Kia EV2 vs Renault 4: The £25k EV showdown!

The Kia EV2 is the current opposition in the progressively competitive small EV market, but it has a tough job on its hands: handling the Renault 4, one of Electrifying.com's preferred electrical cars and trucks.

Nicola Hume and James 'Batch' Batchelor put the 2 head-to-head to see which is the better buy. We compare range, charging, practicality, interior, technology, performance, ride and handling, prices and value– and learn whether Kia's futuristic new EV can actually beat Renault's creative retro offering.

The EV2 battles back with as much as 281 miles of range, a longer service warranty and faster peak DC charging, while the Renault 4 is lighter, quicker, more useful and less expensive to lease.

However which one would we in fact invest our money on?

See the complete twin test and let us know which one you 'd pick in the comments.

I always thought Nicola and Batch were a FONT of information 😂

So in the typical Kia way, if you want a heat pump for winter range you have to buy the top spec model which then has big wheels which reduce the range gained from the heat pump.😢😢😢

But in the R4, which has a heat pump as standard, the winter range is likely to suffer more.

Heat pumps aren’t the panacea we originally thought/assumed.

You can spec a heat pump for the EV2, and in cold countries it’s included in low trim levels as well. Also, this R4 is not a base model, and you can configure the EV2 with a sliding glass.

Here in Austria, a similarly specked Kia is cheaper than the R4. When I say similarly – the Kia offers more.

Kia made false statement V2L and V2H don’t come serial. You have to take top 2 specs and order and pay separately. Heat pump is also to order and pay separately. And the end you have to pay ower 35k for a dissent equipment. For that price you can get a new Tesla model Y standard. If you have to choose between Renault 4 and Kia EV2 and the price is not a question you take Renault 4🎉

The one thing I don’t really like about the EV2 is those rear lights, too low (like the Hyundai Kona). The R4 does look very good.

Exactly, the latest Kia are so extreme, sometimes they get it right, many times it is a complete miss.

One thing you always miss …….. as an older driver I wear distance glasses, the two bits of information I want to see clearly in the middle of the smaller cockpit screen are speed and speed limit. In the Renault it’s just too busy to see clearly and on most generic maps the speed limit in particular is so small as to be invisible.
I would really appreciate a comment about this in ALL reviews 🤞

In the Renault you can press the button with squares on the right hand side. That changes the driver display, with one of the options being a really clear speedo only display.

Nicola and Batch back at it! 😂 We’re curious: which side are you on? Are you Team Renault 4 for the style and driving dynamics, or Team Kia EV2 for the tech and warranty?

    2. @Groaznic Avatar
      @Groaznic

@Electrifyingcom Ask Gav if he’s also bothered by the non-monospaced font used in rapidly changing numbers such as in the speedometer which causes re-layout of the digits that don’t change due to the change in the digits that did change, now that’s gonna throw Gav in a deep depression.

I don’t think I’ve ever once deliberately put my R5 into neutral. Hit the power button or open the door and the car applies the handbrake automatically.

Great review, but something that most reviewers miss is to talk more about rear seat space, many of us are buying a “family car” and it would be nice to see how three people fit in the rear seats
