FIRST DRIVE – Kia EV3 GT – More Power and Fake Gears BUT Is That Enough ?

I flew to South Korea for the Global First Drive of the Kia EV3 GT. The EV3 is Kia's finest selling EV and now it can be found in GT kind with more power, Virtual Gearshift and Virtual Sound Generator. This should give more motorist engagement but have Kia gone far enough with the styling to make this car stand apart?

I don’t know why they don’t drop the GT from the not GT GT-line cars, it just seems weird to even have GT in the name of a non GT car. Still like the car though.

Looks good fun Pete thanks. I like the sounds but still a bit off switching from ICE to EV.

I don’t think I’ve seen a small sunroof for a while- would have expected pan roof!

I’ll be honest – i was transfixed on the four water bottles at points in that- lots of storage !

Looking forward to the EV4 video.

It’s likely the EV3 will be my first full EV, I do like the car. You’re right though, Kia have just fallen short a bit with this one. I like all the yellow accents, definitely my kind of thing, much improved interior for sure. Good review, well done chap. 👍

It’s an interesting car and it nice to see Kia’s giving people choice to have a road car with added performance.

Interesting car. Reference the traffic light info. I believe some Audis can do that in Germany.

Great review as always PP. That traffic light countdown feature is great. Maybe that’s something that will be introduced in other countries in the future, although I expect if local councils in the UK need to implement this then it will never happen here.

I saw something similar in Vienna … many years ago (on the traffic light, not on the gps.) Let’s count our blessings as in the uk we have an amber phase before the green… I miss it every time we go abroad.

Hi Mr Ped. Normally I’m in line with you, but not this time. I love that there’s a subtle performance variant out there. We are not all shouty folk or looking for back jarring suspension with our extra portion of performance. I just hope the British tuned suspension retains an element of compliance otherwise it will become a very confused thing.

Hyundai N for the real enthusiast and Kia GT for the family needing to take gran and grandpa to the seaside for a couple of days. That’s the seaside in the south of France, obviously!

Personally, I`d take the extra power and leave the fake gears and the fake engine sound just where it is – on the internal hard drive.
I was such a “petrol head”, really loving the feeling of shifting through a manual gearbox.
But with the electric drive train, it felt immediately outdated. We both drive all electric since 16 months, only once we had a ICE car with a manual gearbox again, on vacation on the island of Madeira.
GOD, how i missed the massive electric brake power on the steep downhills! This ICE/gearbox stuff is definitely for the museum now.
Anyway, for those of you who miss it? Here you go. I once saw a video with a german race driver testing the Hyundai Ioniq 5N. He was faster on the racetrack with the fake gearbox than without it.
Simply, because that`s the way he is used to drive, I guess. There you have it: a big boy`s toy. And as such, it has its right to exist.
    N-Joy !!! 😁

As a new entrant to the EV market I find the quiet and smooth (no gear change) experience refreshing and a welcome change.

The fake gears, sat nav features and the interiour are really cool. I’m not so sure about the extriour though, but I’m sure it will appeal to those who will like it.

Been waiting for this car for a while, not sure if I want a EV3GT or a EV4GT, so eagerly await your review on that.currently drive an EV6 GT Line S AWD and really like it, but at 5 year old looking for a replacement less than £50k.

Now if only they could get navigation & speed limits right in the UK Kia’s with ccNC head units. Odds of traffic light working like Korea is not a chance at all.

14:19 in the UK we’d need timer for how long it takes the person at the front of the queue to realise it’s turned green… engaged first gear… released the handbrake and finally moved off 😂

The slidey table is for right handed noodle eating, or left handed in a few limited destinations.

Dont understand the fake gears but each to their own!

Imagine trying to explain fake gears and fake engine noise to someone who’s never driven a petrol or diesel car. They’d think you’d completely lost the plot.
“So the electric car pretends to change gears… and plays engine noises through the speakers…”
    “Why?”
“Because some people don’t like change.”
It’s basically a comfort blanket for those who can’t let go of the past.
