Volkswagen ID.3 GTI: Has VW Saved the GTI?

The GTI has gone electric. Following the ID. Polo GTI, Volkswagen has actually exposed the brand-new ID.3 GTI– and this one is serious about performance.

    I have always been a huge GTI fan from the MK1 (even through the poor MK4 era). I’ve always loved the ID.3 exterior, and now that the interior features a much more classic VW design, I can see myself finally getting one. Of course, it needs to be the GTI, finished in classic Golf silver with the red stripes! I am really liking this mix of new ID tech and old-school VW styling. VW may well be back after all.

    Wasn’t it the point of the GTI from the off that it took the family hatchback and made it more exciting?! So saying it’s now too much of a family car seems an odd statement!

      True! Though perhaps in size more so than purpose. Smaller cars are generally a little more agile and tossable. There’s the ID Polo for that after all

      Unless they’re discontinuing the ICE version, why not a whole new name? Gotta be a ground-ball-and-stick sport, LaCrosse is taken, but Croquet seems wide open.

      Next stop is the SSP platform, entirely new platform. Coming around 2028/29, supposedly the Audi A4 will be the first car on that platform.
      And thats when the ID.Golf will come, probably as an EV wagon as well which we have been waiting for.

      My Mk1 Gti (which I no longer have) was a great car – except for one very important thing…. the brakes. Early RHD versions didn’t have a brake servo!

      @mikewhitehead50 So that’s why the headline of the video intro is the numbers, it’s got a new dash, steering wheel and a gti mode, apart from that it’s the same underneath, oh yeah it’s probably 15 k more expensive 💵💵💵💰💰💰

    Why have the GTI button? If it’s a GTI why isn’t it a GTI ‘as standard’ rather than have a button to turn it into the car it’s supposed to be? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have a ‘whoa there!’ button instead to stop it being a GTI and it’s GTI as default?

    VW Group is definitely striking back, first with the simply awesome iD Polo (especially GTI) , nor this is a proper hothatch “EV Golf GTI”, to bad VW didn’t use this opportunity not just to introduce GTI to the iD 3 range but actually rename 3 to the iD Golf👏⚡⚡⚡

    The exterior design changes have given it a more mature, better-integrated look that aligns with the VW brand image. And this red color looks absolutely stunning on it! The dashboard and center console design are also much better, and the physical buttons are top-notch! Kudos to VW for the job well done!

    How many variants of these little cars do they have?!

    The classic look for a Volkswagen GTI is the Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTI in black with red trim around the grill. My dad had one and it was absolutely amazing.

    They should have stuck to the same colour scheme of that black with red trim with this ID.3 GTI, otherwise it’s just not got the image of a GTI. If Volkswagen wants to associate with that previous image, then make it look like it.

    I drove my ’85 GTI for 16 years. I would love to own one of these if I wasn’t 70 years old.
    As for the electric drive train, as Mando says “This is the way.”
