Every week, the Electrifying.com fulfill online to talk about all the important matters at hand. Such as the weather, what we're all having for our tea and who disposed who in last night's Love Island. Between these heavyweight topics, we likewise speak about electric automobiles. A lot. Most likely an unhealthy amount to be truthful.

And when we do discuss cars, we learn a lot. From market gossip to the more ordinary functionalities of electrical cars and truck ownership, it's the place where we dish the dirt on the cars we've been driving and provide our own verdicts on the most recent electrical cars and truck news. We also like to have an excellent make fun of the daftest littles anti-electric news that we've seen in the press.

We can't guarantee that you'll learn much. You most likely will not. However if you elegant 30 minutes of idle chat and chatter about the world of electrical cars and trucks, we're here for you. If you like it/ dislike it/ believe it's too long or too short, let us know.

    Tom says EV’s ‘are just better’ than combustion engine.Other than tailpipe emissions, in what way? They can’t compete on range. Take away all the subsidies, and the majority can’t compete on price.
    Tech? Other than regen braking and vehicle to grid/load, show me one piece of tech on an EV that can’t go in a petrol car.
    Now you could go the ‘they’re smooth, quiet, have instant torque’ etc route, but you can say the same about a supercharged V8 BMW and I wouldn’t climb over one of those to get into a Nissan Leaf.
    The uncomfortable truth is that outside of a very narrow set of criteria EV’s are not better. If they were, the ZEVM wouldn’t be needed because natural market forces alone would kill off the combustion engine. I think the government have for the most part realised this, which is why they are dragging out the review. If anything I think they’re more likely to try and accelerate it than water it down in any way.

      Ummm how about not pumping toxic fumes directly near children and asthmatic people or really any living thing? How about the massive reduction in moving parts, cheaper and less frequent maintenance? How about cheaper to run overall? So on and so on…

      If you think the oil industry has had no impact in manipulating and pushing against the government role out the ZEV mandate then you are unfortunately very sheltered. A massive industry that has been known to push things under the rug to line their own pockets are of course going to push again and misinform others to maintain their power. Hope this helps 😊 You think everyone would move away from something so easily when its all they have known throughout generations, some people are just allergic to change

      But….. Here are the main benefits over ICE
      I drove ICE cars for over 25 years, and now EV’s for over 6 years. EV’s are better -> Much more energy efficient, no tailpipe pollution, can run on renewable electricity, smoother & quieter, instant torque & power (a supercharged V8 BMW is no where close), much less brake dust (regen braking) , so many fewer moving parts = less service & maintenance cost, reduced fuel price volatility and currently costs 20% of nothing to run.

      “show me one piece of tech on an EV that can’t go in a petrol car”?
      I can ‘fill up’ at home 😊, plus all of the above

      Don’t think EV range, charging and tech today, is where it stops. there is so much more development to come, this year and beyond
      -> Range : EV’s coming this year have 500+ miles of range
      -> Charging : EV’s coming this year have batteries that can charge in 10-80% in 5 mins. Flash chargers being installed in the UK , Europe and across the world.

      You might climb over the V8 to get into the new i3 M launching later this year

      Except for being less likely to break down. No issues with needing a clutch or water pump, or turbo or injection replacement. I had all that on my ICE. Had to take that to the dealership 15k for oil and filter changes, changing timing belt after 120k km and then every 60k come on. Ice cars are good for dealerships but there are less mechanics…. Don’t start me not going to the gas station to breath in some carcinogenic fumes 🙂

      I am fully expecting a Monty Pythonesque response (so I thought I would start it) on “What have the EV’s done for us? Nothing!”

      “What about the re-fueling at home?”
      “And the 12v battery maintenance”
      “Bidirectional Charging”
      “What about that there are fewer mechanical parts, so lower running costs, no belts, spark plugs, etc.”

      “OK! Apart from the re-fueling, 12v stuff, Bidirectional Charging and lower maintenance costs, What have the EV’s done for us?”

      “Erm… better stability due to the lower centre of gravity, improved storage using space where engines unused to be, immediate cabin heating on a frosty morning rather than waiting for the engine to warm up, one pedal driving, Instant torque, and a karaoke machine so Nicola can belt out a few tunes from Cher”

      “OK! OK!, OK! Apart from the re-fueling, 12v stuff, Bidirectional Charging and lower maintenance costs, all the other stuff including Cher karaoke, What have the EV’s done for us? NOTHING!”

    Both carrot and stick would be ideal, but I’d have to head into the quantum world to find a violin small enough, such is my lack of sympathy for car manufacturers. If they’d spent less money lobbying governments to scrap the mandates and more on making and promoting decent EVs, they might not be in this situation. This year’s mandate is 33% EV sales, yet the Audi garage in my village has less than a dozen EVs on display compared with about 200 combustion models; they’re really not pushing EVs.

      Maybe they should stop giving out carrots and give out chocolate instead, I think that would be way more popular. (Or have I misunderstood something 🤔)

    My VW ID7 (Swear Box) which was leased through my employers grren car scheme not only came with VW Car Mats it also came with branded ones from the lease company so I actaully have a spare set. Plus of course the wraning triangle, first aid kit, charging cable, cargo and dog nets and enough high vis jackets to keep a pot holing crew equipped !

    BMW were said to have sold 50,000 iX3 in news articles today, the Debrecen plant has capacity for 150,000 at three shifts. BMW are adding a shift this month to cope with demand, so presumably that means they’ll have capacity for 100,000 vehicles now split between the current model and the entry level. The i3 is being made back in Munich. So I doubt we’ll see much less than a year delivery estimates from now unless it’s a small battery version order or a lot of people cancel to order an i3 instead

      Volvo are also reporting high demand for the EX60, so we’re unlikely to see many of those until 2027. The new 800V Polestar 3 might be the alternative of choice which you can get your hands on

    Manufacturers need a stick, otherwise they will just carry on as they are making ICE cars. Price is critical to EV adoption and programmes like yours were predicting ” price parity” by 2025. This didn’t happen and the government had to step in with subsidies. Volume is key to reducing prices so you can’t just leave it to the market – you need a mechanism to “encourage” manufacturers to reach those volumes. Once volumes are reached manufacturers should start to make some money. Tesla had volume and were making money. It can be done.

    I woud say let’s reduce the penalty but increase the emission tax to 3x more. Mandate dealership to start the advertisement with you will emit this much CO2 by driving each year, your fuel cost will be this much, with this much maintenance cost over 6 years. I would also say they would be fined for advertising ICE cars, prohibited from offering less then 1% loan on Ice cars… Lets see how it goes… +1 all fines goes into charging infrastructure.

    ZEV Mandate – instead of fining the car makers £11000 a car that goes into government coffers the car makers who don’t meet the sales numbers could be forced to reduce their list prices on EVs by that amount so the consumers see the benefit.
    Citroens – can we have an electric DS and SM please or perhaps we could have an electric rebirth Volvo C30

    I own an Ioniq 5 in the US and a Renault 4 in Italy. Sliding rear seats, check. No step in load floor with seats folded down. Integrated OBD2 function with built in monitor sw, heated seats an steering wheel, smart keys that set mirrors/seats/outside mirrors.

    The Smart #1 has sliding and reclining rear seats! It has amazing legroom as standard, but a boot on the smaller side, so it’s very useful to be able to configure that as you need.

    Tom, I’ve just had a thought that you probably won’t like because maybe it’s a little more work for you to do, but what would you think about compiling ‘Tom’s Top 10’ of the ‘Efficiency Chart’s’… for all us consumer EV Data pickers… this may also increase the response to asking everyone to submit their real world EV consumer usage data… and who doesn’t like a chart, the excitement & anticipation of it changing every ‘Kilowatt Half Hour’ may also attract other viewers too, because we all know how true WLTP figures are don’t we, sorry Tom 🙂

    I don’t think we should necessarily let the market decide. We didn’t let the markets decide whether to mandate seat belts. or increased emissions standards. or ADAS (hmm). Similarly drink driving limits, banning smoking in public places. The list goes on. If we agree this is a necessary transition then provide manufacturers a roadmap that is stuck to – so they can plan.

    I think the problem with Selantis is that it launches so many different brands at similar price points that all use the same parts. VW group did a good job over the years of using the same parts in different brands but making them feel a little more expensive in the Audi (although not so much since cutting back to save money) sporty in the cupra and functional yet up market in Skoda, then pricing them in different price points.

    2:09 the absence of heated seats on all but the top spec R5 has had me falling out with our fleet manager 🫣 c’mon Renault, sort it ouuuut. Even a £600 heat pack would be better than no choice at all.

    Carrot and stick. Need to put out the carrot for manufacturers and buyers to convert and the stick to whack the knuckles for the makers that are half-assing their attempts. Being consistent about the message and also making the complimentary investments into the infrastructure, law updates and education for both users and the repair folks is key. We’re like children. We don’t eat the veggies or do our chores because it’s good for our health and makes the space nicer. We do it so we get to go play with our friends and don’t get a swat to the behind. If given the choice, children would exist off hotdogs/mac & cheese and have a trail between mounds of junk from their door to the bed. It’s the rare child that is a neat freak who loves their veggies and is self-motivated to study ahead for school.

    renault were known for sliding rear seats and i had them in a scenic from 2002 no idea why the new scenic doesnt have it
