Is the Alpine A110 R70 the Best Lightweight Sports Car?

I am a huge fan of the Alpine A110 and in 2015 the A110S remained in my leading 3 finest automobile i drove throughout the year. I have actually lastly got my hands on the A110R. It runs out power but had actually been on a diet. Can it validate its prce tag of over ₤ 100,000?

They did such a good job in reducing the weight they needed to add aero to… increase the weight.

I enjoyed the A110S with lovely buckets for a few 1000km in Spain. However its farting Turbo engine and the lack of boot space were a big minus. Moreover its infotainment is really yesterday.
    Porsche GT4 is the answer!

Nice test but I think I’d stick with the boggo model, as it’s a more rounded package. Besides, racing harness on a road car is a bit of a naff look, IMO.

Had harnesses on my R26R, a total faff. My base model A110 is not a faff at all. Both have been amazing cars to drive – thanks Renault.

Seems a tad impractical for everyday motoring Pete. Track days …Perfect! 😀

On a perfect day on perfect roads, on your way to a trackday, the A110R would be the perfect choice.
On a winter’s day in the UK, the standard car would be better. It doesn’t have the same traction issues because the suspension is better setup for our roads.

I have a 2nd car with race harness and no central rear butte mirrors, and it just isn’t the right choice for the road.

You’d have had more fun in the base A110.

Welcome up north Ped I live in Doncaster & live near the peaks. If you parked up at the summit of the snake pass there’s a nice walk to a B29 bomber that crashed in 1948. That view you had going over the top with the sunlight shining on that city is Manchester.

If I was in the market for something like this, the one thing that would put me off the Alpine (which is such a good looking thing) is the lack of a proper manual

Would love to take an A110 R70 for a spirited drive but can’t imagine the anxiety of driving on carbon wheels. Potholes in my area will swallow a Vespa whole and the thought of replacing one of those wheels would force me to leave it in the garage. Still, look forward to driving a base or S down some B-roads one day.

Great video, and hopefully a really enjoyable run in the Alpine. I was on the A34 last week in similar weather, and TBH was grateful to be in a LR Discovery! It was foul!
I admire Alpine for this car. But I think anyone who buys it will always regret not buying a Porsche for that money. At £106k you’d likely spend a lot of time justifying the cost I suspect.

I bought a GT last year and it’s a truly great car and probably the best compromise in the Alpine lineup for the road.
I like the fact most people have no idea what the car is and I’d add, space wise, it’s fine.
The R is a brilliant package but it’s not a winter vehicle. If you buy one, take the carbon wheels off, put them in the garage and buy some replacements from David Pook.
    Cup holders… who needs them?
I’d rather have the short gearing in the Alpine over the crazy long ratios in modern Porsche products. I think there’s a bit of a desire to shout out for manuals to be seen as a ‘real driver’ but in all honesty, nobody buys them.
I’ve have had a range of 1970s and later 911s. The modern 911 isn’t what it was, hence the change.

Absolutely love it 🏁👍🏁 great video. It’s my favorite dream car unfortunately not for sale in US .
If I have opportunity to make choice between Cayman and ALPINE A110 definitely choosing ALPINE. Truly beautiful car with lots of character and yes definitely track toy 🏁🏁🏁🏁

You did a lovely job of cleaning that car, but not keen on the black roof lining which makes the interior too dark.
