FIRST DRIVE – Renault 4 – As BRILLIANT as the R5 just BIGGER ?

I am a huge fan of the R5. Possibly the best EV on sale today. I took a trip to Portugal to drive it's brand-new Big Bro … the all new E-Tech. Can Renault restore another Icon?

Renault really has it going on right! This would be a perfect urban car, I like it…but I’d prefer the Alpine!

I’ve had my R5 for two weeks now and I love it, it’s a fantastic car. Renault are smashing it out of the park at the moment.

Yeah. I’d love to go back in November as that’s when they have the big waves 🌊

Great review, as always Pete. Nice car that I expect will sell like hot cakes. I think we’ll stick with our 5 though as we don’t really need the extra practicality.

I had forgotten about the Renault 4 but as soon as I saw it I remembered it and the new one has that quirky French styling. I think I like it.

Good review of what looks like a terrific little car it says something when all the good looking cars are copies old designs. One thing I think you could’ve mentioned there was the stance, the Renault 4 had a low front end a high rear end , and this seems to be the same Which helps the overall retro feel

I don’t believe the folding down front seat is available in UK cars, unfortunately. Let’s hope Renault UK change their minds on this, as it’s such a cool practical feature!

Yeah we found that out after I had shot the video. Kept it in as it’s cool 😎 😂

That’s a shame. My 53plate DY Mazda 2 has a folddown front seat, amazing how useful it is carrying ladders, flat pack etc.

Great review Pete, the R5 and the R4 are the only EVs that have ever perked my interest, saw a white R5 with a red roof today in Arundel looked great. I actually think the rear lights on the R4 look very Mini like.

Very comprehensive and professional review as usual. I would love one, will look at used prices in a couple of years. Shame they didn’t squeeze in the Megane’s 60kWh battery, but 200 miles would probably be enough for me. Always been a Renault fan, had 4 of the original 5’s but never a 4, so we’ll have to see!

Agree. And also it’s electric motor @ 218 hp or at least the other Renault electric motor of 180 hp

I wasn’t sold on the retro styling of the R4 when I first saw it, after all the original R4 was hardly a design icon, so I thought Renault were trying to stretch the reinvention theme a little too far. But you know what I think that they have actually achieved a pretty successful result. I think what is clever is the adoption of pastel shades which are quite unusual on modern cars. I have huge admiration for what Renault are achieving. Not only is the styling of their current range so superb but they complement this with wonderful design touches which demonstrate the love that the designers had when they got going. It gives the impression that they were not going to give up and pat themselves on the back when they had created the shape but wanted to make the final car a real object of desire. I can only think the Accountants were locked up well away from the design studio. Renault are being so clever and wise by recognising that it is going to be really difficult for the European car manufacturers to compete with the Chinese – and perhaps also the Koreans – on price so are making cars that appeal to us on an emotional level, albeit ones that are well built and well engineered. I also like the fact that the new Renaults have almost entirely French or European content, including very shortly the batteries. I know that the MG 5S may be a more rational choice but as a “petrolhead” I want a bit more fun in my life and a car that will bring me a smile. Unfortunately I think too many are dismissive of Renault’s because of a poor perception for build quality and reliability but their new products are miles/kilometres better than most of their Stellantis competitors.

    First of all, Great review!
In the 70’s my parents drove a several R4s which we went on holidaytrips from the Netherlands to the south of France and even to Spain. Now as a 50 year grown up this Renault 4 remembers me to that time. I love it and I’m gonna buy it!!

I wasn’t expecting the R4 to be bigger than the R5. Was hoping it would be a more basic car at a lower price point. That said, I do like what they’ve done.

The best Renault 4 review to date. Like the original it will have its own segment of the market. Personally the R5 looks better and would be my choice. Renault are hitting all the other manufacturers right out of the ball park can’t wait to see what else they have up their sleeve.

I love this design. I’m from Portugal and I know that road well. I’m also a vet and in Portugal the Renault 4L (Quatro L) was a typical choice for farm vets in the 70s and 80s.
