….for this one…that it hasn’t been crashed, was a Max Power project and hasn’t rusted to bits. Looking forward to this one however, my era of fast hatch….

I had a R5 Raider in 1990. It was one of the first to get an RDS stereo. But no ABS 😬It was so fast for it’s time. Now look how nuts fast cars have become 😅

A great bit of nostalgia there Pete, takes me back when I was 19 again when a few mates had R5 turbos, I had 205 Gti’s.
What a great time it was!!

Reminds me of my first car I.e. Vauxhall Nova 1.2 which was no where near as fast as your Renault (think it was about 70bhp) but similar size and weight and also manual choke which I hated although think there was a problem with mine as fine line between starving the engine and flooding the engine. The massive windows, by today’s standards, also a giveaway of an 80’s car. I would have loved something like that at the time!

Had a silver r5, then decided to have 220hp brodie brittain tune up. It was great for its time, the French were good at creating hot hatches. good memories..

Now you can see why we have gone so wrong with huge anonymous SUV’s. I drove one of these in 1987 back to back on the same day as a Peugeot 205GTI. The Renault was more exciting, but ultimately the 205GTI a better car. What we really need is more small cars, as our roads and car parks are totally over crowded.

Great video, I did smile when you said about 2 of you not going in it together, we are currently away on a mini road trip as a family of 3 and luggage in my phase 1 R5 GT Turbo 😊

    Great review. Happy memories.
So loved R5 I had in my 20’s. An R5 GTX, it was my daily driver from 1988 to 1994. Had a bigger engine (1.7 litre) but no turbo. Still a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing with a 9 sec 0-60 time and a 120mph top speed. Cosmetically it was much smarter than the regular R5 with all colour coded side panels and bumpers, the classic yellow fog lamps and lowered side skirts. Kept it till 2005 as a run-around and even now regret scrapping it. but at 175,000 miles and falling apart from rust, it had had its day.

I had a GTL and would have killed for a GTX! I preffered those to the turbo. Nice torque from that 1721cc F2N 👍🏻

We had that engine in an 11GTX, then TXE. That towed a caravan around europe five up!
(Often needed 3rd on motorway hills though)

Wow, that brought back some very, very fond memories! I was lucky enough to have one of these in period as an 18 year old (though mine was D reg). They were awesome back in the day, like big go-carts. After the 5 Turbo I moved up to an 11 Turbo, followed by a 21 Turbo Quadra and eventually, when working in France, got into a Safrane BiTurbo, which was a different kind of awesome. Happy days…

I had one in pearl white. It was an amazing little pocket rocket! I still think about it to this day. 3 wheel cornering was great!

Back in the 70s my driving instructor had a Simca rally 1 where I started my driving lessons. After just 2 lessons he changed to a Renault 5 turbo GT and I passed my test in it. He had a racing licence and used to enter the 5 in the Renault Elf racing championships. Used to watch him at Donnington Park and Castle Combe. The 5 was a great car to drive.

Great car Pete. I was lucky enough to drive the R5GT Turbo a lot back in the day when I was 18 years old. A pearl white one on a D plate. A fast car back in the day and so much fun. I remember racing another driver who was in a 911. A great race, so much so, when we were stationary at the traffic lights, the driver of the 911 shouted across “whats under the bonnet in that? I’m gonna buy the wife one, thats a fast motor!” A great fun car

As a young man, I drove two R5s (not turbo, of course). They were great cars. Cheap to get as used cars, inexpensive to maintain, reliable, comfortable even on long journeys and a great amount of space for the size of the car. I really enjoyed driving the R5. Nice to see such a car on your chanel – you rarely see them on the streets.
Later I had a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 – in my opinion the best “Hot Hatch” car of its time. I still regret selling it after 8 years of joyable use.

Thanks for bringing back some great memories. I had three first-series R5’s in the ’80’s, white, black and orange (!). In the States, they had big “Le Car” decals on the doors. After getting over that embarrassment, I had a ball driving them.

Brilliant video Pete, loving your enthusiasm for retro. Coming from the era when these were born I’m getting so many memories (tho I was a GTI driver tbh). I never did get to drive one but a colleague of mine at the time took me for a spin in his. I do remember it being quick!
