2026 Vauxhall Astra PHEV – Brilliant Pricing BUT is it a Brilliant Car ?

I flew to Divide in Coatia to drive the most recent iteration of the renowned family hatch from Vauxhall, the Astra. There are 3 drivetrain choices to pick from at launch. I checked the Plug-in Hybrid. Numerous positives to talk about but this automobile does have a few things it could do much better!

It reminds me of the car that would come from DDR had it still existed.

Wonder if they can update the gearbox logic via software to improve it

I was thinking the same — maybe they’ll collect the professionals’ feedback and by the first customers deliveries it will be sorted.

It’s interesting that Vauxhall have been able to continue their corsas and Astra’s offering a choice of power trains, shame ford didn’t adopt the same strategy with the fiesta and focus.

My second car when I was 18 was a 6 month old MK1 Astra EXP. Great car. My 4th was a new MK1 Astra GTE, which I thought was amazing. I have a very soft spot for the Astra. I’m not in the market for a family hatchback anymore but if they did a hot one, either plug in or electric, I would be very tempted.

    Great review as always Pete.

I remember when the Astra was the easiest car to steal, and the most stolen. But that was some 30 years ago. I wonder how long price parity will hold, when the Discovery was launched the price parity didn’t last long.
    An interesting car .

I guess they have this vehicle well set for their target market. Unfortunately these days noone who’s an enthusiast is buying a Vauxhall. Its been designed and engineered for someone who doesn’t care about gear shifts and torque curves.

The Mk1 FWD GTE at least in Opel spec was a classic but it went a bit downhill from there.

the sport setting has become a part of the set of three default settigns that are needed to sell a car rather than of any real use ( and rarely used) with only marginal differences in cars that only need one factory setting. wonder if a GTE down the line might give you a bit more of what you want or if they are really just aiming for the competent and value market – that Ford left behind

Whilst not an Astra fan (other than the GTE I had briefly in 89/90), I think the concept of price equivalency across the different power trains is the way forward
