Sign up with Nicola as she gets behind the wheel of the new DS No4, the French brand name's most current all-electric crossover that guarantees style, sophistication and silence in equivalent procedure. With its upgraded style, luxurious interior and premium price, the No4 is gunning directly for the likes of the Audi Q4 e-tron and Volvo EX30– however can DS truly persuade purchasers to take the plunge on something this strong (and this costly)?

Nicola takes it for a very first drive to see whether the No4's mix of high-end and technology justifies its cost, or if it's a case of style over function. From its ultra-smooth trip and avant-garde design to its surprisingly punchy performance, this could be the most intriguing EV you may not have considered … yet.

Gorgeous, brave and just a bit bonkers– is the DS No4 worth the gamble? Time to find out.

    So many red flags. Stellantis, hybrid platform, transmission tunnel. Then it looks really cramped. Haven’t got to the price yet. Just looks woeful.

      Terrible rear access and legroom seems to be a trait for STELLANTIS Europe vehicles.

      STLA = 15 brands. What has Alfa Romeo to do with RAM. FIAT with Leapmotor,? Maserati with Peugeot?
      As for rear seats, tunnels and stuff .. buy yourself a Lexus, Bimmer or Benz in this segment.

    I like the light up badges, because it means that you don’t need a chromed badge, however when they drip chrome all over the car with chromed door handles, window frames and oh yea, and an extra badge on the bonnet.

    I do like the look of it. But £40k, ouch!

    Have they launched a DS No.5, if so can we nickname it the Mambo, please 😊

    The hole in the rear seat for ‘long things’ is called a ski hatch. It does what it says on the tin. Well not exactly, I mean it’s not an incubator for baby skis but you get the reference

    Isn’t the random flat bit on the transmission tunnel where the daft second touch screen everyone hated used to be?

      Yes, on the pre-facelift that’s where the little letter finger writing thing was.

    looks like the ds4 got a facelift to the ds no4.
    In the netherlands we sometimes see them in the wild, though not that often.
    i would think if you go for an electric car you want the extra space it gives you.
    no tunnel so to say.
    but the looks are good and how the ds does his inside of the car is (i think) verry nice.
    the price: it is more premium than peugeot or opel, so the pricetag is bigger.

    nice revieuw on the car!

    I like that the flappy paddles are spreading. I sometimes forget that I have them in my Kona but then when I want to change the regen level I’m so glad they’re there

    1. @brianiswrong Avatar
      @brianiswrong

      Love the true 1 pedal driving in our 2024 kona
      I also like to use the paddles to control the regen/ speed down a long hill.

    2. @TheGoodDrEvil Avatar
      @TheGoodDrEvil

      The problem I have with the flappy paddles in Stellantis EVs (haven’t tried the ds°4 yet) is that they don’t have a smooth transition between the settings.
      This makes me not use them as much as I otherwise would.
      I’d generally use them to gradually slow down when I disengage cruise control / drive assist.
      Using the flappy paddles to then switch between modes doesn’t result in as smooth an experience as I would hope for.
      So what do I do in stead? I hit leave regen on the strongest setting and the accelerator before disengaging the CC/DA in an effort to smoothly come to a creep using the accelerator in stead.
      If there was a smoother ‘crossfade’ between the regen settings, I’d do this with the flappy paddles in stead.
      What I like about CC/DA is that I can rest my right food against the brake pedal for emergencies. Using the flappy paddles I can do that, moving my foot to the accelerator pedal to decelerate, defeats the purpose…

    3. @soapyfrog Avatar
      @soapyfrog

      @@TheGoodDrEvil I like the Tesla approach. No paddles. Just modulate acceleration and deceleration with the right pedal. So simple. CC if you need a rest.

      I think; Chris Harris, Henry Catchpole, Steve Sutcliffe, Andrew Frankel, Richard Bremner, Steve Sutcliffe and not forgetting the late great L J K Setright might be considered to be better purveyors of the art in my humble opinion. And, yes L. J. K. Setright died before either YouBook or FaceTube ever existed but, you take my point.

    FWIW: over here in the Brussels region you see quite a a lot of DS on the roads.
    The DS4 was never for me because it’s not really roomier in the back than the DS3 crossback was.
    That said, people who use the DS4 as a daily driver, who don’t need a lot of room in the backseats seem to really love it.

    It’s not an SUV so thank god for that. I think its a good looking car and I like that there is enough styling on the inside to make it interesting without resorting to the ‘bomb gone off in Ratners’ look of some DS in the past. There is only one thing I absolutely hate and that is the awful script on the hatch. If there isn’t a delete option for that, it would be a deal breaker for me.

    “That’s a nice little hole for your finger” does the editor ever cut things out in the basis of it being too much? Carry on films would blush at some of your reviews. To be clear. I’m not complaining at all, I love how much you like to stretch things.

    As an owner for 5yrs of a Citroen DS5 Hybrid, I think the identity problem DS have is not theirs. It’s reporters (not blaming Nicola BTW) and British badge snobbery. The happily ignore/ accept all the VAG cars without knocking shared components but have a real hangup over DS and Stellantis which sometimes verges on the irrational. Reporters ALWAYS reference Citroen.
    Yes DS is different and pricey, but what you get is character and style compared to the silver or grey photocopy Audis. Maybe not new but a nearly new DS will be a bargain and rare.

    It’s certainly very attractive to look at, far better than most of the ubiquitous anonymous blobs with green tags, but I just can’t see it selling in any kind of numbers in the UK, which is a shame. I’d definitely look at one, but it’ll be a few years now before my current car gets replaced.

    I have the petrol version of this very car. EV was not available when I bought it but wanted the Hybrid. Trouble is the Hybrid was over 40k which attracts the luxury car tax, as will this. Yet to see another one on the road in the UK and that’s what I like about it, people notice it and its interior really impresses. It’s a great drive, very comfortable and in terms of features and spec, you get a lot more for your money than the Merc A Class or similar luxury brands.

    Not a fan of the light up badges. I tend to think about how much more it will cost to fix/replace after an accident, it’ll be more than a regular badge, and that cost of repair has an impact on the insurance premium.
