FIRST DRIVE: Audi A6 e-tron – the best electric car in the world? | Electrifying

#audia 6etron #audielectric #electriccars

Evaluation:

The A6 is a well-known and popular big executive automobile, and this brand-new, all-electric A6 e-tron has actually got the driving variety, tech and image to actually sway some more conventional purchasers. It might even be the better buy over its nemesis, the BMW i5.

Welcome to the all- e-tron. This big executive has a lot in typical with the Audi Q6 e-tron that we actually enjoyed previously this year, consisting of the very same brand-new PPE platform (also utilized in the Porsche Macan). In fact, we reckon that the Q6 e-tron SUV and Porsche Macan SUVs will be essential rivals to the A6. I know that the A6 is a traditional estate or saloon-ish shaped five-door hatchback– called the Audi A6 Sportback– but if you've got ₤ 70,000-ish to spend on a roomy, long-range electric vehicle for yourself and the household, the Q6 and Macan are as sure to appear as the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE that are the A6's direct non-SUV rivals.

It's not shy of some seriously good competitors, then, however the A6 e-tron has a lot going for it. Not least, its range! The A6 gets 2 battery choices; a 75.8- (usable capacity) or 94.9 kWh pack. In the estate-bodied A6 e-tron that we're focussing on here, those benefit an official WLTP range of as much as 361- or 437 miles, that makes this one of the longest range automobiles in the class.

As I've discussed, the Audi A6 Avant e-tron has actually a terrific claimed series of as much as 437 miles, or 367 for the smaller battery, and if you go for the swoopy Sportback then that creeps up by another 20- to 30 miles or two.

Both the 75.8 kWh usable (83kWh overall capability) battery that you can only have in the entry-level A6 e-tron, and the 94.9 kWh (100kWh total capability) pack that powers every other A6 and the sporty Audi S6 e-tron, are lithium-ion NMC batteries that guarantee excellent longevity and performance.

You likewise get a heat pump as basic, which will aid with effectiveness and range in the winter season. What is disappointing is that there's no word on Audi offering vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging, or vehicle-to-grid (V2G). For a brand name new, hi-tech EV on a brand name brand-new platform, that seems like a substantial missed out on chance given that Hyundai, Kia, MG and Peugeot all offer V2L on cars that cost less than half what you'll spend for the A6. Sort it out, Audi!

Sign up with Tom as he takes to the road in the brand- e-tron for the very first time. Has Audi constructed a winner here? Would you pick it over a BMW i5 or Mercedes EQE? Let us know in the comments listed below.

I sense Audi are on a comeback. Liking this. The new A5 looks pretty nice too.

That 460 mile range is tempting, but way too pricey to sell many.
Soon we will see the first reasonably priced car capable of doing a real world 400 mile plus. Probably with the new BYD batteries. Something like that for about £35k is what the market needs.
I do like an ‘enormous flap’ that closes up when I pull it out. Brilliant. I keep leaving my Scenic flap open, and find it a bit small and dark….

You can get a Scenic that claims close to your 400 mile parameter (about 300 in reality) with a list price of £41k, so you’ll probably be able to get that discounted below your £35k price point

An A2 Etron would’ve been the clever bet

If you told me that this is the new ICE Audi A6, I would believe it. In other words, did the (German) car makers finally understand that they shouldn’t make electric cars deliberately ugly and distinct? A car is still a car no matter what engine it has.

The mirrors reduce aerodynamic drag by up to 5%. At the speeds where that matters we are talking an overall drag reduction of 3-4%. 4% of say, real world 350 miles is 11 miles, not 3!

I checked my notes – Audi’s official figures say the the camera mirrors add up to 7km of range. So 4.3 miles.

Another great review from Tom. This Audi is way better than the EQE. As I don’t have access to a salary sacrifice, it’s a bit much for me and the boot should be bigger.

Hear, hear! I think this looks great too. The EQE – the design is marmite as well. Price is the big thing especially with expected depreciation. They need to incentivise sales by at least reducing interest on PCP and/or subsidising lease offers. Once battery tech improves and infrastructure, I think demand will always be strong enough from then on.

@mra9085  I like the marmite analogy! I do like the look of the EQE but the price and boot are less than ideal.

only problem they are doing equal to Korean tech with Porsche pricing. For an acutual winter country the front light design alone makes them useless and a dealbreaker for me. All the snow will be gathered on the high beam. Same major design flaw is on the new Porsche Macan and also the Q6 e-tron.
Watch the video in its fullest and imagine the car wet or snowy. You basicaly have a nightmare of usability. Can’t wait for a proper review in a northern country in the winter with snow. They laughs are gonna be long and loud.

    A5 even better!
Audi needs to have a convertible as a premium brend.
    Maybe convertible EV?!
Cheaper EV will be a must soon enough!
