Satisfy the Aion V: the very first UK model from GAC's Aion brand, and a family-sized electric SUV packed with tech, space and some genuinely uncommon ideas. With a starting rate of just under ₤ 36,500, it's aiming straight at rivals like the Kia EV3 and Škoda Elroq– however trying to stand apart with comfort, refinement and sheer devices levels.

Sign up with Batch as he takes a very first drive in the new Aion V. From the surprisingly exceptional interior and huge rear-seat space to the strange heated and cooled centre console box, we break down everything you need to understand about China's latest EV opposition.

With over 300 miles of declared range, quick charging, lounge-style seating modes and a cabin that feels much more pricey than the price tag suggests, the Aion V certainly makes a strong first impression. However in an EV market that's getting more crowded by the week … is that enough?

And more notably … would you pick it over more recognized options from Kia, Skoda or Volkswagen?

The armrest cooler/warmer is _very_ common in China, but the lack of a glovebox and poor screen based ergonomics are trends we can live without. Funny thing, though, now is that everybody expects great quality and pleasant interiors from Chinese cars. This confidence settled quickly.

Don’t forget the drive ability for the car. Chinese look at cars as an extension from their own houses. I rides only from A to B… We European love to drive, that’s the different. And Chinese cars are usually big! They see it as a smartphone on wheels….
We see EV as cars that getting smart!

8 is the lucky number for Chinese. That amount of years with warranty, services, road side assistance and more is a massively valuable package. Also a vote of confidence by the manufacturer. Truly impressed! The slipping front wheels/poor accelerator controls would worry me in winter, though.

I have a Kia e-Niro which is well-known for spinning its wheels, especially when wet, but that was mainly an issue with the tyres it was fitted with when new. It’s also much more smoother when it eco mode so it’s not something I would worry about.

Such a great EV! I have also a Kia e-Niro.
When it is snowing much, usually I put it in eco+
When it’s raining I prefer eco mode.
Normal to summary weather conditions, on Normal mode.
For taking of and I neet to be first through traffic lights, Sports mode. 😅

Most Front Wheel Drive EVs do the spinning. You will adapt to it and be able to control it. Recently, I drove Lynk & Co in Spain and did the spinning if you are not careful especially going uphill.

The cabin’s mini fridge/oven is the most exciting part of this car, other manufacturers should offer this. But why the hell it doesn’t have a glove box?

    1. @MigV40 Avatar
      @MigV40

Exactly, I think it looks like a great car. But, you’re not really going to store lots of stuff in the cooler and you don’t have a glovebox so where are you going to put all your stuff?

I wasn’t interested at first, don’t like the look of it but then I was sort of won over by its quality & sensible warranty etc. Interesting.

I went to the launch event of GAC in my country. This was there too. I never considered it, because of the looks. But after some online research I went to have a look at the dealership yesterday. And now it’s a serious contender.

Good EV, good review, but at least 1 year too late. If this were May 2024, I would say wow, this will take the UK market by storm. If it were May 2025, I would say, nice, nothing groundbreaking, but should do well! In 2026 – meh…
Also, there were a ton of Aion V reviews about a year ago, a bit of a shame for the Electrifying team…

It’s got something of the old nissan Xtrail going on in the front design.
    Impressed with the ride review.
Agree with interiors. They are all a bit interchangeable on them Chinese models.

If originality and creativity is a minimalist interior with just a big screen in the middle and nothing else i will go with one that still look like cars!

Great Review Batch… This looks like a premium ‘Dacia’ and of course there will be no ‘Creativity’ because it’s Chinese, because the USP of China in most fields it focuses its interest, including Car Manufacture is , Copy, Assimilate, Regurgitate at a State subsidised lower cost, and Repeat… which is why when Ginny was in China she actually commented that there were so many ‘look-a-likeis’ and of course there would be. 🙂
