Watch this video BEFORE installing a Dash Cam !

I have tested several dash web cams on the channel over the last number of years and have actually had great deals of concerns. Are they legal? Do you decrease your insurance? How such you fit them? What does the jargon on the box indicate?

In this video I am working with VIOFO, showcasing their award winning VIOFO A329S, and responding to those concerns and more.

    The trouble with insurers is that even claims which are 100% not your fault still affect your premium even if they dont affect your NCD %. You need to report the incidents but then you still get penalised for someone running into you ! 😠

      It happened to me. it wasn’t my fault and her insurance company paid me out with no quibble. Direct line still wanted to put my premium up, same with the second years premium because I was involved. What a load of rubbish. Any excuse to fleece us.

    Hi Pete, our ID Buzz has a usb socket in the rear view mirror housing by the screen. Just get a real short cable and the install is done. Don’t know why more manufacturers don’t do this as a lot of people want a camera these days! Love a neat install.

    If you have a auto dimming rear view mirror. There is a company called Dongar that makes a power take off from that for dash cams. So no cables running to a front camera other than a very short one. Well worth the cost.

      Audi used to to do this as well, but I don’t see it on their latest configurator. But it was a dealer fit not a factory fit.

    Hello Peter! I first had a dashcam in 2015 and filmed a crash plus running away driver on the second day when I didn’t really understand how to download etc…I gave the SD card to the Police who kept it for six months but the driver was convicted!

    Installing…I bought a previous camera that you featured and it is very good but there are observations. Hard wire is certainly the best but watch out for invalidating your car warranty doing so. My LR PHEV is complex electrically and hard wire can cause battery drainage problems. After advice, I didn’t hard wire nor could I used the rear camera as running the cable from a tailgate into the roof lining needs care to avoid it being vulnerable during use and I also found the cables too short to run from the rear to the front camera whilst burying them around the door surround rubbers. My next problem was that the camera would not recognise my WiFi from my Apple phone or iPad. In the end I have a fully optioned camera that only shows the front view and connects to a 12v socket mounted under the drivers seat.

    Conclusion…only have a fully optioned camera if you can get it dealer fitted….modern electrics, vehicle warranty and the need to customise the wiring make them difficult to self fit correctly. If you do, this camera looks excellent!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

      I have a Hybrid and I don’t really want to hard wire it in because of this. I also believe it drained my battery while plugged into the usb while I was on holiday. The car broke down because of the 12v battery while driving home after my holiday. I unplug it now.

    3. @carolr9301 Avatar
      @carolr9301

      It was a nightmare to get it recovered as they couldn’t get the car onto the transporter, he had to drag it on via those chucks. It had no power whatsoever. Once the patrol man charged the 12v battery, I was away. That’s the downside of a hybrid.

    4. @HQBProductions Avatar
      @HQBProductions

      Peter and Carol…Have a look at my friend Simon’s technical video about dashcam consumption and how it can drain your battery fairly quickly in certain situations. You need to configure the camera very carefully to avoid a constant drain and yes, that will kill any PHEV. I hope this is of interest.🤔🤔😀Richard

      If you’re fitting yourself and want to hardwire it the way to do it is to put the negative wire to a bolt in the dashboard that touches the body normally the outer one holding the dash in anyway, then you need to decide are you live by the ignition or on all the time a multi meter comes in handy here, so that means finding a fuse that is suitable (I recommend you search for your car and cctv fitting and someone on a forum will show you exactly which fuse is best) this also normally means using a piggyback fuse holder so have one ready and also make sure you don’t set any airbags off undoing the trims, sometimes disconnecting the battery for 30 mins is the best option but newer cars may be different as you have to watch out for losing coding if you disconnect the battery/s, also if you have disconnected it you may find your dash lights up with warning lights when you reconnect especially VAG cars, this should all sort itself out by driving the car and turning the wheel, copy this as I clean my YT account regularly so it might not be here more than a few days, hth

    I’ve had a forward facing dash cam for as long as I can remember, during that time I’ve had two non fault minor incidents that were clearly caught on camera, I submitted the video to my insurance on both occasions and as it was so obvious I wasn’t at fault I didn’t need to pay my insurance excess of £800.
    I personally wouldn’t be without one, I also showed one video to the police as the car that hit me was discovered to be on sorn, they were not really interested but having the video evidence made short work of my insurance claim and my renewal premium didn’t seem to be affected.

    I have a Nextbase dash cam and have it powered by the “cigarette lighter” socket in the storage cubby under the central armrest. For the most part, I’ve managed to tuck the cables in the headlining going around the windscreen and around over my drivers side door. I’ve then managed to have it come around behind my seat onto the cubby under the arm rest. The excess cable length, I tucked into the pocket in the drivers seat. The rear facing camera cables are all tucked into my headlining apart from the last couple of inches and is visible in the mirror, but it isn’t obstructing my view or irritating while I’m driving. It came in very handy during an accident a couple of years ago.

    How weird – firstly an excellent video as ever.
    Oddly before looking at the video I was reporting two incidents from the weekend to the Police all filmed on my dashcam – can’t say more obviously (for now anyway) but the timing of your video was perfect. I’ve a BlackVue 590X front and rear system which is superb; went to the launch of the EV5 a couple of weeks back and note dashcam can be fitted as an option.
    Keep up the superb work

    Porsche offer on the configurator the option for front and rear dashcam wiring and front and rear cameras for £400. For some reason the camera come loose in boxes in the car and need to be fitted by the dealership. Just had them on my new Macan.

    Just a dashcam-related story for you, Peter……had an official BMW dashcam (Advanced Eye) in my 5 Series. A year or later, we agreed a trade-in price for switching to a new car, including the swap of the dashcam into the new car. Trouble is, in trying to extract the dashcam from the old car, they cracked the screen! I later learned that this wiped out a third of the profit margin on that car. So…nothing too exciting…but a wry smile that BMW didn’t make as much money out of me than they expected , due to their own fault. Well, it made *me* smile….

    thats another reason why i like the Tesla. so many cameras all around the car and sentry mode is excellent. it alerts the owner if someone touches the car or tries to open the door. not sure why many other new cars don’t have like that.
