FIRST DRIVE: Volvo EX30: the best small electric car IN THE WORLD? | Electrifying

COMPLETE REVIEW:

Developing a big, costly electric automobile is, fairly speaking, a straightforward job. Include the bits that you want, whack on a huge price and keep the difference. Doing the same with a little automobile, making it affordable to the masses (and making enough to keep the accountants happy) is harder, much harder. Which is why we're not precisely awash with alternatives at the lower end of the marketplace.

But simply when we will give up hope of seeing a really cost effective, high quality compact electric , along comes Volvo and the exceptional EX30. Priced from simply under ₤ 34,000 (with the pledge of an even cheaper version in the pipeline), the EX30 looks set to offer the best of both worlds. Is it too great to be real? Time to find out.

From launch the EX30 variety comes with three various options: a Single Motor variation with 270bhp and a 51kWh battery; a Single Motor Extended Variety with 270bhp and a 69kWh battery and a Twin Motor Efficiency with 424bhp and a 69kWh battery.

The Twin Motor Performance version pairs the battery with an additional second e-motor to produce 424bhp, offering it a claimed 3.6 2nd 0-62 time. That's 0.1 slower than a Tesla Model Y Efficiency.

We drove both big battery models on the launch and returned performance figures of 3.8 miles per kWh for the AWD model and 3.4 miles per kWh for the single motor design. Based upon those figures, we 'd anticipate the AWD to have a real world range of around 230 miles and the single motor to return around 260 miles. It's worth keeping in mind, nevertheless, that while both large battery models feature a range-saving heat pump, the little battery design does not.

Thanks to the EX30's Android-based system, Google maps will automatically discover you a battery charger when you're running low and after that take you to it while the vehicle preconditions the battery to the right temperature level. When you get to a charger the extended-range Twin Motor can accept as much as 153kW, while the standard-range has a capability of 134kW.

Join Ginny as she drives the single motor extended range model on the roadway for the first time. Is this the compact electrical vehicle you've been awaiting? Is Volvo onto a winner with the EX30? Let us understand in the comments listed below.

Thank God, this car is designed for “enjoyable daily driving” as opposed to all other cars. 🤣

I have had both an ICE XC40 and now run a P6 Recharge XC40(EV) and still love it even though it isn’t perfect, i.e the range isn’t anywhere near what Volvo claim it will be. The EX30 is on my list for when my current lease runs out.

@Alinot sure what you’re talking about?

@Ian Roe Sit at the back of the Megane and – if you are more than 3 foot tall – tell me how you feel.

Was at an EV show this weekend, the EX30 is a nice $69k AUD in Australia. They didn’t have one yet though, nice polestars and I got to sit in a Dolphin for the first time so that was good.

I wouldn’t say the price is right, but it’s definitely heading in a better direction.

Seems to have been priced to catch the headlines about the lowest possible price but the bigger battery and higher spec option isn’t particularly compared with a lot of rivals.

The plight of a camera op who just wants coffee is the most relatable thing that’s ever been posted on this channel

It looks good, but I think I’d take the Smart #1, especially if I was buying the dual motor versions of each.

Two minutes in and I’d say the price comparisons say far more about how expensive the likes of the Corsa are than how affordable this Volvo is. Legacy OEMs would have and would be selling far more EVs if they were genuinely affordable.

Nice to see a slight drop in price compared to the competition. However, the Smart Brabus has better suspension. If you are after a budget EV then I would also look at the Citroën E-C3

As an e-C3 owner, I would second that – lovely car; no complaints after 18 months (and the HUD is a great addition to safety).

@Illuminatio  Sorry but I’m confused Citroën E-C3 owner for 18mths…?? The C3 yes but the E-C3 is not even on the road till December in Europe and Jan in UK

      benrgrogan

@Mika DaviesI assume they’re referring to the Indian e-C3 which the European model is based on (although that’s only been on sale for 6 months not 18 so maybe they mean the regular petrol version).

Some Vauxhall dealers are offering new (pre facelift though) Vauxhall Corsa Electric for less than £20k now! £13k discount. Three year old ones £12K or so. I can’t imagine a Volvo will be discounted that much any time soon.

I can virtually no one wants three year old EV’s thats why the prices are falling.

This is the 5th back to back review I’ve seen on the EV30. I like the narrative down to earth review of the EX30. Well done. As with the other 4 videos, I can’t help but get a first impression that the EV30 is a mixed bag. The design is very nice, but after that it seem polarizing and show a lot of compromises, and the reviews also seem to feel a reflection of a bit of cynicism to the critique, which feel on point. The summary is I feel the price is not appealing for what you get and thus not priced right, making me come to the conclusion the EV30 is priced to expensive for its value, for all 3 tiered offerer gsm, and misses the Mark for a luxury compact EV, despite the Volvo badge. I had high hopes, too, but at first impression the appeal is somewhat gone. It’s not the review, but rather the obvious compromises coming to light, if which the list is too big. It’s not just this review, but others are showing similar signs.

Thanks, Ginny. It’s funny how different reviewers have different opinions as most reviewers seem to think Volvo has one-pedal down, better than most carmakers. And Ginny is one of the few to mention the voice commands for Volvo’s interface. There is one misconception that some people are saying and that is because the car is made in China it’s more inexpensive. Volvo makes their flagship sedan in China, the S90, at least for the US market, and it is not inexpensive. In fact, it’s costly. Lotus will make their flagship SUV, the Eletre, in China. Polestar will make the Polestar 5 sedan in China and that will cost a ton of money. And Volvo plans to make the EX30 in Belgium in 2025 or after 2025, that was recently announced. So, making it in China probably doesn’t make it less costly to buy for consumers. The other things mentioned did help bring the price down plus it is on a shared Geely platform. But, other very expensive cars use shared platforms.

I like this interior. It reminds me of Volvo’s Scandi interiors of previous generations but there’s more attention paid to textures. That it is sustainable, or more sustainable than previous generations is laudable. Don’t like the lack of instrument display behind the steering. But overall, love the interior. Good car. A modernized BEV XC40 that’s maybe shrunken a bit too much?

This EV is one of my absolute favourites. What they have done with the design and to keep costs down is commendable. Unfortunately the amount of leg room in the back does not fulfill the needs of my long legged family so that’s sadly a dealbreaker for me. If that wasn’t the case I would very likely buy one.

Not bad… But extremely minimalist for what a Volvo used to be. Not to me, but wonderful to know. And such a wonderful video as well. Some reviewers lack the fact that those cars are to be used by real people, they focus more on such technicalities that really don’t interest, while these Electrifying videos usually would go straight to the point while being energetic and very visually appealing!… Congrats!…

One pedal driving – I believe they set it like that, because most people that aren’t use to it, gets motion sickness easily. Wife had the issue when we were test driving an electric xc40 and electric c40. Hope there are granular options for it in an OTA update.
