ID7 Tourer being delivered tomorrow. As a new to EV driver I am looking forward to:
    1) Not having to chip pack ice off the windows every morning in the winter.
    2) Not having to hope it starts in the cold weather
    3) A powered tailgate as the dirty slimy road dirt hands I can do without

Great podcast, love the conversational nature of these 👏The problem with EVs and insurance is that even 10 years ago anyone passing their test could only afford a used 1.2 corsa or 1.0 fiesta and with 0-62 times of 9 or 12 seconds these cars were just enough to be useful but not enough to be too dangerous in the hands of a new driver. Now used EVs are largely achieving sub 6 second 0-62 times for a family sub which is into old school super car fast or even hyper car fast when you look at a 5 year old high milage Tesla for £14k. We need more sensibly speed limited EVs to bring down insurance for younger drivers.

I agree about the performance of EVs being a bit OTT for new/young drivers to safely contain. But, surly that can be sorted with a simple software tweak?

Looking at the EV Database, there are 27 models with a 0-60 of over 11 seconds, the slowest being the Dacia Spring with 19.1 seconds. Equally there are 46 EVs with a 0-60 of 4 seconds and under. The choice is there…

That’s the sort of performance a Mk 1 Leaf has, but not reflected in the insurance premium. The new cheaper Stellantis EVs have 0-60 around 11 seconds too. I wonder if any of those will come with more reasonably insurance premiums.

    The road tax hack.
You don’t have to sorn. Online, you’re asked for the reg and the 11 digit code on the v5c doc, you’re then reminded that your vehicle is already taxed and would you like to go ahead and tax it anyway.
    Yes, please. Job done.

Did this last March, no need to SORN. I have just had the reminder letter from DVLA for another 12 months’ at £0 👌😀

When you approach your boot carrying a trombone, heavy bag full of music stands, mutes, music etc, plus a suit carrier, the powdered tailgate with kick activation is life changing.

True, but many people use it because they are too lazy to raise a simple hatch manually.

I don’t like a powered boot lid either, so you’re not alone! If you get dirty hands when you lift the boot then you know its time to wash your car Tom!

I hope that 22kW AC charging becomes more of a thing. If you’re only allowed to park at Aldi for 90 mins, it would make their AC chargers so much more useful. (The 3 phase ones, anyway)

IKEA chargers are madness – barely get 30 minutes to go round the store before I need to move my car!

There are a few out there, mainly Renault, but some of the German makes, including Smart and BMW. I note with interest that the Zeekr 7X which is launching this year or next year will have 22kw AC charging along with an 800V architecture and above 400kw DC charging.

Our family chose to not buy a Tesla because we don’t want to support Elon Musk nor Trump, whose campaign was partially funded by Tesla profits. That said, I don’t mind if you review the cars. It is up to each buyer to decide if they choose to boycott Elon or not.

I assume you have also stopped using Facebook/Instagra/YouTube, etc as they have all donated mi!lions to Trump’s campaign.

Regarding Tesla/Elon, I think your approach is correct. Tom is spot on – it’s a personal choice. Personally, I won’t be funding Musk and his far right politics, but some will turn a blind eye and that is THEIR choice. For me, you’re not constantly pushing Tesla and aren’t sponsored by them, so your approach is fair, objective and balanced and I will remain a loyal viewer.

If you look up the anti Union activities of Henry Ford you would never buy a Ford car. As for a previous patron of VW!!!!

    2. @northyorkshirechris5735 Avatar
      @northyorkshirechris5735

@@solentbum Again, some are happy to turn a blind eye to Musk’s support of Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage, Milei in Argentina, Trump and, worse still, Alice Weidel of the AfD in Germany (who are effectively neo-N*zis), whilst interfering in the politics of not only us, but across Europe. Much of this is paid for by his profits from Tesla. If you are happy to knowingly do that, good for you, I and many others are not. As Tom said, it’s a personal choice – they just report what cars are there and so long as they maintain that, I’m more than happy to keep watching.

The young driver+EV+insurance portion of the video is interesting and frustrating. With all the safety features, you’d expect EV insurance to be cheaper. Instead, the system is positively forcing people to continue using ICE. Ridiculous.

I turned 76 last summer , my Insurance Bill has gone up even with 52 years without claims! BUT ther is no way I would go back to ICE.

I liked your discussion at the end about towing. We really need to be able to tow two horses and their trailer, and we also need some fairly mild off road capability with it. At the moment we use something from Land Rover, but have no obvious EV alternative. For one of our three cars here towing is simply not negotiable, so a decent wedge of cash for the right car maker and dealer.

We parted with our 2015 Leaf 4 months ago. It was only worth £1800 as a used car but, shockingly, it was worth £2200 for scrap! As you say, the batteries are now worth more than the car! So much for the fears when they were new (and still being peddled by some) that the car would become worthless because the battery would fail!
