does this only apply to cars that have a heat pump?

No. Preconditioning works for vehicles with resistive heat too. Heat pumps are just more energy efficient.

Inflate your tyres to the proper pressure. Slow down — aerodynamic losses are not recoverable. Don’t heat the entire car if it’s just you — some cars like my Kia eNiro has “driver only” heating. Seat heaters work well and are energy efficient. Keep a steady speed. Use regenerative braking, especially in the city. With all those things, I’ve seen real-world city range in my eNiro of over 315 miles on a car only rated for 239.

Agreed, got the niro’s sister from another mother ( Hyundai Kona 65 kwh ) and winter efficiency has been averaging around 3.8 m/kWh ( only done cold driving so far)

All well and good but that doesn’t help when your on an EV tariff. Yes I use my battery to heat the cabin before I get in but I use the battery because it’s been charged on a cheap rate.
