Is an EV ONLY future right ? – Could Dakar give us hope ? | 4K

I'm not convinced our automobile future needs to be all and I think gives us hope. Last week Audi secured their very first win with Carlos Sainz Snr standing on the top action of the podium for the very first time. The ground breaking Audi RS Q e-tron Dakar and truck has a special powertrain and it got me believing. Can we take advancements like that into road automobile and other transportation usage cases to assist with the drivetrain mix of the future?

The biggest thing that came from motorsport is Tyre Technology.

New Honda CRV FC PHEV just about to launch is going to make a lot of people have a rethink! Extreme H is going to be another interesting development . 👍

PHEVs are the worst compromise. Battery & engine are far too small meaning that, for all but the shortest distances, once the battery’s out of juice the petrol engine has to drag around the extra weight of the dead battery killing MPG.

What as opposed to a EV with a large battery having to drag the weight of the battery when that gets depleted. Phev is best of both worlds at the moment. 90 % of my driving is EV so phev works well for me. No compromises on long distance trips.

Very interesting to see where the future will take us. We’ll have to wait and see….. Please keep the mix of cars coming at all price points and drive trains. It’s what makes the channel so unique.

I am definitely a petrol head in the sense I love anything with wheels. I like bikes, mountain bikes, cars, trucks etc etc. I do see there is a place for EV cars. I have also driven a few but at the moment they don’t suit my life style or my budget and I just don’t like them, I don’t feel they give a similar enough driving experience to make me enjoy it.

I appreciate the balance of content you put up on YouTube whether PHEV or BEV or ICE. As you know I am a Petrol Head like yourself and run both an EV and Petrol manual ICE cars. I recently commented on another channel about my i-Pace and the abuse I got was unbelievable. I had about so much hate and I shouldn’t be spending my money on that car was one of the tamer comments. It made me question if I would comment again or watch that particular channel. I think the clientele here are slightly more mature and should have more balanced views.

Love the balance of your channel, but agree that with the cost of living + the price of all new cars tracking upwards, some more affordable options & looking at the used market too would be a good direction for the channel.

Personally I think BEV is the future for personal transport (with quite some evolution in both the technology and infrastructure). Hydrogen is a potential, but it needs a lot of work as it’s no where near cost or energy efficient to produce or even store as yet.

And no, none of what I’ve said means i think anyone should be forced to give up their ICE cars, especially yet. BEVs and PHEVs don’t yet meet everyone’s journey profiles. They do for me, which is why I’m making the transition. I’m not a ‘Petrol head’, i like cars – but for me they’re a tool first.

Totally agree… as a motorcyclist and petrolhead I believe in propulsion vehicles. Currently my wife runs around in an EV and its benefits are £20/mth running costs. I use a diesel for the very long journeys that I make for work. Then in leasure I ride my motorbike, as I have done for 40 years. They all have a place in society.

I agree with you. For the next decade (or so), the automotive world will be a mix of ICE, hybrid, and BEV options. And, I want your opinions about all of them. In spite of being in the western US, I find your reviews and comments to be pertinent and useful. Keep doing what you are doing and continue to look at the entire spectrum.

Another thought provoking great video. It’s interesting to see Ford, GM and others in US cutting back on their EV production lines so it’s clear other alternatives must and should be offered.

That’s why you’re one of the best car channels! I’m a petrol head through and through, but something like the Ionic 5N really excited me for the future of performance EV’s! It will be interesting to see how performance orientated brands embrace tech to still give us the feels 🙂

You are level headed and open minded tbf. Space for a mix, at least for now. As you say, will be hard in the future and from now to review exciting and different new cars. Keep pulling rhose crazy restomods and the other special trips you do out the hat.

Thought along same lines watching the late brake show “barn finds”, can you imagine unveiling a 20 year old nissan leaf and pressing ctrl+alt-del on a laptop. Not quite as emotive

It was an EV review that first brought me to this channel. That said, I currently drive petrol cars because EVs have been lagging in Australia along with the infrastructure. I live in a rural location and distance has been an issue that has only recently been getting addressed with EVs. I have always felt hydrogen is a better solution here but the technology in efficiently and effectively handling and storing hydrogen is a long way off in practicality and EV is an easier solution to our greenhouse woes than the requirements of a hydrogen future. Please keep covering all aspects of vehicle development as it is an important discussion to have across it’s full breadth. We have to go green, that is the simple truth of our responsibility for our children and their children. We should be mature enough as a civil society to be able to explore what that looks like in all its forms.

Great one Pete, love the idea of looking at all options, as I think it will eventually pan out. One area of concern are the reports about how expensive EV insurance costs are. Might be something to review

A couple of small points, 8000 pounds is 3.62 tonnes, not around five. It is easily forgotten that the upcoming restrictions is on the sale of cars that have unwanted emissions. The type of motor used is not specified, only that it does not produce those unwanted emissions. It is up to the motor industry to produce the goods. So far only EVs and Hydrogen come close, it is up to Industry to find alternatives.

    Hi Ped
I am with you on so many points that you have mentioned, and pleased on your plans going forward. What I think is such a tragedy, how we got into such an economic mess in the forlorn rush to Net Zero. The U.K. contributes 1% of global emissions, but as a country we are destroying our manufacturing capability and our energy policy is a total failure. As you stated we have a wealth of engineering talent, especially in the motor sport sector. The government missed a golden opportunity to enter into a sensible dialogue with the motor industry to achieve an acceptable way forward acceptable to all parties, which I think would have resulted in alternative propulsion systems at acceptable cost. I also believe that ICE still have room for further development of clean tec. Oh what do I know the future looks rather bleak unless there is a drastic change of direction in the very very near future.😥😥

An all EV future is inevitable, but the roadmap to get there will include a mix of propulsions. The technology that will evolve at a faster pace, driven by Chinese investments, is all electric (a good part of the human race right there).
