Can the JCB Hydromax Smash the Land Speed Record ?

Almost thirty years ago I consulted with the team behind the Thrust Supersonic Vehicle, including the driver Andy Green. That cars and truck was the first and is still the only cars and truck to drive faster than the speed of sound.

In 1996 Andy green drove the JCB Dieselmax the over 350 miles per hour breaking the diesel powered landspeed record. Well Andy and JCB are back with another land speed record attempt with the JCB Hydromax and I went to RAF Wittering to take a look.

    Andy Green is such a cool cucumber. I remember him breaking those records back in the day without breaking a sweat. He seemed so chilled about it all and completely fearless. Great guy!

      โ€‹@PetrolPedIt was! We camped near the north edge of the playa (the dry lake bed), so we could be out there at sunrise as they got set up for each days trials. Totally worth it. Really nice crew, had a chance to chance to chat with them. Compared to Bonneville, it was a very low key event.

    Google ‘Breakthrough’ the hydrogen 390ft superyacht built for Bill Gates. He never got to use it following his divorce. Now owned by a Canadian.

    Pedro, What a fantastic video, I love the engineering, and how fantastic this is being developed in Britain by a British company who is known for making diggers! Please more videos like this. Variety is the spice of life. Love it!

    Great to see Andy still going for speed records after all these years. I noticed he had left the Bloodhound LSR project, which appears to have stagnated into oblivion. Such a shame.

    Is that the DieselMax car re-engined, or is it a whole new chassis?

    1. @PetrolPed Avatar
      @PetrolPed

      The architecture is heavily based on Dieselmax but it is a totally new car. The big change are the control systems and obviously the hydrogen fuelling system.

    Hydrogen ICE may kinda work in a commercial sense, but itโ€™s a spectacularly dumb idea for cars.

      At the moment maybe but we should be looking at it for future transportation requirements ๐Ÿ‘

      โ€‹@PetrolPed you cant cheat the laws of thermodynamics…look it up. It cost more energy to produce than you get out. Might be fine at small scale specialist usage but at industrial scale it’s a dead end.

    3. @richardhoulton4016 Avatar
      @richardhoulton4016

      @PetrolPedThe Laws of Thermodynamics are not going to change, and the problems with burning hydrogen, with its low volumetric energy density in a ICE, are going to change either. The requirement for double the engine capacity to produce the same power because of hydrogenโ€™s poor volumetric energy density. And then there is packaging the massive fuels tanks in a car too. Using hydrogen with scavenged carbon to make biofuel that existing ICEs can use probably makes more sense. At least it can also be distributed via existing fossil fuel infrastructure and doesnโ€™t require multi trillion dollar manufacturing and distribution to be built from scratch (something that has also thrown the brakes on slightly less silly HFCVs).

  12. @barneyrubble9309 Avatar
    @barneyrubble9309

    Hydrogen is expensive to make and dodgy to ship. Its why the big ocean tankers cool it to liquid form (plus you can carry more when in liquid form). Hydrogen is NOT net zero in its production. In fact it takes more energy to make than you get out of it (at least with current tech). You cant buck the laws of thermodynamics. This can’t work at large scale and the building/farming industry can’t carry the cost long term.
    Nice idea and cool car though.

    Wittering, I used to listen to Vulcans taking off from that RAF station when I was growing up in Stamford. They used to make the windows rattle.
