326PS Cupra Born VZ is the HOTTEST RWD Hot Hatch Right Now!

The dish sounds excellent. 326 horse power and rear wheel drive should provide a substantial quantity of efficiency and fun to the new . I will confess the Born is among my preferred EVs but I think the variety topping VZ has a couple of concerns …

The fact that a heat pump is extra on a car that is already way overpriced is a joke.

Great review, can’t fault anything you’ve said to be fair, the price is insane and those steering wheel controls would grind my gears I just know it, but it is an ev I would consider if I was in the market/had the money – wouldn’t be buying one new though as depreciation is too steep on BEV’s!

Mate of mine has a 230ps born with the smaller battery and he’s selling it as he wants something with more performance and better range, but the couple of times I’ve been in it I quite liked it I must say

With Regen do he brake lights come
On so the driver behind knows you are slowing ??! I was behind an ev the other day and it slowed but no brake lights came on . Good job I give myself distance . It’s dangerous

The brake lights on my LEAF come on once the regen braking comes in, otherwise in normal slowdown they stay off.Just like most cars.

I drive a Born Business standard car, with the 58Kwh battery, front and back camera, Traffel Assist etc. I love the looks. So do my neighbours. I love the driving caractristics, I love the interior. The chairs are great. Even every day I am on the road I see people looking at my car and they all like it. That is quite funny. If I am to be allowed to reach my pension, and have the money, I would probely buy the VZ. Have to wait for a few years though…… 🙂

I’ve had a “standard” Cupra Born V3 for 2 years – agree with your comments 😁.
The pano roof is pretty much essential (designers stop with the dark headlining !!!).
It’s taken VW ages to go back to proper buttons on their newer vehicles, maybe Cupra will get them in a few years time 😂.
My biggest gripe is with software upgrades (basically none until you take it in for it’s first service after two years) and the general complete lack of support/interest from VW (Cupra) for the car ☹️.
Really like the car, though 😂.

Good review Ped. I don’t see many Born’s on the road anyway but suspect there’ll be even less of these. The price goes down like a cup of cold sick with me considering all the decent cars you could get for similar money, like say a Golf R.

Agree with the comments about haptics buttons! As a current Born owner, this is on my list of replacements, but as you said, I would probably go pre-owned. I also like the R5, but the range is a lot lower and maybe too much for me. Great review, shame about the weather!

Hi Ped – for info… ev-database say that the gross battery on the VZ is 84 kWh and the useable is 79 kWh

I have had my Born VZ for 2 weeks. Same Dark Forest but with the Tornado wheels – it looks as good as it goes. So far, I’ve not had issues with inadvertant operation of the S/W buttons and the range has been predicting 296 – 300 after charging – January South of England, chilly but probably warmer that the rest of UK. Agree about the price though!

Great film, interesting car! You were very close to Porsche Reading on the first day! I’m thinking you came through Thatcham towards Reading on the A4, funny how we recognise roads!

What a nice car! I really enjoy both the blue and this Forest colour. The copper-coloured badging really sets the whole thing off very nicely. The interior styling looks lovely, but I would struggle with the somewhat overwrought and silly touch controls. The price is rather…aspirational. THis car deserved all its plaudits when is was introduced a few years ago. Sadly for THIS Cupra at THIS time, the Renault 5 does too many tasks better than this car and does it for far, far less. A laudable effort!

What a great review! You’re pointed out the 2 main things wrong with this car.
    Price and steering wheel buttons.
The Leon has proper buttons, not haptic and is much better for it. Shame they didn’t put these on the Born.
It’s going to be an expensive beast for a new buyer, but also anyone wanting to buy it up to 5 years old.
This is quite an odd thing, an EV kind to the environment, but costs £600 a year to tax!
But I guess, this is down to the double standards of the government we’re lumbered with….

Looks great but you’re right. That’s into reasonably-specced Polestar 2 or Tesla Model 3 territory and those have significantly more space and performance.

If they (Cupra) put that sort of power and drive train in the up and coming Raval, WOW !! that will be a flier. Thanks for the Vid

I’ve had my VZ for a month and love it. Got the 1st edition so you do get the heat pump with sunroof and semi autonomous driving. Cupra offering a reasonable deposit contribution with 0% APR and a charger or charging card. Much more reasonable to run than my diesel van.

Shame Pete failed to mention some great PCP deals at the moment on all Borns. I have a First Edition VZ, which has heat pump and sunroof included, I got £4500 contribution, £1000 dealer cash back, Ohme home charger installed for free and 0% finance, so added up to a large saving combined. For those people who moan about depreciation of EV,s try financing a Golf GTI over the same period and it will cost you more purely because of the finance rate difference. Factor in charging at home for peanuts , half the cost of petrol.

    @martingill6996

Styling 👍🏼and better than the ID3. The VZ does make the car great, Perhaps if they had made the necessary changes to the buttons and made it 42k max with the extras it would be a winner for those who want the performance.

If you can you should try to get an EX30 in, the normal RWD version as while it’s not as sporty or dynamic as the born and much smaller battery, it offers most of the features for less, and when you push it because it’s a lot of power to the back with a short wheelbase it behaves like a Clio V6, and it can be a right hoot to drive down a B-road.
