I have been running the Protector 90 as my Hendy Group Long Termer for 6 months now. What have I learnt because time and the huge concern is … will it be staying?

    I’d keep it just for that colour! If it were an EV, then I’d keep it forever. Petrol Pups seem to like riding in it, so please ENJOY it for as long as all of you can!👍

    Once you consider the residuals and the relatively low depreciation, then the costs make a lot of sense.

      This depends in which country you live in . In Oz the depreciation on LR products is more than Jap and Kraut . RRS were selling well 10-15 years back , but it’s GLE and X5 nowadays here .

    I’d have the 110 D300 without any exterior accessory packs. It covers more bases than most cars.

    Great review. I’ve always thought the 90 is the prettier car, but I bought the 110 as the 90 wasn’t out at that time and for me I would still opt for the 110 as I need the space so often. When I got my 110 the new defender was fresh on the market and I fell in love with mine as soon as I saw it in the showroom (blue with black alloys etc..). They were in demand so had to make a quick decision and traded in my D5. The only downside was it has the D200 engine which I had some initial reservations about, but after 3 years it’s been brilliant, including when towing. In recent years I’ve owned the Freelander 2, D3, D4, D5 and Evoque (all reliable btw) and this Defender is far and away my favourite Land Rover I’ve ever owned. The only issue was the noise from the A-pillar covers (I think that was a design flaw on earlier models) but once fixed it never reoccurred. I put off road tyres onto mine and personally I feel it makes the car look ‘complete’.

    Hi Pete – the MY2024 90 has a new manual system on the front passenger seat that makes using the rear seats much more practical – making good use of it on ours. Decided against the adventure pack as we like the clean looks and quieter drive.

    I absolutely love my 110, 2 springers in the back, trips to Scotland twice and it’s not missed a beat. I think I commented on one of your first video’s with this defender that you would find a 90 way to small 😂

    I own a LR DIscovery 5 which has the same engine (3.0D straight six). Each time I get in the car I’m just astonished at how beautiful the engine is. Utterly smooth, very economical and, for the 2.2ton burden that it lugs about, quite fast. A delight to drive.

    Great content and delivery. Best version in my book is 110 X Dynamic HSE P400E, but I am biased as had that for 6 months with no issues – so far so good 😉

    Still think it’s a great looking car but I would do without that side box and just have a ladder on both sides if I was to have the roof rack. Glad to hear you had no issues with the car, personally I think that’s another advantage of that straight six engine, it’s a good well sorted engine which is perfect for this type of car.

    Agree with you totally and we love our D250 XS as well. It handles everything effortlessly from short trips into the local villages to trips down to the south of France. We’ve not got the ladder and roof box and run on the continental road tires and have found it extremely quiet at motorway speeds but as you say road noise is something that you expect with any roof rack. Likewise we’ve now driven just under 20k and have had no issues whatsoever mechanically and have never needed to top up the adblue. Terrific cars 😀

    If you don’t use the rear seats for passengers anyway, leave them stowed down, get a cage for the dogs on one side and have your luggage on the other. Then you don’t have to bother with the moving of the front seats. 🙂

    Nice review Pete. I think for 90% of owners the all-season tyres would be a better bet, rather than the all-terrain tyres you have on this model.

      I had a Gen 7 Celica a few years ago to which I’d fitted 4 winter tyres. After one memorably sure-footed cross-country journey in very snowy and icy conditions, I think 99% of drivers would be better off with a spare set of wheels shod with winter tyres rather than wasting their money on 4wd/4×4 vehicles.

      I had the same thought before getting my 2024 D250 SE. However; The factory fitted Wranglers are just amazing! No road noise and the more aggressive thread pattern really suits the design of the car. Only downside is that they are not winter rated, which is needed when I go hunting in Sweden.

    Bought a 23 110 HSE D300 x-dynamic based on your first review. Have the same kit and agree with most of your comments. It’s a fantastic car. One negative I would add is dashboard reflection in drivers mirror at night is annoying. We did not buy the 75th edition as dealer was struggling selling them and offering mega deals and even with the price crash, we have not lost much as all on our grey car. Not had a single problem but JLR cut back on sound proofing in 23 model year plus a few other bits that we have retro fitted. Down to your review we bought it and sold our 22 Macan GTS and would not sell it so thankyou.

    Great review, had my 2022 Defender D250 90 HSE X-Dynamic for 3 months and absolutely love it. All terrain and I think quieter than the D4 I replaced it with. No issues, love the engine and power and like you said, the confidence And security it gives you. Drove the 130 for a weekend. Chalk and cheese with the 90. 130 was Slow and lumbering but not too bad for such a large car.

      I have the same model and love it, great engine. Also disliked the stop start at first until I reallised you could turn off “Auto Hold” which means it now works flawlessly,

    I have a D300 110 SE on order due to arrive in Brisbane in April 2024. Great balanced review. It’s fair to say the drivetrain in the D300 with the straight 6 diesel engine matched to ZF gearbox has been bulletproof. The question will be electronics over time. In Australia, Land rovers come with a 5-year unlimited bumper to bumper warranty, enough to convince me to sell the 300 Series Landcruiser after 12 months of ownership.

    Love the Defender but my choice would be a 110 and in an ideal world the V8 version 😊 which fortunately for me doesn’t come in green (or I hope not!). I wouldn’t have the adventure pack either. The only Jag/LR 75th anniversary version I love is of the F Type! Brilliant review Ped, and now I’m looking forward to what you have next 👍

    Great informative analysis as usual. Makes my old series 3 look a bit basic. I love the colour and the design and I really hate myself for feeling like that. Think I will stick with my old Cayenne for now though, 4 doors and plenty of room for the dog cage. Well done again.

    Very balanced review. I’d argue the average Defender buyer isn’t going to be washing it themselves. I’d also suggest the average buyer has access to other ‘more practical’ vehicles when needed. Ridiculous really that such a large vehicle can be so impractical, but it’s a fashion accessory for the most part.

    Hi Pete, I have a X Dynamic HSE 90 D250 which we absolutely love. I have had it 6 weeks and done 1000 miles and it is averaging 33mpg with mainly short journeys. The MY24 has a manual front passenger seat which makes access to the rear much quicker. Also the stop start has a “Auto Hold” function which if you switch off makes the Auto stop start work a lot smoother. The engine is superb!

    I love Landrovers; our family have owned a Series 2A, Series 3, and a County 110 in the past when we lived abroad. The only issue I have with the current 90 is the rear space, it may not suit my needs, the previous 90 had more usable space, though I believe that layout is no longer legal. You are right; for me, the 110 is the way to go.
