New Kia Sportage – Have Kia made their best selling car even better ?!

I have actually constantly been a fan of the Kia Sportage and it is their best selling automobile. This week I drove the brand-new facelift Sportage so have they made it even much better? It is readily available in Petrol and Hybrid form with a PHEV coming quickly.

One of the best Family SUVs on sale particularly In GT Line Trim 😊

Son has an XCEED. Really likes it but he’s thinking ahead – wants to grow his family and will need more space one day. I’d been looking at the current Sportage for him but wasn’t a fan of the front design. I think this one looks a little neater and more unified. The challenge will be whether we can get a decent spec for under the silly £40k ‘luxury’ Road Tax barrier if he likes it.

We had one about twenty years ago a petrol AWD big mistake as it did 5 miles to the litre so we got shot of it quick smart but we have always thought we might dip our toes in again but not over £40k for the obvious reason.

The ‘Expensive car supplement’ £40k threshold desperately needs increasing. When it was introduced in 2017 my new BMW 520d Touring was just £39.9k.
Fast forward to 2025/2026 and you have mid spec Kia’s and Skoda’s costing more than £40k. Not too far away, most cars will be over £40k.

Looking at the Bank of England inflation calculator – £40k in 2017, is now the same as £54k in 2025…and we know in the last 5 years, car prices have increased above inflation.

Should be above £69,999. That takes all “family” cars out of the equation.

The government don’t care. They are apparently only considering raising the threshold for EVs.

@@rohanw1989It’s all cars, hybrid, plug in hybrid, petrol, diesel and EV. The power train makes no difference, because it’s RRP they measure.

It’s a money grab, nothing more. It’s the same thing as the threshold at which you pay additional income tax on earnings. Wages go up because of inflation. More people end up paying higher 40% tax because the government haven’t changed the amount you have to earn before you pay 40% tax. Stealth taxing money grabs.

Does it have a button to tell KIA drivers to put their Flippin lights on when it’s raining…? Next time you’re out and it’s chucking it down with rain on a motorway… take a note of all the drivers with no rear lights on…

    1. @maff257 Avatar
      @maff257

That’s because unlike a lot of cars the auto lights aren’t linked to the windscreen wipers on KIAs, one thing I find annoying on mine.

As an avid KIA owner over the years, (3 Sportage’s, 2 Niro’s and now an EV3).I totally agree that the manufacturers need to re-evaluate the price point of their cars. And more importantly, the government needs to understand that a normal family car these days are costing us more and that £40k is not now a prestige car.

The increased rate of ‘car tax’ is based on list price not the negotiated discount price. To go for metallic paint, I like the bright blue, you would have to pay 37k to be even.

I think Kia do so much right with their cars and applaud them for the physical buttons and the improvements in the interior. Personally not a big fan of weird shaped steering wheels but that’s just me being old fashioned. Also not a fan of the new front end and much preferred the styling of the outgoing model. As for the stealth tax don’t get me started on that and yes it’s something that would put me off. What I find most frustrating is that just by adding metallic paint it goes into the higher band. It really should be on how green the car is imo and not how much money you have to throw at it. Does my nut in 🤯

No deals, it’s the list price so if you exceed the limit on list but get a discount you’ll still pay luxury car tax.

Ours, in the U.S., are a bit longer. There’s a window behind the C pillar. They’re nice, but drivers complain about the lack of power, gas only delivers 187 HP. But the hybrid (now available) has 232 HP, which may be just OK for this car. Its going to be 268 HP for the plug-in.

Thank you so much for this review, I’m waiting for delivery of my Magma Red HEV in the coming weeks and your open and honest review is excellent and to finally see it in real life and not just in a brochure is so beneficial. The HEV with 235Bhp should be an exciting upgrade from the petrol variant demonstrated, I’ll let you know!

Another good review Peter. I’m a very happy Niro owner, the Sportage being a bit too big (and expensive) for me. I agree that the 40k band needs reviewing since more and more (what could be called) ‘ordinary’ (as against ‘luxury’) cars are falling into that bracket. KIA are a great company though, and it will take some persuading to move me from that brand when it’s time to change.

Hello Peter! Kia…maybe one of the best volume makes on sale now. This is a nice car in a multitude of ways and owners will be very happy. However…would you swap the Macan for one??? Sensible people will buy the Kia but £40,000+ is a tad adventurous. Drivers…and maybe status victims, will still stay with Porsche or similar……I gave just configured a new Macan EV and with the features I use most, it still lands at £88,432….so the Kia is attractive even in PHEV firm no doubt! Stay safe! R😃😃😃🤔🤔😃😃😃😃😃

Nice package for a family car. Don’t know if the BMW X2 is a good comparison but I like this a lot more and in this top trim the Kia might be cheaper. And way more practical.
