Believe electrical automobiles are all expensive? Think again. Tom's spotted stonking lease deals on the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric– cheaper than some city cars– and chose to find out if this economical EV is too good to be true.
Vauxhall sent over a top-spec Ultimate version for a long-term test, and Tom's been living with it for a few months. But while he's delighting in the deal, Ginny's not totally sold … yet.
In this video, the group digs into the Astra's real-world efficiency, usefulness and the peculiarities (good and bad) that include it. From outstanding electrical variety to dodgy door manages and crashy ride quality, it's all here.
Is the Astra the reasonable option in a world of costly electric SUVs? Or just a dull estate with a plug? See to discover– and do not forget to like and subscribe. It makes Ginny delighted. Apparently.

I agree with Ginny, the b-roll of the interior showing all those fingerprints….it screams “work” to keep it tidy!

The best feature seems to be the washer for the rear view camera, something Kia really needs to introduce on their cars.

It has been available on lease deals for the price of cars that cost £10k less though. Not sure it is any more, but they’ll be available very cheap used or nearly new.

Tom’s point is about the pcp and lease monthly rates available. List prices are irrelevant these days

@@karmanline2005 I pay cash only for everything.. not irrelevant really.

What is it with Vauxhall with all the black trim and interiors?
I remember when that was only available on the basic trim cars 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Could be really good, but prices here in Slovenia are just too high

Got to feel sorry for people who bought a 2024 reg’d car and are now paying £620 VED. Wait 3yrs. and buy a 2025 reg’d model, less VED and let someone else take the new car hit.

And Ginny dropped £1 in the tin and then immediately said, “Enyaq” again. So she owes the coffer £1.

except they don’t, the luxury VED is only for cars registered after 1st April 25, it’s not retrospective.

I know it’s all personal preference, but I have never ever thought to myself “ooh, I’ll see what Vauxhall I can get for my money…” just not a brand I would ever choose.
With this and the 308 – finally an estate EV that doesn’t cost as much as a small northern house, but even with that good range would an additional 10kwh in the battery have killed them? For the same £££ there are so many 300+ EVs out there, sadly all SUVs

As someone who buys cars as I can’t do monthly lease I see the attraction when you save in fuel costs and don’t see £500 coming out monthly a problem and worry free car ownership. The dealerships do probably want you to take out lease or loans but they certainly never flinched when I’ve said just paying for it. I do think a one to two year old EV is the best idea with depreciation the way it is just now. My first EV will probably be nearly new but will have taken the first year depreciation hit if not more.

We have a Vivaro, and the auto headlights are buried in the infotainment system.
I also hate the fact to turn the high beam on, you pull the stalk back until it clicks. If you aggressively flash your lights, you end up driving around with your high beams on and the auto high beam doesn’t turn it back off!

Glad he likes it…..although most car journalists have become snobs when driving Vauxhall’s. Just an observation!

I have no problem with an analog car in a digital world. Would love to see a bargain base model of the astra electric with analog dials no center screen. Just the very basics. For 25000 euros. That interior to me is a cosy one. Would love to be in a test group for Opel. The climbing gear and fishing gear is mostly allways in my boot.

Its a Stellantis car, so the OBC could destroy itself at any moment. It seems you forgot to mention that.

I haven’t tried the electric Astra ST, but I’ve driven tens of thousands of miles in the PHEV version, the PHEV hatchback version and the 308SW PHEV…
I can see what you say about the interior and it’s definitely not flawless. Sure, the 308 seems nicer and more plush and the pianoblack is a nuisance but I’ll let youse in on a little secret: You don’t often actually touch the dashboard…
Don’t obsess so much about the materials.
You know what you do often touch a lot? HVAC controls… Just for that I’d pick the Astra over the 308 and the Grandland over the 3008.
Also, the Asia gives you a HUD option, which the 308 doesn’t. They just insist their iCockpit IS a HUD. Fa fa it’s nice but, no it isn’t.
In the end, in my experience, Peugeot is more pretentious and doesn’t always deliver (iToggles, for example….) and Opel are less pretentious but tend to deliver a car that’s just easier to live with, at least they are for me. significantly easier.
I’ve been driving around in an E3008 for 4k miles and it’s been (partly) driving me absolutely bonkers! The cruise control buttons are a nightmare and to change the AC temperature and fan speed you’re losing dangerous seconds of attention. It’s just not good. I’m pretty sure I’d have preferred the Grandland, but it wasn’t available to us, so here I am in the Peugeot, getting cross with it.
On topic: I really like the Astra as a daily driver. It has a calmer, less pretentious user experience than the 308 does.
I wish more people would understand that, before they get lured into a Peugeot by something that looks nice in ads but just isn’t as nice to live with.
    That’s my €0,02 at least.

If the Renault 4 is in the same class as this, I would think that is much more of a Barnard’s bargain.

Tom, the auto beam function maybe on the stalk, if you pull the stalk back you can normally flash, but if you push it forward… just a thought, but also, how does this compare to the established MG5 🙂
