Cupra has actually taken one of our preferred fun electric cars and trucks and turned up the heat. The outcome is a useful household electric hatchback which is improved enough to drive everyday, however is as rewarding to drive as some supercars.

The name is a reducing of the Spanish word 'veloz'- which equated into English methods 'quickly'. So it has a new motor at the back which produces 320bhp. To put that into point of view, it's about the like a Porsche 911 from a decade earlier.

However what has it been like to live with? We've had the keys for six months to find out what the VZ resembles on a daily basis. Join Tom and Ginny as they spill the beans on the elements they've come to like … and hate.

    I really don’t get the issue with the haptic buttons. You get used to it and is no longer an issue. It just shows how little there is wrong with the car if that is what the complaints are.

    Wipers are a very important issue especially in places where rain never ends. Good point Tom.

    These double headers/2 points of views long term conclusions are FAR BETTER than the usual fare you put out which tend to be “manufacturer brochure intro reviews” whether you mean to or not. Wife and I test drove this last year, twice. It was a close miss of us. For the price, apart from the excellent seats, bit of a boring /dark cabin. Half a glovebox/no frunk/annoying haptic button steering wheel/no powered boot (at this price point), cheap feeling plastics in some places, and no 1 pedal drive. Also heat pump and Adaptive Chassis Control was extra. So don’t know if that has changed now as you intimated that they were standard.Also just did not feel that fast. Just heavy. But as commented by another owner there is an actual click/button you push through with the throttle pedal to get the extra performance. If they sort some of the criticisms and lower the price a bit, would consider it again. Ticks many boxes otherwise.

    The big dealbreaker is that there is NO trailerhitch!

      There’s none on that platform. We have an ID3. It can’t tow either.

    I have a Born V2 and it is a joy to drive. The haptic buttons are much less of an issue than I was led to believe. I would strongly recommend.

      If that’s the case why do you think VW group is going to the expense and trouble of abandoning haptics and going back to physical buttons.

      @@whatthe6532 Had a V3 for a couple of years, the haptic buttons are really not a problem 😂 – but REAL buttons ARE still better – so I would probably wait until VW/Cupra change over.

    Look at that steering wheel stitching that’s just in shot from 3:20 🫣

    The wipers could likely been fixed with a software change, providing they’re using independent stepper motors like the Food Kuga does.

      You cannot physically pass the lower wiper through the upper wiper, you would actually need to fit new wiper arms as well as adjust which moves first/last.

    Excellent review!

    Seat/Cupra whatever they’re calling themselves these days….do produce an excellent EV. Just a shame they have to raid the VAG parts bin, those front seats are truly awful, style over substance. Its not a 5 seater, its a 4 seater, no one can use that central seatbelt/seat; why even bother with either? Just stick an arm rest there and call it a four seater.

    Shout out to Ginny Buckley, you look fab, I really enjoy your commentary while driving. How do you keep looking so good!?

    We need more Tom! So down to earth, but also incitful and thoughtful too; its great to see and hear you on screen. Hopefully more videos with you in them soon?

    I’m so confused Ginny! My ID.3 doesn’t have flappy paddles for the regen braking! I’ve had my car for nearly 3 years and haven’t had a single issue with the haptic buttons! I’ ve not once accidentally caught them while driving 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m actually planning on getting a Cupra Born V3 later this year when my ID.3 goes back.

    I’ve had a V3 for over 2 years, the one issue I have is the software – newer cars may get OTA updates, but the the older cars NOT !!!
    VW/Cupra support has not been good – my main concern going forward.
    Fortunately, the car is really nice to drive – the software and user interface not so much 😢.

    Test drove one, and liked the drive. The dealbreaker for me was the rear passenger area. No soft finish on the door cards at all, no passenger AC. It just didn’t feel any different inside than the v2 or 3.

    It’s nice to see car companies looking to the hot hatch segment, but I think I’ll keep my Focus ST for now.
    50bhp more and 130nm torque more and only 0.1 faster 0-62.
    Plus (or minus) no manual ‘box, that stupid window switch.
    Anyway, it’s a nice start. I’m still optimistic about the future of hot hatches.

    Had mine 4 months same colour and same wheels good looking and just the the right size for two oldies – sober, quiet, smooth and long range, but fast and fun and satisfyingly sharp handling when I feel like it. Inadvertent operation of the haptic controls has not been a problem for me.

    I’ve had my VZ since October and the haptics work perfectly well with only the occasional touch of the button that changes control between HUD and main driver display. This is because of my right hand position during maneuvering and nothing else.
    The rear window control isn’t an issue either, double tap to move control to the rear windows and double tap again to cancel it…

    I have the exact same model… overall, I LOVE this car.. however, I have to agree with you on the majority of the few issues you’ve found. The windscreen wipers are my main issue. The phone charging is also only regular speed, I used to have a plug in cigarette lighter charger which was Super charge 45w, so now my phone merely holds its charge while I drive rather than fully charge in half the time. I’d like the option to plug in for fast charging still🤷‍♂️….Personally, I don’t have an issue with the haptic buttons, I’ve got used to them and rarely catch them. I too love the seats…although my wife does struggle more to negotiate the high seat sides when getting out of the vehicle due to her height. If I’m being really pinickity , I’d appreciate some air vents more at face level, as the lower level whilst being fine for heating in winter isn’t quite as effective for cooling your face in the heat of summer. I’m glad I went for this one rather than the 77kw option.

    But 5.6 seconds isn’t all that fast for an EV, especially when considering it’s more expensive than the Smart #1 Brabus, but that does it in 3.8 seconds, and the fast MG4 is similar

    1. @hughmarcus1 Avatar
      @hughmarcus1

      The MG4 is rubbish though. Owner surveys rate it the worst EV by a mile. Plus it’s been hit multiple times with the ugly stick. 😉

  20. @Colt16v Avatar
    @Colt16v

    No wonder EV adoption is slow if those are true prices for cars over there. In DK, a fully specced Born VZ with those wheels, color, sound system and panoramic roof is around £43.000. A Polestar 2 LRSM with plus and pilot packs are £45.000 and can tow stuff. And got better range.

    Also, the software is stupidly complicated. To set a plan, first you have to be at the place you want to charge at, then go through 4-5 steps to set the plan, then go back to main charging menu to activate the charge plan you already configured. In basically ANY other car, you set a timer for lets say 01:00 to 06:00, and then that´s it. Other cars don´t care where you are, or make it overly complicated, they just charge at the given time you set. And they do it over and over again, it doesn´t cancel it when it´s done.
