‘EV ONLY’ future won’t work and needs discussing ! [My Thoughts] | 4K

Will an really work or are there other services that should be included in any future technique? I have actually spent the last week with a wonderful naturally aspirated V10 Audi R8 propelling me around and it has actually got me believing. It is so unfortunate we are seeing completion of the internal combustion engine in favour of battery electric and I am simply unsure it is the right strategy.

Mate it’s like a lot of things moving forward to the future you only have to look at how slow the roll out of solar panel systems and heat pumps and the cost and delay at getting the gear and as for cars I am with you on that great video as per the norm 👏😎

Hi Pete. I have to say I total agree with your comments. There are so many areas where current electric just does not hack it. Towing for one. There has to be a much broader look at how and we’re best to use the various fuel combinations to have the maximum impacts

@Petrol Ped It’s because I tow a caravan that I would never consider an EV. I just wish more companies than Mercedes produce Hybrid Diesel vehicles. In my opinion that is the best of both worlds!

If they are not affordable – people wont buy them and then the car companies have a problem

The government doesn’t care about motorists ,but only meeting there climate targets and see the car driver as a cash cow to meet there aims. Pushing them down the EV route without considering other options simplifies there agenda.

Very well stated Pete, I plan on driving my gas petrol MK7.5 GTI for the remainder of my driving years. At 7.5 decades old. 😊

Not ready for an ev yet. I’m just a bit younger than you and feel the same. Hope to either by a Macan or RS Q3 in the near future. And by 2030 perhaps at my age then will buy a small EV runabout ( If I can afford one).

Well at 7.5 decades I reckon you’ll be alright in terms of being able to fuel your Golf until you’ll no longer be feeding yourself! Even if no one in Govt has the courage to reverse the 2030 EV decision, there’s no reason to not expect fossil fuels to be readily available for at least another decade after that.

I generally agree with you, the government have jumped too far, too quickly,
There is no allowance for renewable synthetic fuels, hydrogen etc
As a consumer, its difficult because some manufacturers will not be supplying new models with Hybrid powertrains in the UK and just jumping in with EVs. No choice
The costs are too high for EVs, I’d rather go hybrid or PEV before having to go to EV because of a lack of choice in the market. I have changed cars every three or four years over the last 12 years, but may be forced to keep what I’ve got because the prices are so high, ICE, hybrid, PEV and EV all have higher prices to pay for the development that is being rushed through

Everytime I watch one of your videos about EV’s I end up sitting in agreement like a nodding dog!
I love my Tesla but I fully agree. The infrastructure isn’t good enough and alternative fuels should surely be looked at just as they are in F1.
Electric cars currently just transfer the emissions to a “central” place and Volvo recently did a study that the average electric car needs to have done 80,000kms to start becoming carbon positive against a ICE car.
Keep up the great work, you keep on raising important issues in this space!

F1 is frightened to death of losing the noise, which is why they’re chasing the synthetic fuel route. The problem is that all the major manufacturers R&D is going into EVs, so for the past few years F1 has for the first time NOT been at the forefront of automotive technology. If they don’t U-turn soon they’ll end up as out of date as propellors, when everyone else went to jets years ago. BTW – Volvo claimed the break even was 47k miles but that report from many years ago has been dubunked to death now. The real figure is more like 16k miles. https://insideevs.com/news/458458/legacy-automakers-backed-study-against-evs-debunked/

I really enjoyed this balanced view on the subject of EV’s and look forward to more thoughts on this subject as you continue to research it 👍 I’d would also like to hear your thoughts on autonomous vehicles, I love to drive and I don’t want a car which drives itself – why is this something manufacturers think we want/need or is there another master plan.

I can’t believe that any manufacturer is going to take FULL responsibility for their car and their technology when it ploughs into a crowd of people, which is why the driver always has to be ‘in control’ or rest a hand on the wheel etc…

I completely agree with everything you have said. Sadly we seem to live in a very polarized world of extremes which makes it very difficult to have reasonable conversations. We are not immune to this here in Canada also. For me, the truth/solution lies somewhere in the middle. As a Petrolhead, I will always have an ICE vehicle which will someday be complimented by a Hybrid EV, as a 100% EV vehicle will not meet my needs. In a country such as Canada with vast distances and extreme cold winters, I can’t possibly see how we can be 100% reliable on renewables alone.

We are in a real time of change. For now until the prices, infrastructure and technology of electric cars improve we need a ‘mixed economy’ of drivetrains. After dieselgate (not just the VW group) it was obvious that something in the car industry needed to change and that most brands weren’t that willing. The push by government has forced them to change, but you are right we are nowhere near ready for a 100% electric only future at present.

fully agree with you. i’d love an ev, but given the miles i do i can’t rely on the charging infrastructure as it is at the moment. when fast chargers are as common as fuel pumps and the way to pay for the electric is simplified, i’ll be more inclined to get an ev. really i’d like 2 things to happen. 1 more charging points and, 2 better battery range and / or much faster charging.

I’ve been driving EVs for 7 years and my wife 3 years. There’s not a chance in hell you’ll get us back in a petrol/diesel car. So many advantages to electric, from convenience of charging up at home/work/shopping, to the awesome performance, the much cheaper fuel and what I don’t miss whatsoever….the standing outside filling up with stinking fuel every week. I save so much time not going to petrol stations now.

Well said Pete. Been waiting a long time for a YT to come out and say what most people are realistically thinking/ feeling. We’re being Driven (excuse the pun) down an Electric Route without the thought for the alternatives. On Insta, I’m like seeing old 60/70’s cars converted to EV (ie Ford Mustang 350gt/ Bullitt shape) and whilst there great, nothing like an ICE car tbh. Have always felt that for town drivers EV is a good option, but pricing is the problem. You’ve made some great points on this channel, 1 of many reasons why it’s a great channel. 👍👍

Another issue that need mentioning is the cost of running a EV. My friend, a journalist in Australia is currently testing the Mercedes-Benz EQB 350, which I also got a chance to drive (nice car), but he’s done a costing on running it and it turns out it’s cheaper per kilometre to put petrol in his new Suzuki Swift than charge the car on home charger. That being said, fuel is way cheaper here in OZ, but the fast charging companies will start putting up the cost (already expensive) when the majority of cars are EV and they have you by the balls.

Great video, personally I don’t think EV’s are the ultimate solution, a combination of EV’s, Euro 6/7 ICE engines and hybrids utilising synthetic fuels are the answer. I know synthetic fuels are a few years away but the development into synthetic fuels is looking promising.
I’ve just ordered a brand new car and was struggling making the decision between petrol, hybrid or EV, ultimately I chose a petrol car as the cost of EV’s and hybrids are just too expensive at the moment and with the mileage I do in a year I would struggle to make back the difference in vehicle price. My petrol was £2000 cheaper then the equivalent hybrid and almost £12000 cheaper then an EV, that’s a lot of petrol I can buy for that money!

Would love to see a video on synthetic fuels, Porsche has just started synthetic fuel production in Chile and F1 is also looking at this type of fuel. There must be some belief in this technology if Porsche and soon Audi are developing it.

I think you’ll find that the sales figures of EVs in December will have given a false ‘boost’ by manufacturers ‘pre-registering’ cars in order to make their sales figures to avoid fines for not selling a big enough percentage through the year! I think you’re 100% correct in you reasoned assessment. If the product is good enough then people will buy… unfortunately at the moment BEVs, their cost, range etc and the charging network are simply not good enough…

I think you’ve got it spot on , electric/hybrid is definitely part of the future but in my opinion (as a vehicle mechanic) it is not nor should be considered the only future they have there place but not the answer just because governments think so , we need a mix of all fuel types not just forcing a round peg into a square hole , id like to see more info on synthetic/sustainable fuels as i think its definitely a big part of the future

There were two main issues that prevented me buying an EV when I changed cars last year.
First the charging infrastructure:- I live in a sixth floor flat and am reliant on street parking so a home charger simply isn’t possible; living on the Isle of Wight where nowhere is very far away you would think this is an ideal location for EV ownership, but the charging infrastructure is sparse and the public charging points don’t all work anyway.
Secondly range issues because I do sometimes drive on the mainland:- until recently I was travelling to the Midlands every month, distance 150 miles each way. The journey is mostly fast trunk roads and motorways, so at a steady 70 mph, there are very few EVs that are capable of doing that journey on a single charge with at least 20% charge left on arrival, especially in mid winter.
So I will stick with internal combustion for a while yet. Personally I hope that hydrogen is given a decent chance to prove its value as a fuel, and synthetic fuels made from crop waste. Those of us without home charging facilities seem to halve been completely overlooked in the current rush for battery electric vehicles.
