So what is really occurring at Porsche? Will the combustion powered Boxster and Cayman make it through? Will the market hit the ZEV targets or will things alter?

Ninth! Got a bit distracted! Hope everyone is doing well and are having a great week so far. The ZEV mandate is clear untenable and will need to be relaxed some what. So from what I am hearing Porsche will do with the Macan in having the previous ICE version of the Boxster/Cayman remaining on sale for an undefined date. As re-engineering the in coming EV Cayman/Boxster platform to fit an engine and gearbox will clearly be very expensive to do!

The manufacturers need to sit down with the government and be very frank with them in say the current mandate is unworkable and will lead to many of the OEM’s going out of business.

By my calculations based on extrapolation of sales to date to full year, suggest for the remainder of the year BEV sales will need to be 48% of all sales in remaining 3 months of the year to hit a full year minimum share of 28%.
    Very, very unlikely.
Might have miscalculated but I think the numbers are correct.

The 28% EV target for EV’s this year is not just linked to sales. It’s already been met at 21%, because car makers can borrow or trade EV credits.
    – Borrowing credits : Manufacturers can borrow a limited percentage of their target for future use
    – Trade EV credits: If a manufacturer exceeds its target, it generates credits that can be traded with companies that have fallen short

    1. @ma40 Avatar
      @ma40

Exactly this. It’s worth adding that the manufacturers also gain credits by reducing the overall emissions of their fleet (by selling hybrids).

The big jump is the 2028-2030 targets.

Got a few friends with elec cars. All of them are great, fast spacious stylish. But too expensive and the network isn’t where it needs to be .

As you say legislation may well change with enough pressure from the industry and with the targets almost impossible to hit , it will happen.

Let’s enjoy the ICE for a good while longer !

We will always buy the car that we personally want . It is the buyer’s money and grossly unrealistic that the manufacturers are penalised. Any other product that doesn’t sell is discontinued . That is buisiness.

I’m an electric car owner, owning one is absolutely right for my current lifestyle as a business owner and I have the ability to charge at home etc. This dream the government has of pushing everybody into an electric car is absolutely ludicrous and from what I can see so far, this has the potential for some catastrophic financial repurcussions on a global scale. I really do hope they stop this madness soon and let the people make their own sensible decisions on what type of vehicle is best for them.

Enthusiasm for EV is falling rapidly so the current EV sales numbers will look optimisic in a few months. Dear Porsche: Almost NOBODY wants an electric Porsche Sports Car! That can be bought elsewhere cheaper: Like JAGUAR, they don’t seem to understand their own product or customer expectation: Porsche sports car customers want engineering, not electric motors & electronic nonesense…Porsche ICE is what attracts us! Focus on sustainable fuels. Speaking as a Cayman driver, I can tell Porsche if they go all electric on the 2-seater, they will lose most of that market.

I’m interested in what’s happening at Audi.. a brand which sells its image on sport / Quattro. The headlong rush to EV is killing the brand

I agree with Peter and would recommend listening to Harry Metcalf’s (Harry’s Garage) take on the situation. I’m my opinion the EV technology is becoming increasingly attractive and prices are coming down but the market is understandably hesitant. We cannot overlook that probably 35% of car owners do not have off street parking to charge overnight and it is difficult to see how public charging prices are going to fall even to bring them in line with the cost of running an ICE vehicle. I fear that our Govt are too net zero dogmatic to revise the ZEV Mandate but it is clear that the EU is beginning to have a rethink so it would be stupid for the UK not to align otherwise the European manufacturers will pull their ICE vehicles from the market and open the border for yet more Chinese cars – both EV and hybrid – which will be another nail in the coffin of UK manufacturing and our auto industry. Unlike the Japanese invasion in the 1980s and the Koreans in the 2000s Europe is not competing on a level playing field with the state owned or state subsidised Chinese auto industry which already has massive over capacity. Interesting that the European manufacturers are also lobbying for less nanny knows best equipment in small cars to reduce production costs. There must be many mourning the loss of the Ford Fiesta – killed by regulation that buyers did not need or want.

Harry’s take on this was spot-on IMO. State-sponsorship aside, the Chinese paradigm of setting targets based on “New Energy Vehicle” is sensible and something EU/UK/US manufacturers could copy and achieve. This would still reduce carbon emissions in the long-term without being draconian and possibly shuttering companies.

I’d imagine that 21% figure in 2025 is driven largely by business sales and super cheap lease deals. Massive depreciation is an indicator those cars are not doing well in the used market, private buyers don’t want them and probably aren’t buying new at any scale either. I wouldn’t be surprised if 25-30% is the natural ceiling for EV demand.

The mandate should have been a two phased approach – first a move to PHEVs by 2030 and then to BEVs by 2040. Not only would the intro price for the latter be lower, but the battery tech would have time to be more efficient (and hopefully cheaper), as well as a more comprehensive charging network.

Horses for courses, I don’t have a Boxster because I need an A to B mode of transportation. I have it for all the reasons anyone who has driven one will understand. I also live in a country where I can’t ever see EV working well, unless it’s a local daily commute.
