Hi Pete. Don’t know if you’ve already watched it, but last weekend’s Italian MotoGP race was an absolute “watch from behind the sofa” job for the first part of the race.

In my opinion the 911 Porsche was at fault. There is kind of an unwritten rule in multi class racing that the slower car stays on it’s racing line making overtaking more predictable for the fast approaching car behind. Further more, it’s on the faster car trying to pass to do it safely. Clearly this wasn’t done and it resulted in a spectacular crash for the Aston. 100 seconds seems a bit harsh but in a 24 hour race maybe not. In my opinion deciding to ignore the penalty and not come in they were lucky not to be disqualified completely.

Having watched the accident and the replays over and over I do believe a penalty was warranted. I disagree with the length of time it takes the stewards to make the decision as it takes away a lot of options for the team and I think the length of the penalty was too long but you do also have to take into account that the accident did take a team completely out of the race (and I know consequences shouldn’t matter for all the commentors, but imagine how the aston team felt),

I watched the race and the accident and I have to say whilst it was a racing incident the fault lies with Kevin Estre in the Manthey 911. It’s his responsibility to pass the car in front safely. He ended the Aston Martin’s race and it was lucky that the driver was unhurt. The penalty was warranted. I also have to say that you could argue that the Porsche had a very favourable BOP advantage. One of the lighter cars and able to carry more fuel allowing for longer stints which benefitted them massively and allowed them to lead every lap.

Like others, I concur that both the application of the rules, and the penalty given for the action (not the consequences), was correct. This is not F1 rules regarding the blue flag, here it is advisory, NOT an instruction, and the onus is on the faster car to safety make it’s way through. Yes, it was a minor misjudgement but on tight races, this can be the difference between coming first and the other positions. The same as at any kart meeting up and down the country every weekend.
