commute which would rack up 90 miles a day, with no guaranteed destination charging, so potentially 350+ miles a week, in winter on an aging battery, and cost less than £10k. It would do 20k miles a year which excludes most affordable new leases. I found not only a Skoda Enyaq, but also Tesla Model 3 & S, Hyundai Kona/Kia Niro, MG 4, 5 & ZS, Kia EV6, Jaguar i-pace, VW ID3 & ID4 all in budget and mostly great cars.

If you can plug in at home / street nr home , then just look at daily miles.
We drive 60 a day, but charge each night. Have a 260 mile battery in summer/ 210 in winter and no issues. Even driving Derbyshire to Cornwall, no issues as there are enough chargers on route.

@simonoliver9950I was, that is why I was looking for cars that have 250 WLTP range plus, assuming 30% off WLTP for real world of cars of that age, plus 10% degradation, plus 20% winter range loss, and my preferred safety buffer of 10% would leave me looking for cars of that range for a daily commute of 90 miles

25:00 I saw a Fisker Ocean in the flesh for the second time ever last month, this time in Southwark, London. Honestly I think the third party/open source PR has worked well, but can’t imagine what I’ll need with all that size unless I plan on a proper road trip

I’ve been eyeing up the Fisker now there’s a solid community for support but yeah, it’s still a lot of car that adds friction to everyday driving

Regarding what we need in a car in terms of charging/range: I’m on the California central coast, and I do make a few road trips each year, with destinations like LA or Seattle, so I bought a 2024 Ioniq 5 2.5 years ago as my first EV (we’ve had a succession of Prii including 10 years with a plug in, that we did charge every day). I wanted to be sure I wouldn’t suffer range anxiety or feel like I had to sit around waiting for it to charge. I love the Ioniq 5, but now I can admit to myself that a super long range or super quick charging time just isn’t that important. Anything that charges in half an hour and can be driven for >3 hours between charges is perfectly adequate. When my lease is up, I will definitely be looking down the range a bit for the next one.

Just taken my EX40 Twin Ultra down to Italy skiing; updated from a XC40 P8 1st adition. VERY easy. I took out Ionity and Tesla subscriptions and hence was only paying 33-35c per kWh.
Very easy. Planned stops to get the cheap price electrons but realistically every Aire had loads of options.
I happen to like mine but each to their own.
He has no chance of getting a Ex60 in 2026 and probably most of 2027 if they don’t order now.

I just got my Xpeng G6 and I think one of the things the Chinese manufacturers are getting right is that they are speccing their cars really well and having a great range of technology inside. This means they don’t have massive options list which bump up the base price of the car.

Think brand heritage is less of a draw than it used to be. Most people are more concerned with cost of ownership, levels of reliability, dealer network and the specification of the car. Many of the chinese cars tick many of those boxes.

I got an EV3 GT-LineS (so top spec) used, 25 plate and pre-tax hike. 2800 miles, and about £6k off new price. Still had 6.5 years warranty. Very nice. So yes, there are EV3s on the used market.

To be fair China has done a better job with the MG name than the UK managed. Maybe the rebirth of Freelander will be a huge hit.

I’m with you Ginny. BYD Seal all day long!! Sick of SUVs. Bought my Seal a year ago. Done 33,000 km in that time and still love it.
Mind you, if cash was not an issue, I’d be looking at the Volvo EX60 (after saying I’m sick of SUVs 😂) or BMW i3 when it arrives

I saw one in London last weekend.
They’re nice looking vehicles, and was pretty sad when Fisker failed, as they should have sold millions of them.

I love one pedal driving and use it all the time in my Polestar 2. I do actually like that it doesn’t have paddles, I don’t change the settings so I think they add unnecessary complexity, I suspect I am in the minority though.

Just loved this chat between you guys, two of the best respected journalists in the land. That chat about China, so enlightening, can I come next time please? Well done, love this double act. Can we have a lot more of this ‘state of the Chinese motor industry’ stuff. It’s today’s most important motor industry revolution.

Great to see Steve on the podcast once again, hopefully he can join again in future at random times. Glad it was almost an hour once more as it should be. The FSD at least Tesla version would fail badly I suspect in a blizzard scenario where the road is pretty much white as well same for if it was a downpour of rain really being vision only.
