BMW X5 xDrive50e – Finally a BIG PHEV that actually works !

I can't believe I have not driven a BMW X5 previously. I invested a week with the BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport LCI and need to state I was very amazed. Great all EV Variety and incredible performance when running as a hybrid!

I recently purchased a used ( 2023 ) Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 d AMG line plug-in Hybrid. The car is approx the same weight and dimentions and I get approximately 60 milles on a full charge of electric !!!!! no range anxiety and a beautiful car to drive 👌👌

As an owner of a 24 plate x30d (previous shape) I suspect the next generation x5 and 3 series are going to be a bit more of the modern BMW trend for marmite exteriors, giant screens and piano black plastic. I could be wrong of course….good review Ped and good to see you reviewing another Beemer

One of the best suv’s you can buy! The one reason I am not buying one, in belgium it looks like you get one for free with a box of cereals, everyone who can afford one has it! You see them on every corner of a street. Great vid as aways 👌🤟✌️🤘👍

Seeing Pete getting into the back of a car reminds me of the drummer in the Super grass pumping on your stereo video…

Enjoyed that Ped cheers. Lovely car, but surprised at the rear legroom, you would happily lose an inch or two from the boot and gain the extra legroom in the rear cabin.

Were I to be in the market for another Range Rover I suppose this would need to be on the shopping list…. but now my two are all grown up I no longer need such a thing. 🙂

I got my X5 50e at the beginning of September so had it about 7 weeks now and absolutely love it, I’ve put almost 4000 miles on it now and it’s a dream to drive on country roads and motorways. My previous car was a Mercedes GLC 300de, so diesel hybrid which was a great car but that only got about 25 miles on electric. The X5 driving experience is so much nicer with the 6 cylinder petrol and additional electric range. My other decision point was towing capacity, the merc’s capacity was 2000kg and I wanted a little more, the X5 now gives 3000kg capacity which covers pretty much anything I could possibly need.

How many miles do you get in x5 battery alone?

100k though, you could buy a superb estate a couple of years old in either diesel, petrol or petrol hybrid for 25k, and have £75k left for a 1-2 year old 718, or an Aston, a Ferrari California or a Gallardo Spyder

Had mine a year, got rid of a RR L460 for it being fed up with problems, never regretted it for a second. The 50e is incredible, flawless for 11000 miles now, always makes me smile, love it.

I’ve got a ‘24 30d, fully loaded with options and it is absolutely class. The G05 in any guise is superb.

I swapped my M340d for an X5 50e in September. The M340 is a fantastic car, but I like large SUVs for the high seating position and the ability to ‘waft’ along. I absolutely love the X5 for many of the reasons you report. Mine is also a Brooklyn Grey but with black wheels, however, rear wheel steering was not available when I ordered. It’s interesting that it is on the press car of the same age !!

Recently drove my bosses e50 x5 and was smitten, an absolute awesome car, can’t get over how economical it was if driven sensibly, and had a smile on my face the entire journey of over 300 miles

Just given back a 45e M Sport Pro after 3 years. Awesome car, as Joe says, one of the best all round vehicles you can buy today. Just does everything so so well

Nice review Ped. I drive a 2024 Volvo XC60 T8 recharge which is a bit smaller than the X5. 455bhp, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and 709Nm of torque. Infotainment not a match for BMW but just as good in every other way. Would love to see you do an XC 60 or XC 90 review!

I pretty sure I remember Joe preferring the diesel but guess it depends on if you mainly use it for really long journeys or not. I don’t like the sacrifice in boot space in a hybrid other than that I can’t fault it over a non hybrid

My buddy drove 3 of us to Ambleside, from Winchester, in May to do the Fred Whitton. His X5, 3l diesel, was super comfortable to do a long journey with all our gear plus 3 bikes. Better still was how comfy it was on the way back after what I can only describe as a truly challenging day on a bike! I’d buy an X5 in a heartbeat if I could afford one.

With the electric hybrid I can get from the office to home and back to the office. Then I’m out on surveys I can do over 350 miles without the worry to have to charge.. This is an amazing vehicle from BMW… and makes
It great for a company car with a BIK of 8%… I’ll be having another in 2 yrs time.. great review Pete..

Brilliant review Pete. A great car for those who need that space, performance and comfort.
Very expensive but no more so than comparable cars.
    Cheers, Tom
