I took a trip to the Cotswolds to drive the all new BYD Dolphin G DM-i. This is the very first Supermini Plug-in Hybrid. I has an actually ingenious drive train and overall range of nearly 650 miles! With stylish looks and extremely competitive rates the BYD Dolphin is set to take the B Section by storm. The huge question is can it actually be that great and how does it drive?

    In 2003 BYD was formed, 2026 and is the 6th largest manufacturer in the world…wants to be top dog by 2030. That’s pretty impressive, even though I’d rather eat my own legs than own one. But we wanted cheap TVs, fridges, phones etc etc and now the Chinese are obliging with cheap cars….not for me as a car, but thanks for the review

      Oh dear… do you still ride horses? Visit China if you have a chance and you will be shock how medieval and backward Europe really is. Another thing is we get an old China tech here while they already move in to better things.

    I love it when you do phev’s Pete. As you had a gen 5 rav4 phev as a long termer can you see about testing the new gen 6 Rav4 please. I test drove one last month and I prefer my 73 plate rav4 phev to the new one. Would love your thoughts. Thanks for the video.

    On16inch wheels the ride quality will be very comfortable. Lower profile 18inch wheels will be a rough ride.

      They carry them high to avoid posing a danger to cars and vans etc, but my neighbour spiked a bus while pulling out of a t junction once (nobody hurt).

    The interior is a sea of cheap grey cloth and scratchy plastic…The exterior is quite passable…As an Audi A5 owner I couldn’t live with that interior, ever…The power train is technically interesting however, if I understood you right, the car is ALWAYS driven by the electric motor. The IC engine is just used to keep the battery topped up..?

      No the engine can also couple to the drive train via a clutch under full acceleration. It’s a good system to drive tbh.

    Not an EV fan to be brutally honest but this has to be best of both worlds which would cure that range anxiety.

      Plug-ins are the worst of both worlds. When an EV can easily do a road trip into most parts of Europe, why lug an empty battery around? And in town, a pathetic battery only range means you have to be charging it up all the time, and the battery life will be very poor – deeper cycling and little or no thermal management will leave plug-in hybrid batteries as bad as a Gen 1 Nissan Leaf’s

      If you really can’t see yourself in an EV, driving a Toyota hybrid is going to be better than a ridiculously over complex vehicle like a plug-in.

    Why didn’t you mention regenerative braking ? does it not have it ? does it have a one pedal driving mode ? You’re skirting around a lot of things that prospective buyers want to know about. The BMW i3 Range extender brought this idea in about 12 years ago and it was a great idea then and still is, I have a have a 94Ah i3 Rex myself, but I drive it as an EV over 99% of the time so the little 650cc twin is used very little except on long road trips to stretch the distance between recharges and because it’s at the back it’s pretty much inaudible when it’s on and I’m driving over 40mph. The only difference with the BYD is that the petrol engine is bigger, heavier and more complex which will likely mean higher maintenance costs, you’re also lugging around the weight of more fuel, the BMW keeps it more sensible with just a 9 litre tank, think BMW got the formula right.

    I’m sorry to say that I’m in the “pointless” camp for PHEVs and this isn’t persuading me any. The shortest range is so short that buyers will be so sick of plugging it in that they likely won’t and if your commute is enough for the longer range,… Just buy an R5.

    The engine can and does connect to the wheels. That’s how you get 212 hp. The way this hybrid system(and a lot of other Chinese systems too) works is exactly like Honda’s present day I-mmd hybrid sytem.

    There is an intermidiate shaft in-between the final drive(driven by the electric motor like toyota’s concept) and the generator shaft. When it’s needed, there’s a single wet multi-plate clutch(or a dog clutch) that allows the generator to connect to the final drive through that intermidiate shaft.

    It’s a single speed drivetrain that operates in both range-extender and parallel modes. The reason it’s so quiet is because the specific electric motors BYD uses is more performant at higher RPMs allowing the engine to stay connected to wheel speeds during acceleration

    It’s not complicated at all. Toyota’s planetary gearset just replaces the clutch allowing the engine to “connect” to the wheels through rpm differential instead.

    No one ever pulls the polystyrene out from under the floor to see if there’s a wheel well… sign of the times I suppose …🤷‍♂️
