Totally agree about the VAG slow reveals. The renders and uncovered concepts were so close to the production cars, there’s really no point having an event with a camouflaged early production car – especially when the interior is covered up!
They’re taking so long, with so many “reveals” there’s a danger everyone will have heard/seen enough, got fed up and bought a Kia or Renault who’ve had equivalent models out for months already.

Guy without a home charger yet: Charge on your normal mains socket overnight, which will cover you for far more than you might think. Then the occasional charge at a charging station (cheapest in the UK is Tesla or Arnold Clarke, it appears) won’t be that costly. Get onto a day/night electricity tariff asap so that your home charging at night is even less but ensure the low-cost time is not too short. 11pm to 8am is ideal for charging on a standard mains adapter.

It might not be worth getting an overnight tariff for a granny charger. Also many electricity companies want a level2 proof before they give you a tariff.

Software reliability coming up alongside all this hardware progress says a lot. Feels like the next competitive edge won’t be range, but how consistently everything just works day to day.

    Absolutely loved this podcast!!!
In regards to home charging, I charged via the granny charger for 10 months, whilst I waited to have my Zappi fitted, along with solar and battery backup.
You obviously need to plan ahead but it was ‘OK’, although it’s much better now I’m properly equipped 🙂
My family doctor only uses her granny charger (every night I might add) and has no interest in fitting a 7kw charger, as she says it meets her needs without the expense…. 😆

My elderly (80) aunt has just bought a brand new Leapmotor T03 for £14k, so she’s also an electric virgin, and it took some effort to convince her that electric was better, cheaper, etc. But she loves it. Still finding her feet with it but it’s a great car, panoramic roof, reversing camera, alloy wheels, great tech at the price. If it had a Ford badge on it and was called the Fiesta, at that price, they wouldn’t be able to make them quickly enough.

Best Easter egg on a car was when I found that mine had a wheel on each corner, 4 in total. You could only find all 4 by laying on the ground otherwise you could only really see 2 at any one time.

    @Glen, reference the looped supply.
Have an EV charger installed, after which the DNO MUST unloop your supply for free. It’s fine to charge the car until it’s unlooped however.
I’ve been charging our Ioniq 5 for 20 months whilst waiting for the DNO to actually get round to unlooping our supply. It’s no problem if you have a charger that offers dynamic charging, as heavy electrical loads will cause the charger to draw less current, so keeping the system safe.

Also making use of night rate electricity is better, as there’s little additional power on at night, and having an EV tarrif is much much cheaper than any other charging location, so it’s definitely worth using home charging instead of public charging.

I’m sure Mercedes had a concept many years ago that had a joystick for the steering which I assume was steer by wire. A quick Google suggests it was the F200 and was 30 years ago.

It’s absolutely crazy that Polestar have allowed this dangerous blackout to happen. I would be absolutely mad if that happened on a new car.

Congrats on the 100! Nice milestone.

Love the podcast/YT posts, Mike that rock intro is superb please make that the opener!!

Steer by wire isnt new, the Cybertruck from “ that brand that no one likes to talk about on EV car review channels” has used drive by wire with 4 wheel steering since 2023… it isn’t new, nor is that ‘yoke’ type steering wheel. At least Merc are catching up.
Everyone likes a fart gag.. guaranteed laugh. 😂
