Read the review:

Keep In Mind the ? 2 seats, super-short, looked like a toy? Well, that's history, and now we have a totally brand-new type of Smart. A pure , ultra-modern Smart, suitable for a new age of electrified car. Say hello to the company's first purpose-built car – the # 1.

Developed as part of a joint venture between Mercedes and Chinese electrical automobile huge Geely, the # 1 (which Smart employers insist should be called 'hashtag One') will be the very first of a series of all-electric vehicles that will be sold both in China and Europe. Although Smart has actually traditionally been connected with little automobiles– the initial CityCoupe and ForTwo were famed for their incredibly compact size– the # 1 marks the start of a new period for the brand name.

The # 1 comes with a single 62kWh battery option and has a WLTP figure of between 260 and 273 miles. It releases with 150kW DC fast charging ability and air conditioning charging at an optimum of 22kW on all but the entry level Pro+ model. These specs, according to Smart, will allow the # 1 to charge from 10-80% in under thirty minutes.

All but the entry level Pro+ designs get a heatpump as standard, which assures to minimise the range loss when the thermometer dips. We 'd anticipate the # 1 to return around 250 miles of variety in warm weather condition and 220 miles in winter.

Looking forward to the Volvo EX30 vs the Smart #1. As I think the Volvo I cheaper.

      Smart#1 is cheaper, around 2k

@sceltic  I thought the Volvo was meant to start at £32k….?? Maybe I’m wrong.

@Mika Davies £33,795. Cheaper than the Smart #1 which is £35,950.

I’ll be ordering the Volvo when my salary sacrifice scheme allows.

@flyingpanhandle  Cool… Thanks. I was only going on memory, but I thought thatvthe Volvo was cheaper. No salary perks for self-employed, but I will certainly be looking at the lease deals.

Volvo EX30 has a shorter wheelbase than Smart #1. The legroom of EX30 backseat is tiny.

Won’t be a popular in Rome, too big and to loose the London Cab turning circle as well. Hope the crash test is as good as the others. Lovely enough ❤❤❤

I’m so glad car manufacturers are making cars for all the people wearing massive top hats. Definitely worth the more inefficient shape.

Inefficient in the sense of aero yes, but that does make the shape more practical

Like the interior. The outside looks like a big odd shaped losenge. And it’s too expensive. It won’t sell, but the Volvo EX30 will.

Note that the E Pedal is memorized when you created your profile and automatically selected each time you start it.

People here commenting that they would wait for Volvo EX30 need to know that these two cars have different wheelbase length. Smart #1 is much more spacious than Volvo EX30, especially at backseat.

Yep, the #1 is huge inside for its size.

Maybe the back seat space is larger, and the car taller, appearing more spacious? But the boot size is almost identical (5 litre difference) and the overall length of the car is only 4cm different. I care a lot about the boot because of dogs. P.S. Sorry, just checked, the wheelbase of Smart is 10cm longer, quite significant so probably there is quite a bit more space. Pity about the boot!

The Ex30 with the panoramic roof, if you want a sun blind it is an accessory that you have to clip in place, unlike the Smart.

@Jonty60 and the smart food doesn’t cut headroom

Oh, us Spanish speaking people know a lot about weird names. I’ve got to see with my own eyes the Mitsu Pajero “Wankxr”, the Mazda Laputa “thewhxre” and the Nissan Moco “bugger”. So I think we can take a few symbols here and there or the “wifi password style” names of the Japanese carmaker (bzrx, eny whatever…)

The “Toyota Whatever”… yes, I like it!

A Spanish friend nearly exploded when we pulled up behind a Pajero in the UK. Epic naming fail. Made for a very entertaining moment on our day out though 😀

The hashtag symbol you refer to a lot in this video is regularly used as “number” which would make this the Number 1. Love your videos

    1. Nathan Shearman Avatar
      Nathan Shearman

I thought it should have been the Number 1, but apparently Smart have insisted it’s called the hashtag one, and that reviewers call it that in videos.

    2. glasg0w Avatar
      glasg0w

@Nathan Shearman that’s what I heard too – which is funny, considering that there is no easy way to say hashtag in Chinese apparently, according to a Chinese commenter I saw on another video haha

I like it. Geely is doing a good job. The Volvo EX30, the Zeekr X and now the Smart #1
    Keep ’em coming!

Ginny’s very salty reaction to the “#1” name was great.

Megane, ID.3, Born, C4, Astra, Mokka, 308, 2008, etc, need to be priced more competitively.

Between the MG4, Smart #1, Volvo EX-30 and Tesla Model 3, the others will have a hard time selling.

I particularly like the Megane. 4’19m length, It’s also not very wide, plenty of space inside, efficient, Google Automotive…but it’s a bit overpriced.

Looks like a nice alternative to the other offerings.
There’s more than a little resemblance to the Mini Countryman & it’s none the worse for that.
Is this the EV Mini should have made?

Great review Ginny, thanks! Looking at getting the sister car EX30 in Australia next year. I wonder how similar the driving experience will be between these two super mini SUVs!

Good review of a computer on wheels. Still wouldn’t chage it for my smart fortwo eq, which does everything my wife and I want from a transport system.

Interesting car, not a fan of the #1 name, I would go so far as to say it is MR2 😉

As the owner of a FourTwo petrol, I am really disappointed that Smart didn’t redesign the FourTwo as electric with a better range than Mercedes managed withe the electric FourTwo. The original concept was a compact two seater, easy to park, easy to drive. Mercedes/ Geely have just gone for the let’s have another SUV type vehicle just like everybody else at an excessive price. What will happen when Tesla bring out their sub £25k car as the keep on promising and all the other companies will be scrabbling to catch up.

Looks like a storm trooper! I think the boot is quite small for a family car?
