FIRST LOOK: New 2023 Hyundai KONA ELECTRIC. Has Hyundai got it right? / Electrifying

Check out the review:

The Hyundai Kona is an .com favourite, generally due to the fact that its excellent driving range and efficient usage of energy make it a terrific alternative for anyone planning to go electrical for the very first time. Nevertheless, the Kona isn't without its defects, it's not the most spacious vehicle in its class and the functional style does not exactly turn heads.

However the Kona has actually been on the getting end of a full-on radiance up, or to be more accurate– and in the words of Hyundai's Design Director, SangYup Lee– a scale up. It gets a make over, a bigger cabin, a (a little) bigger battery and a host of other goodies that will help the Kona stay at the top of its video game up until Hyundai completes its IONIQ variety with smaller sized offerings.

Should the Kona be on your shortlist? Sign up with Ginny as she takes a close take a look at the new variation of Hyundai's best-seller and discovers a host of new functions. From the brand-new lorry to load function that allows you power standard family devices straight from the main traction battery to the heated front charging port, the Kona isn't brief on devices.

Would you think about one? Do you believe Hyundai has done a great job in revitalizing the Kona? As always, we enjoy to hear your views, so please leave a comment listed below.

Ooh, I love the new look of the Kona. Great vid Ginny 👍

The boot looks a lot more useful than the old one. That trick with the parcel shelf is good, but it’s not new, I’ve had it on various cars over the years

It’s a curious one. Clearly to match the Niro EV but placing it at a (probable) 38k for the long range but with “intro” level charging speeds. I love the looks and will seriously consider this from my SoulEV in 18 months time, but it’s not going to be much of an upgrade except the additional range. Still. Great looking car and clearly well designed inside and out. V2L is a winner and it’s going to do very, very well!

    Best looking Hyundai to date.
Love how it has family resemblances with other models in the range without being a cookie-cutter shape.
Hyundai Kia are doing a fantastic job with their design.

For me, the perceived quality over camera seems to be better than that of the Ioniq 5. I really wasn’t impressed with the interior quality of that when I first sat in it.

Not keen on how it looks outside, but the interior is very good. I don’t need a new car at the moment, but Depending on how it is to drive, I would seriously consider it in 2 or 3 years time.

I think it looks great inside and out. Extra nice controls on the dash! I hope it is priced well.

We had to buy our Kona Electric last year and love it — but this looks even better!

The current Kona is already such a great EV, and this one looks like it is multiple steps up.
I really hope they don’t hike up the price much, because that was also one of its strong points.

This new Kona has piqued my interest and my wife likes it too. Glad it has grown in dimensions, I thought the old model was a bit small. We’ll wait for reviews and hope it releases in New Zealand this year.

I have the current model Kona and love it. Range is brilliant and the drive is relaxing and very comfortable. Late last year I did a drive from Manchester to London on a cold day in heavy rain with everything switched on except cruise control and I didn’t suffer any range anxiety. This new one looks even better and I can’t wait for my local dealer to get a demonstrator so I can have a proper look. Can’t wait to see your upcoming road test.

Love it. If it comes to Motability then it’s certainly on my short list- my extra reasons for why it might be good for wheelchair users: charging point at the front ( so I can maximise space on driver side when parking up to let me get my chair out without then blocking a charge point on the other side of the car – which would happen with MG4); not an enormously intrusive centre console ( so I can fold my wheelchair up and get it on the passenger seat); nice boot space so when travelling with my partner she can chuck the chair in the boot. All in all looks great!

Definitely like the re-design. Really improved it. As long as the price is truly competitive, then I think it is brilliant. In general Hyundai & Kia are looking miles better than VW brands. Their design department is vastly improved..

Looks great both outside and in, great details like full center console and physical buttons! and if it comes with a built in dash cam great, never understood why this isn’t more standard in cars
. I will be taking this for a test drive when it come in. Good review !

Looks like they have addressed a lot of the issues of the previous model which I have on lease. My only criticism is the slow charge rate. They should be able to offer at least 135kW like their competition, the MG4 and ID.3

I really like the interior with all those physical buttons rather than touch screen options. Perhaps it is just the shock of the new, but it looks to me like Hyundai have borrowed the ugly stick from Kia and given this car a damned good thrashing with it 😆

I love that new Kona too, it’s more efficient and versatile than most in it‘s class. Also value vs. price seems 👍. When I get older – 72 years and 54 driving mostly European ‚premium‘ cars now – I might change from my outstanding EV6 AWD which I happily got in May 2022. I needed AWD because we live in a mountainous area and for that in smaller cars only Smart now starts to offer. After driving my first ever Asian car (well we once imported the first Honda Civic and Accord, when they where comparably good cars) 11‘000 km now, with German highway, trackdays on Anneau du Rhin and many alpine roads and short local useage with just 16,8 kWh average or about 1,9 Liter equivalent. Lowest TCO of all previous cars and maintenance was adding some water, change of wheels and software update! With most ICE after leaving the distributor we had mostly some issues. So actually Hyundai Group makes anything right but they have to end what Elon called ‚production hell‘ as demand went up above all expectations. 12 – 18 months where in the beginning of automotive industry just the norm and today people want everything in a moment. A good lesson for younger customers, plan your expenditures long time before and make your buys well informed the best moment. We do not always need the latest iPhone😂😎🇨🇭

A great review, I am impressed by the “upscale” and particularly a light interior, so fed up of all those dark/black interiors. Definitely a tempting offer I might consider upgrading from my 2020 Edition 1 Kia Soul. Don’t you think this is the sort of upgrade that is typical of electric vehicles. More features, better tech, more “nice” touches.

I’ve had my Kona E for 4 years tomorrow and I haven’t had any problems except for the charge port door freezing up occasionally in our Canadian winters….it’s the most enjoyable car i have ever owned. I can see all the upgrades to the 2023 model making it the best small EV on the road. Behind Tesla, Hyundai come a close second in EV manufacturing.😅😊

The charge port door is heated on this new Kona…..
