BYD Atto 2 FIRST DRIVE: A genuine MG and Vauxhall killer? | Electrifying

#bydatto 3 # #electric cars

Have you STILL not heard of ? The Chinese EV huge plans to sell more automobiles in the UK this year than MINI and Renault– two times as lots of as Mazda. And at the heart of that push is this: the Atto 2.

No daft marine names here– just an Atto number. It's showing up in the UK this summer, ready to take on the brand-new and MG ZS. But does it have what it takes? Or is it just another budget EV with big guarantees?

Here's what you require to understand:

⚡ 2 trims: Active & Increase

⚡ 45.1 kWh LFP battery (50kWh version coming).

⚡ 174bhp motor with 194-mile range.

⚡ 37 min 10-80% charging with 65kW fast charging.

⚡ Rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen, karaoke mode & wise voice control.

⚡ V2L, phone essential sharing, and a heat pump as requirement.

And what about the rate? That's the essential to whether BYD can truly shock the marketplace. Get it right, and brand names like Mazda, , and MG ought to be stressed.

    Way better interior than the atto 3. BYD seem to learn REALLY quick; lots of really good touches that westerners are used to.

    My partner has a Dolfin top spect and the charging speed is not a problem at all because we charge at home and the range is so good that haven’t needed to charge on the go. I can go to Manchester and back from Harrogate and uses less than half of the battery. What I’ve learned to like about the BYD’s philosophy is that Safety is not optional. All advanced safety features are standard across the range. Love that.

      I agree. For western markets it would be nice to have aligned the ‘Ocean’ series with ‘Dynasty’ The Atto could just become the Otter.

      Sarah N Tuned is a lot more knowledgeable, she does mechanical work, and even raises the cars she reviews on a lift to show you the build quality underneath, suspension system, etc.

      The only problem is she’s in America so she doesn’t see a lot of the models being sold in Europe/UK.

    Nicola talks about “where the money has gone” with the relatively-high pricing. There’s a 17% anti-dumping tariff on BYD cars in the EU, so without that, you’d be looking at somewhere around €27,000-28,000 – cheaper than the Frontera.

    Based on the price differential between this and the Atto 3 in Europe, it seems likely that the Atto 2 will come in at well under A$40,000 (€24,000 / GBP 20,000) here in Australia. I like the Atto 3, but this Atto 2 looks very tempting. I’d want the longer-range one, just to get me from Sydney to Canberra without having to charge. It looks like a really lovely car.

    That three-fingered fan and temp control has been rolled out through OTA updates to the Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal here. I don’t know why no-one else has tried anything similar: it’s a great solution. And I agree that BYD’s voice-recognition is spectucularly good. The pull-down menu to turn off the stupid safety systems seems like a great idea too.

    1. @AyeAye-o8t Avatar
      @AyeAye-o8t

      This car is selling for RMB95,000 (€12,500 / GBP11,000 / A$21,000) in China, so even after adjusting for tariffs and transportation cost, BYD has plenty of room to lower the prices.
      At present, they’re simply pricing to competition.

    @blabla-sv4pm

    The car is actually a (good!!) surprise, but the journalist is the real treat in this video. What a brilliant job!!! Keep up and looking forward to the next one. Lots of new EVs coming in the future. Hi from France :-).

    Really solid offering from BYD, such a shame that tariffs are preventing us from getting genuine bargains from the chinese manufacturers. If we could get these things for the same price the chinese pay then it would massively accelerate the transition to electric.

    1. @PaulTC97 Avatar
      @PaulTC97

      tariffs exist cause chinese workers get like 350$/month wages, EU cant compete with such low production costs

    5. @PaulTC97 Avatar
      @PaulTC97

      @@alfrredd Socialism, many regulations and corrupt leaders is what is destroying EU ability to compete. Also EU brands keep making SUVs instead of small cheap hatchbacks cause they make more profit that way. There used to be 9900€ Ford Fiestas, 12000€ renault clio… but now the minimum price of a small car like that is over 20000€.

      Three finger gestures are pointless when all you have to do is ask the car to reduce the fan speed or make temperature 24 degrees. It never fails and you never have to take your eyes off the road.

  15. @Wakabatan Avatar
    @Wakabatan

    Using finger gestures for the aircon is absolutely brilliant, as well as the button customizability.
    If car manufacturers are going to make the touch screen important, then this level of ease of use has to be the minimum.
