FIRST DRIVE – Kia EV4 GT – So Close To Being Brilliant !

I need to have driven this cars and truck in the sunny South of France but rather sat for 7.5 hours on an airplane at Heathrow. Thankfully Kia managed to get me one of the very first automobiles in the UK so I might still drive it and let you understand my ideas. This car should be right up my street … however is it?!

Biggest problem with this is that it’s the same price as a Kia EV6 dual motor which has more power and a rwd bias.

I think it needs a bit more power to get to sub 5s 0-100.

I know it’s an EV but I quite like it. The lime green accents are quite cool. The noise with the paddles I like.

    0.30 ‘stuck on an aeroplane’.
I felt so much for you. 😥.
A plane is such a small room with so many people in it.
You were pumped up due to your schedule.
It all fell apart (with also quite a bit of rain I believe while riding this Kia Sorento mild hybrid diesel SUV).
Thank you for continuing making content. 😇🙏🏻🦄🪷💐❤️

This new EV4 GT is really nice, I loved the look of the EV6 GT when that came out too. I agree with you on the GT badge Ped. They should have made it lime green like the interior touches.

They’re definitely leaning into the GT part, it seems. I would say 288bhp was ample in a hot hatch, but did I hear you say it weighed 2006kg?!…

Man, I remember paying just over £40k for a brand new F11 (LCI) 530d M-Sport Touring with a few options back in the day. I mean, obviously that was around 13 years ago now. But still. £10k more for a Kia hatchback just feels mental. That said, I just configured what would roughly equate to that car today (I guess a 530e would be today’s equivalent of the 530d), and it comes in at over £67k. Granted, I did negotiate a £12k discount back in 2013, but even with that, it’s still a £55k car, not £40k.

Even worse, I have just run the BoE inflation calculator, and the £40k in 2013 is £58k in todays money. So I guess it’s ok then? I’m just so old that I remember cars “feeling” cheaper and not realising that actually they are roughly the same “equivalent value” today. That said, I just specced up an i5 in the spec I would want it, and it’s £90k. So that’s a lot.

Gear shift might be like ‘auto parking’: You just use it once and never again. Might give some fun when you’re up for it. I really don’t know. Great video, as ever! Cheers.

enjoying the waffling, expresses the unsureness you have about it….thinking out loud, its a very on the fence kind of car, is it a bit much for a conservative buyer but too little for an enthusiast…

This is tasteful. Like a Golf GTI. Not over styled like a Honda Civic Type R.
Especially important with the very angular Kia design language which is already a little distinctive.
    Or maybe I’m just old…

It’s hip to be square with a hint of jag i-pace design in there but I feel too many screens would distract and be potentially dangerous when driving. Best Clive

It needs another 100hp, and proper aggressive simulated gears. It should have gone full hot hatch, no apologies.
The Ioniq 5n and 6n are supercar performance so there was loads of room to make this a proper hot hatch. Instead they went warm hatch. Missed opportunity unfortunately.
Kudos to Kia/Hyundai for making the effort to provide interesting driver’s cars though. Life is too short to live like the nerds that drive at 80kph on the motorway with the heating off, whilst freezing, just to get better range!

Great review as always. Somehow Kia fake engine sounds are coming over more real than the Hyundai ones do. So in that respect well done Kia.

Another good review. Just want a non-GT version of the AWD EV4, without the fake gearbox and big wheels. Just like the EV6 AWD, in fact, which also happens to be faster and not cost much more than the EV4 GT.
