    So then, it will be the Volvo if you need to choose based on reliability , robustness and resale value

    So much piano black interior trim for a car thats worth 100k+. How lame

      It’s cheap plastic that costs far less to produce and fit , compared to leather or wood veneer . However, this piano plastic , scratches unbelievably and attracts dust and fingerprints/ smudges , like nothing else! It’s almost the worst material to use for a car interior!
      £90,000 is an abject disgrace. Chinese electric cars get away with it at the £25-30k price point .

    Visually the Range Rover looks the best outside and inside…. But £100,000 plus is a crazy reflection of where we are at with cars. No wonder people are buying KIA EV9s.

      Haha, you really snuck in the obvious choice here. PHEVs are a stupid medium solution, like a horse-and-carriage with a gas heater. The EV9 beats both of these cars in all aspects. Unfortunately, the Volvo EX90 isn’t as good an EV as the Kia is either. What a world we live in!

      @Sjalabais Agree, the worst of both worlds. Two lots of things to go wrong. The best solution, as it has always been, is ICE only

      @graemejones9707 Try owning an EV for a few years to get away from the basic horse and carriage. It’s worth it!

    I’d go volvo. People complain it didint change for the last 10 years, but i dont see the need to when the thing looks this bloody good. The other german cars have changed generations to worse in my opinion. Both look great but to me Volvo taked the edge.

      Don’t be silly Q7 been around 10 years still better than an XC90 with a 4 cylinder likewise GLE, X5, been around + Cayenne superior cars.

    2. @kyronrc Avatar
      @kyronrc

      @JohnGuidetti751agree… Q7 is a master of an SUV, so good i bet the new one wont be better (based on latest Audi’s). Still, XC90 isnt far behind, if even it is.

    Pretty sure the Volvo has voice control which you can use to adjust the cabin temperature.
    My 6 year old V60 does.

      @RogerIsation

      Yup, I’ve had a V60, XC60, Polestar 2 and XC90 over the past 6 years and you can just tell it to raise/lower temperature, turn on heated seats etc.

    I have a V60 Ultra T8, having recently swapped from a V90 I’d had for six years.
    One of the things I’d like What Car, and indeed other reviewers, to include is how well voice control works. The old Sensus system could be incredibly frustrating in misunderstanding the simplest commands, while the new Google system is an absolute revelation, which means I don’t need the screen buttons and just tell the car what I want.
    This could make or break other marques I’m sure.
    Oh, and I’m pretty sure the XC90, like my smaller version, has front massage seats, which are great fun on long drives.

    I do not believe I heard you say what drive mode you put the Volvo in. To get electric only for full range you need ‘Pure’ mode, which on a long journey is not the most efficient. Set the sat nav and let the car work out the best drive mode in Hybrid. Not the ideal test if you did all electric first

      @josephgittos3787

      I have just commented this , its pretty good how the systems work it out I have a p300e evoque and does the same on satnav journeys

    I bought a BMW X5 50e earlier this year. I test drove both of these cars too, and felt the BMW had the best drivetrain of the 3, and offered the most value for money when you factored in the discounts that were available on in-stock cars at dealers

    There was a silly race on Top Gear several years ago in London, 4 ways around, bike, car, public transport and strangely a boat, out of all of these the best form of transport was public transport in London and the quickest really. The car driver was very stressful, so was the guy on the bike, and end up covered sweat, and you have to discount the boat as not really possible, Then to make matters worse they had a runner do 26 miles around London, while one drive a small car the runner won. There is no reason to have a car in London, parking, costs, charging (unless on drive) stress. Hire a car when you leave is the best way and cheaper. The people who drive around London are just kidding themselves the average speed has gone up since the horse and cart.

    So the Volvo is cheaper, has a nicer interior, is more spacious, has a bigger boot, is more refined, rides better, handles better, and quieter.
    The only drawback is 10 miles less range for like 40 grand less.

    I will take the Volvo XC90 plug-in any day. We recently traded in our XC90 for an EX90. What a mistake! The EX90 spent more time in the shop than in our possession. My wife is requesting a “buy back”. We ordered a 2026 XC90 and looking forward to taking possession of a SUV that has been refined over the last 10yrs.

    I hope nobody drives electric first and then patrol on a longer journey, combining them makes more sense

    1. @ashliehiggins Avatar
      @ashliehiggins

      Unfortunately that only works if you set the nav in the car if you use CarPlay/android auto the car defaults to using electric first. But that will still burn through the battery for a single trip leaving the return on all petrol.

    Great presenters on What Car 👍. I test drove both of these and deposited the 460e (lust!) but cancelled and went for my 4th X5, this time the 50e which after 6 months of town and weekly 90 miles commutes and 4 x 600 mile Cornwall returns, it is AWESOME! I normally get over 60 miles pure electric and sometimes 67. 300 miles to Cornwall with a full charge (I don’t hang around) 36mpg overall. The performance is incredible! Love it.

    Love the Volvo! The open pore wood trim is real actually. It’s either birch or walnut, depending on the trim.

    I disagree about the touchscreen on the Range rover, it looks worse than the Volvo by far, other testers have said the Volvo’s touchscreen is brilliant, as for the engine noise again I disagree, the silence inside the cabin of the XC90 is amazing, only under hard acceleration can you hear the engine!

    I’ve got one of the last of the pre facelift (2024) XC90 T8s. Great car. Had it a year now. Never missed a beat. Charge it a few times a week. Avg so far 44mpg for 5600 miles. It’s nippy for a big car, comfy, super practical and pretty nice to look at. Picked it over the PHEV Defender 110. Was just worried about the Defender reliability. Great looking car the Defender.

    2. @Wayne74Cole Avatar

      @hilmikoseoglu9532 no idea mate. It was the reliability that put me off getting one. They were both similar price to buy too.
