The Ultimate Back to Back Track Test – Michelin Pilot Sport 4S vs Pilot Sport Cup 2

Just how various are the Michelin Pilot Sport Four and the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2? I went to Donington Park with the Michelin 911 to find out. I drove PS4S in the morning and Cup2 in the afternoon. The result were remarkable!

    The Cup 2s I found got very hot / greasy on the track, regardless of multiple pressure reductions. At least in my spyder rs.

    It was admittedly a warm day.

    When my cup 2s wore out, I replaced them with 4S (which so many people do) and I am very impressed with the 4S. Maybe if I drove them back to back on track, like you did, I’d see more difference, but for road twisties, the 4S are amazing and epic in the rain.

    Interesting video. Would love to know when Michelin are replacing the 4S? The S5 is now out on OE only but nothing for over 2 years about aftermarket! The 4S are great but getting quite old now. Hope Michelin get the S5 aftermarket launched soon. It’s taken too long already.

    Saving my pence to replace my P-Zeros with 4S N0 on my BGTS. Had Pilot Z on my old car and the grip was phenomenal.

    Pete great video. I appreciate you showing me the difference between Cup 2 and 4S. I used cup 2 on the spyder from factory and NEVER AGAIN ! They lasted 16k miles. The 4S are far better for general use and more comfortable IMO. Safe travels. Mike

    Got my first set of 4S on my Skoda vRS a few weeks ago and I absolutely love them. Great recommendation from you and Joe Ped! More grip than the Potenzas I had on before which were also good tyres. P-Zeros, No.

    Great video. I have a gt3 991.2. I recently changed the cup 2s for PS4s. I noticed the difference right away. The front end is not as pointy. I live in Scotland and the weather here is not great for cup 2s and I intend to use the car thru the winter on decent days. Probably get the cup 2s back on for a European road trip where the weather is far nicer. Either way both tyres are great but for spirited road driving PS4s for me.

    I have Pilot Sport 4s on my RS3, and the ride is good, and the handling is great!! The tires seem to be wearing really well so far after 7k plus miles of spirited driving!😅

    you could see how much grip you were gaining on the cup 2 with that gts in front lap on lap. personally i wasnt a fan of ps4 as a standard fit tyre on my kia proceed SB, had bad cupping and inner edge tyre wear, but switched to avon zv7 all round and found my new goto tyre.

    I’ve run two sets of Cup 2s on my 1M, and one set of PS4S — all BMW star-spec, of course.

    Now, the Cup 2 is a fascinating bit of kit. On the road, it’s surprisingly civil — quiet, compliant, and comfortable. But get some temperature into them and they transform completely. You can *feel* the tread blocks dig in, and suddenly you’ve got genuine semi slick-level grip.

    But there’s a caveat. In the cold or the wet, they’re rubbish. You’ll find yourself under-steering through roundabouts like you’ve suddenly forgotten how to drive.

    A proper semi-slick will give you a chunk more turn-in feel and confidence, but it’ll also make every drive to the shops or a nice b-road a test of *your own* endurance. The Cup 2s, though, occupy that sweet spot between civility and savagery. They make sense on a fast road car that actually gets driven.

    The PS4S? Think of them as 90% of a Cup 2 on the street— and about 80% of a Cup 2 on track. They don’t have the same grip or immediacy, but they’re wonderfully predictable, and they’ll keep you out of a hedge when it’s ten degrees and raining.

    So yes — Cup 2s for summer. PS4S for winter. And if you really love driving, you’ll enjoy both for exactly what they are.

    I use Dunlop sport max race 2 on my gen 2 991 gt3 but they were done after 1st day at spa so changed to cup 2’s locally & hated them on day 2. I drove back to UK then switched back to the Dunlop’s. I run cup 2’s on my f80cs throughout the summer months then switch the rear cups to ps4s, not really recommended by anyone to run a non matched set but works for me in UK esp on greasy roads. The conclusion that I came up with, was that on a 911 there’s not really enough weight over the front end to make good use out cup 2’s as they warm up slowly then drop off on we too hot. However, on something like an R35 again with the engine up front they work well.

    Running Cup 2 now on my Gtr R35 285/345 setup for road use and an amazing tyre prefer them over the PS4s I previously had. Also using PS4s on my daily Bmw M3 F80 and they continue to provide lots of grip and last set was good for 30k motorway miles.
