Alpine’s A110 Is Going Electric – But Can It Keep The Magic?

The Alpine A110 is going electrical, but can among the very best lightweight cars of recent times keep its magic without a fuel engine?

The French efficiency brand is on a mission to produce the very first real electric-powered cars. It has created an entirely new platform called APP, which will be used for most of Alpine's future cars, from the brand-new A110 to a 2 +2 GT. And with Alpine promising to keep weight down and driving pleasure quite at the top of the agenda, the future looks interesting for this storied cars maker.

In this video, Batch has a look at a style study for the new third-generation A110, and tells the story of APP. We will not be seeing the correct car until late 2027, but this is our clearest idea of the car yet.
Would you buy an electrical A110 and are you as excited as we have to do with the future of Alpine? Let us know in the remarks below!

    Your new shoes look like my old walking ones. Who made you cover them up? Was it Alpine? Renault? J.M.Weston? 😂

    Another fascinating insight into how Renault group are making EVs desirable. Thank you Batch.☝

    Alpine are cooking right now, I want every car in their current line-up!

    If it’s not too heavy, this could be epic. Like many other people, I was always a bit soured on the A110 because all I could think was “shame it isn’t a manual”. But with an electric car, I do think that could genuinely be a winner. If they do it right.

      What does the Renault 5 turbo weigh?
      Thats a carbon car, add the pounds an aluminum structure add and we might begin to estimate what this will weigh

      @TheImperfectGuyThey publicly said it will weigh around 1500kg

    5. @Twin.motors Avatar
      @Twin.motors

      @Likealot77 that’s too heavy… a Tesla roadster was 1200kg 15 years ago.

      And a current Model 3 with 5 seats and overall twice the size weighs 1700kg. So the Alpine should at most weigh 1400kg if they engineered it correctly.

    6:14 That’s because, to me at least, that’s clearly not actually going to be part of the design of the car. You’re not looking at the car, you’re looking at an abstraction of it, designed to evoke the feel of the covering being pulled away. In the same way that the front wheels also clearly aren’t showing what the wheels will actually look like

      I think the batteries inna Tesla weigh the same as 8 adults?
      They could make it light weight but will be incredibly expensive or ridiculous low battery range!

    5. @jamesengland7461 Avatar
      @jamesengland7461

      @PaulPaul-fo8qjthe original Tesla Roadster was under 3,000 pounds/1400 kg and had nearly 250 mile range with old tech. Tesla batteries, I think, weigh about 10 #/4.5 kg per kwh, and a 50-60kwh battery would not be extremely heavy and would give decent range. I wish Tesla had simply continued building and refining the Roadster.

    The european answer to the SC01 from china, we will see just how light they can get it. I also wanted to see Chinese owned Lotus pull this off as well. Geely claims some very high energy dense batteries in development.

    I had been wondering why this kind of battery placement isn’t more common. I get that the skateboard platform is good for keeping the center of gravity low but you hear and read stories about cars getting hits onto their underside and damaging the battery packs all the time. I would imagine that not being such big of an issue with this kind of setup.

    1. @bryandavies6074 Avatar
      @bryandavies6074

      Placing a critical and expensive component at the bottom of a car in the middle of its ‘ramp over’ makes no sense in many situations.

    2. @jamesengland7461 Avatar
      @jamesengland7461

      the battery packs are well armored.

    3. @bryandavies6074 Avatar
      @bryandavies6074

      @jamesengland7461 They are designed to meet and exceed crash tests that require adherence to safety and penetration standards. It does not mean that the external casings are 100% crack proof, nor that they will offer impact protection to all the BMS items within the casing – that can be damaged by substantial shock. (I’ve been watching man diagnose and fix these issues). It means the pack outer offers a reasonable standard of safety. And the laws of physics dictate that a battery pack that spans the distance between two axles is most exposed and vulnerable at the mid point between those axles. Packs that are mounted above or close to axles are less vulnerable.

    @AdvantestInc

    Most EV conversions can lean on instant torque to feel fast, but a lightweight sports car is about agility and feel, not just speed, and that’s far harder to preserve once you add battery mass.

    1. @Twin.motors Avatar
      @Twin.motors

      not if they’re built properly. The original Tesla roadster from 15 years ago weighs 1200kg. The reason why current EVs are heavy is cost cutting and crappy engineering

  15. @Jorgen926 Avatar

    Finally SOMEONE is being brave enough to make something other than a skateboard battery platform. I’ve been saying this for years that is just doesn’t work outside of SUVs. It doesn’t matter if the centre of mass is slightly higher, being able to get your bum and the roof lower means it FEELS better to drive and you get a lower more aero shape too.
    I want to see someone go futher with custom prismatic cells to they can fill a Centre transmission tunnel with battery too and lean into the cocooned vibe

    1. @bryandavies6074 Avatar
      @bryandavies6074

      Well stated. It also provides the opportunity to create a sporting EV with more than a pretence of back seats: one where those in the rear won’t have to have their knees around their chest and their feet contorted because of the lack of space under the front chairs.

    2. @Zobeid Avatar
      @Zobeid

      You mean “finally” after Tesla, after SC01, after Porsche and Audi, after Caterham and maybe even after Longbow by the time this Alpine ships to customers?

    3. @chrisogrady28 Avatar
      @chrisogrady28

      @Zobeid only Caterham have talked about it but still not released, and they aren’t a major brand making a platform for multiple vehicles. I’m not aware that any of those others have done it? With tesla are you taking about the of roadster? That doesn’t counts it was just an elise retrofit they had no choice

    4. @Zobeid Avatar
      @Zobeid

      @chrisogrady28 Project V will be a low-volume production car, but they’re presently in testing with a prototype that looks close to production ready. Porsche will have their electric Boxster and Cayman, and Audi will have their Concept C (probably renamed). Pretty sure those won’t have skateboard layout. It might be harder to find an example of an electric sports car (as such) that does have a skateboard battery. It looks like the industry is going to settle on the convention of a split pack, for exactly the reasons that were said in this video.

  18. @ProTip-r2 Avatar

    I Hope Alpine will make it light.

    So many electric cars now do the 0-100 in 2/3 seconds but are SO HEAVY that they are not fun in corners.

    I would prefer a light and low, electric sport car doing the 0-100km in 4/5 seconds rather than the heavy 2/3 seconds cars.

    Finally, an EV built specifically for driving purists! That silhouette looks gorgeous, and an all-aluminum body means Alpine is actually taking weight seriously. If it handles with even half the poise and agility of the current ICE A110, this will instantly be my new dream car – any class and any money (OK maybe just behind Rimac Nevera⚡⚡⚡⚡)
    Awesome preview Batch and Electrifying crew I eagerly waiting for the first drive review! (hope to see it sooner than the Renault 5 Turbo 3E we are still waiting for 😆😅 )

    3. @Zobeid Avatar
      @Zobeid

      @urbanstrencan A run of 1,000 are being produced for Europe, and there is also production planned for the UK. They’ll probably stay locked out of the USA where I am. But there will be electric sports cars soon from Porsche, Audi, Caterham.
