Is THIS the Future of the Vauxhall Astra?

Forget SUVs– Vauxhall is making a statement with the STX Idea, a sensational electric estate that proves household cars and trucks do not have to be boring. However is this the shape of things to come?

Join Electrifying.com's Vicky Parrott for a more detailed take a look at the Vauxhall STX Concept, a remarkable design research study that sneak peeks the brand name's future styling and hints at what's in shop for the next-generation Astra.

With its streamlined, low-slung shape, muscular rear haunches, unique lighting and futuristic aerodynamic functions, the STX Concept is a world away from the normal electrical household vehicle. It's got the percentages of a sporty shooting brake, some seriously clever style information and even pop-out aerodynamic winglets concealed below the rear lights!

However there's more to this concept than striking looks. Vauxhall wishes to reveal that electric vehicles do not all have to be SUVs. A lower, more aerodynamic estate might use greater performance while delivering the functionality that conventional estate-car buyers like.

So, what could make it to production? And could this idea sneak peek the future of the electric Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer?

Vicky takes you around the style highlights, explores the clever information and explains what this amazing idea tells us about Vauxhall's electric future.

What do you believe? Would you pick an electric estate over an SUV? Let us know in the comments!

Reminds me of the Honda 0 series concept, I like this design it looks really good, not too sure about the rear end though.

That makes me think of the 60s and 70s. That’s a good thing.

Love the fact the rear doesn’t slope down. Much more practical for filling the boot. The amount of times I’ve had to leave some things behind on a trip to the tip because it would catch the sloped rear window…
Also, dogs rejoice! No longer hunched in the boot

I’d this was a Chinese manufacturer you’d be looking at exactly what you’re going to get right now. Sadly, legacy manufacturers dilute their concept designs to the point of blandness

I was thinking less about Chinese brands but specifically about Vauxhall. They haven’t made anything interesting for years. I think the presenter was overly generous, bland and boring comes to mind when I think of Vauxhall. Even when they shared a platform with Peugeot for the e208, they delivered an instantly forgotten model

@latsword3513 I think you have accidentally proved Vicki’s point, “bland and boring comes to mind” is your opinion. I bought a Vauxhall Cascada in 2013 and I still own it. A dealer confided to me that if the Cascada had a different badge on it and cost £10k more he could have sold twice as many. The Cascada was just as good as an Audi A5 and only sold 2500 units in six years because it was a Vauxhall.

This needs a much much thicker rear bumper. To reduce the chance of shattering the rear glass in a minor rear end collision.

@5:59 “Opel – the European brand for Vauxhall” !!! Surely, it’s been the other way around for about thirty years now, Vicki? Vauxhall.. is the UK brand for Opel.

I’m not really familiar with British jargon, but this looks to me what I imagine a Shooting Break to look like. Am I right?

My family used to be very much Vauxhall followers, my Grandfather with the Cresta (brother & i used to encourage him to go faster so the speedo would go ‘red’), my Dad with several Victors, Firenza and then Carltons, myself with a Victor & a Belmont. I moved to Rover when i worked for Unipart and in recent years Kia & Hyundai. Although i havent owned a Vauxhall for some years, i do think it would be a shame to see Vauxhall disappear as a brand.

The back is what’s known as a Kammback. Counter-intuitively (unless you’ve studied fluid dynamics) it’s actually more aerodynamic than a teardrop shape, which is why the Prius uses it.

It’s also what’s known as ugly enough to scare children and faint-hearted adults.

    3. @concinnus Avatar
      @concinnus

A teardrop with shallow enough backside slope to avoid flow separation (and no sharp transitions like the Cybertruck) is maximally aerodynamic — see solar racers. But within the practical dimensions of a personal car, Kammback is optimal — see Prius.

I think if they changed the grill to be black more like the current Astra this would be an amazing car. I’d take this over most of the competition I think.

Whenever a company starts messing around with its logo or badge, you know they are in a mess and are out of ideas. Just look at what Jaguar has done. They now have a totally insulting logo with upper and lower-case letters. How is that better than the leaping jaguar they had before?
