Audi S5 Avant – As an S4 Fan would I buy one ?

I have had 2 Audi S4 Avants and absolutely liked them. Thanks to a modification in calling convention the brand-new Audi S4 is actually an S5. I invested a week with the S5 Avant. What were my thoughts and would I be lured to buy one?

I’m really not liking anything from the VAG group at the moment. They seem lost.
Cheap & dull interiors with piano black plastic & touch buttons everywhere (even on the top A8 cars), skimping on window switches, high prices and the naming fiasco is just the icing on the cake. They need to regroup and set a new roadmap, based on what people want, else they will be gone.
I made the above comment before watching the video. Now watching the video – that interior 😬🤦‍♂ I’m okay with screens (I drive an iX) but those thick screen bezels ! (15:10) …and shiny black plastic everywhere ! Not even an option to pay for thing something other than black plastic 🤯

I’m not one to complain about new car prices, I know they have significantly increased in the last 3-5 years, and accept that is the reality…… but £72k for this, no way !

Audi charging a top price for a car that is DOA and these will only sell with a large discount.
Right now Audi is no competition from anything from BMW

Other than the corner vents being in grey I love it.

Over priced and underwhelming to look at inside and out. It may drive reasonably well but similar money gets you a really nice, low miles Panamera. The Porsche would be my choice.

Thanks for the honest review Pete.

I agree with you Pete regarding the front styling. With the “nostrils” in silver and the over size grill work complete turn off for me. Audi/VW man here but both have lost their way as of late.

The cynic in me thinks Audi do this as they know that the reality is they can upcharge for the black edition. 😂

If you are an Audi fan, and I am, its all about how the car drives. There is an Audi ‘feeling’ you get, and from your review it appears that this car does indeed have that. The problem for me, and maybe I am showing my age here, is I prefer a more analogue driving experience. Those screens where its difficult to find things, the horrible haptic switches, annoying adas and all that shiny plastic, Yuck! Audi had it right with ‘virtual cockpit’ level technology and its associated interior ergonomics. I don’t know about you, but with most modern cars these days I feel like I am flying a computer and that, for me, interferes with the pleasure of driving.

Never having owned or driven an Audi apart from my new Father in Laws car on my wedding day from the church to the reception very very carefully. I am a huge fan of the marque though from my childhood watching the quattro’s on rally stages to the present day S or RS Avants just for their sportiness and practicality. This new car has a lot going for it but the fuel consumption and selling price are huge negatives for me.

The price is bonkers, Norwich Audi have a 25 plate with 12K on the clock. So off the bat, you are going to “lose” nearly £20K….Price aside, all the German premium brands really have to get over big screens, haptic buttons and piano black. I suppose on the flip side, it does have proper exhaust pipes this time round….Thanks for the video…

Absolutely right about the front design.Who would pass this in management as the final production. AND who cares about 6/8 light design patterns. And finally the price( let alone the depreciation ) As you can tell I’m not an Audi fan !

Agreed modern Audi’s have really lost their way, mid 2000s was their pinnacle and I’m sure they’re looking back to mirror these masterpieces.

BTW the satin aluminium around the windows looks really sophisticated, but those sections on the bumper 😢

Great review of the S5 Avant Ped! I think a full black pack and black exterior paint would make it look better. But all those screens and piano black just seems to ruin what should be at £70k plus so much better. I love estate cars and was considering this one on the list however now think I might be narrowing it down to Mercedes and BMW both seem to offer more for your money and better looking interiors imo!

The silver front bits ruin it for me too Ped. Audi used to look class, but those things stand out like dogs bollacks. Black pack needed for sure.

I sat in one on the weekend before having a test at a used RS7. Such a disappointment, an expensive car with a Temu interior. It’s not just the screens and the piano plastic it’s everything is cheap plastic.

Negotiating on trade in of RS7 and a lower interest rate deal. That is what an Audi quality interior is about.

71k. That price just doesn’t compute. I wouldn’t mind if I could see a huge jump in spec or quality, but for that price, new or used, there are some much better motors out there. Am honestly shocked.

Nope. Skoda Octavia VRS Estate for practicality that you and Joe love so much, then with the money you save, you could buy that classic TT convertible and lots of road trips!! 🙂🙂

Ive parked my S5 sportback next to one of these and it actually looks better in real life than it does on camera, but those interior screens are a deal breaker for sure.

does your Bianchi fit wheels on in the back (seat down) ? seesm like that might be a redeeming feature, though an expensive one….cannot help but think that buying the earlier generatiosn would be a better option.
