      These cars make so much sense for urban Europe. Small cars have the benefits of being easy to park, lower energy consumption per distance. Many of these have small rear seats which are fine with small kids or even adults for short distances (as long as they aren’t really tall). My wife and I have a 2 door Mini in the US and quite frankly is serves use perfectly 98% of the time. Ideally I’d like to replace is with a 4 door Mini. Just 6″ longer so not all that much bigger, but 3″ of leg room for rear seats make them more usable and 3″ extra trunk space really helps as well. A few times a year I’d love to have real rear doors and more rear seat space. Most of the time we have the rear seats folded down and we basically have a 2 seater with station wagon level of trunk space.

    This looks very true to the ethos of the original. Bring on the #2+2

    Guaranteed Amsterdam canal belt and south hit, especially if they do the premium version with the designer brands. The only problem is that it is an actual car, which means you’ll need to enter the back of the queue for a parking permit and pay full rate when parking outside of your zone. So that’s an advantage the Birò and the Opel Rocks (but preferably a Birò, because the Rocks is also for the plebs) still have.

    I remember when I first got an EV 5 years ago, they were pretty much all mid/large SUV’s £40k plus (Model 3 excepted), or super mini’s £30k plus. Battery prices and build tech was still very expensive.

    Fast forward 5 years and what a difference! Loads of small cars out now or announced under £20k together with lower prices for most EV’s generally. Better range, better charging, cheaper prices. Lots of more interesting designs now too.

    Imagine where we’ll be in another 5 years.

      @b@brownhairydog6472p, but it wasn’t possible to make smaller EV’s economically for a long time. Looks like we’re getting there now, but the really big changes are still to come.

    He says it’s only slightly longer than the previous Fortwo which is true for the latest one but it started out at only 2.5 meters. I had that one from 2000 and then a later one from 2010.

    Genius. This is what Cities need. City Mayors should give cars of this dimension, electric powered, special dispensation against congestion charges to encourage take-up. Perhaps dedicated parking spaces for this type of vehicle.

    The hashtag symbol, when used before a number, has always meant the word number as long as I can remember (the 80s) so why not the smart no.2. Hashtag 2 sounds completely ridiculous as a car name. Might as well call it the Apostrophe 2. That makes as much sense.

    1. @elelegidosf9707 Avatar
      @elelegidosf9707

      “Number 2” has another connotation, though. Imagine being down the pub and saying, “I drive a number 2” or “I keep a number 2 in the garage”. 🤣

    2. @grahamjohnson4702 Avatar
      @grahamjohnson4702

      I think the use of the hashtag 2 for the name is great, and I think you need more research to find out the real meaning of the hashtag.

    3. @dogsbodyish8403 Avatar
      @dogsbodyish8403

      And it’s only relatively recently that the term “hashtag” has been in use – it always used to be just plain “hash”. “Hashtag” is so unwieldy and longwinded, and I personally find it extremely irritating.

    4. @vernhill-wv7pp Avatar
      @vernhill-wv7pp

      @elelegidosf9707 I hadn’t thought of that. Could be a bit embarrassing.

    5. @vernhill-wv7pp Avatar
      @vernhill-wv7pp

      @dogsbodyish8403You’re right, so really the car is a ‘hash 2’ which sounds even worse than a ‘hashtag 2’.

    Sorry at the suggested price, for me it would be the Honda Super N or Renault Twingo which are both more practical four seaters for similar money.

    1. @jsavill7925 Avatar
      @jsavill7925

      I sat in a SuperN. I really liked it and it was surprisingly roomy. Shame it doesn’t gave a better range though. As I am a 1 car household it isn’t really practical for me.

    2. @sergentcolon1 Avatar
      @sergentcolon1

      @jsa@jsavill7925 a city car, range isn’t the main requirement. I’ve test driven one and it’s the most fun car I’ve driven since I used to own a Mini 1275GT many years ago. The Twingo will give better range for a similar price to the Smart as well as being much roomier and IMO better looking too.

    1. @Headmaster2NZ Avatar

      It’s designed and built in China. The U.S. are so scared of China and Chinese cars. Denying Americans safe, high tech and affordable cars. No Smart #2 in the U.S. anytime soon. But you can still get a F150 for $70,000 and a lot of gas usage everyday.

    This is what Smart is getting right that the others don’t.. a small car, even if it doesn’t go very far, should charge FAST. It matters so much less if the range is limited if you can charge quickly! I don’t know why this isn’t the norm.

    1. @SirMopy Avatar
      @SirMopy

      doesn’t need to go far, because it’s mainly a citycar! i use my fortwo also for the city and it’s the best car ever!

  18. @ewadge Avatar

    Even if the range goes down to 150 miles in winter, that is a really useable vehicle. It is also pretty classy inside. I’m sure it will appeal to many.

    For soft touch material, less seats, less practicality than either Super N or Twingo, I really can’t see how this car makes any sense. The Super N is more feature laden and costs less. Comes with a decent Bose sound system too.
