NEW BMW iX4 revealed – another range record breaker!

BMW has just unveiled a new electrical SUV with a rather impressive party technique– a declared variety of 514 miles. Meet the new BMW iX4, a coupe-SUV that takes the foundations of the excellent iX3 and wraps them in a much sleeker, sportier body. However can a sloping roofline actually make that much difference?

In this walkaround, we take a closer look at the BMW iX4 50 xDrive and explore how BMW has actually managed to squeeze so much range out of its most current electric SUV. The trick is aerodynamics. The iX4's roofline sits 45mm lower than the iX3's, assisting to reduce drag and enhance effectiveness. And with a big 108.7 kWh battery, this range-topping version can formally cover to 514 miles on a charge.

There are some seriously impressive numbers somewhere else, too. Twin electric motors produce 469hp, while charging can reach a theoretical peak of 400kW, enough to amount to 240 miles of range in simply 10 minutes under the best conditions. A more inexpensive 40 xDrive will likewise be offered, along with an upcoming M60 xDrive with 612hp.

However there's a catch. That swoopy roofline comes at the expense of practicality, with less boot area, a more restricted opening and no rear wiper. You'll also pay around ₤ 3,000 more than you would for a comparable iX3. Inside, however, it's much the same story, with BMW's scenic iDrive display screen, 3D head-up display and most current infotainment technology.

So how does the iX4 compare to rivals such as the Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback, Polestar 4 and Porsche Macan? Its headline variety and charging figures definitely make an impression, although there's lots of competitors when it concerns efficiency, rate and practicality.

The question is whether those additional miles are worth sacrificing some area and spending more cash. Is the iX4 the better choice, or would you stick to the more practical iX3?

Having seen the iX3 in the real world, I genuinely don’t mind the design, but this looks miles better!

I saw one just yesterday and for a second I thought if it is the new X5 since how large it looked.

490 litre boot, what is that is the real world, probably about 100 – 120 bottles of wine (if still boxed) or 150 if loose. Yea, that would work

It’s annoying that both BMW and Mercedes have put smaller batteries in their RWD versions instead of making them the Long Range editions. No doubt they’ll do the same with this one.

Agreed. I would love a single motor ix3 with the full-size battery

I Heard that you have more in the base Version so that the car basically isnt more expensive than the ix3. At least referring to other reports

No thanks. I am going to wait for the I3 Tourer. Likely to be cheaper and much more practical.

It’s got me thinking back to the X5 and X6 siblings. Never saw many X6’s on the road, although this looks more practical.

Weight! All reviewers forget to mention it. If someone wants to run the numbers, I bet you could calculate the range per kg, plus and/or minus for aero
