Renault Twingo vs BYD Dolphin Surf: Which Small EV Wins?

The brand-new Renault Twingo is coming to the UK– and it might be one of the most interesting cost effective EVs yet. But how does this small, lightweight electric car stack up against among its closest rivals, the BYD Dolphin Surf?

Nicola Hume and Harry Benjamin put the two head-to-head, comparing whatever from range, charging and practicality to interior area and driving enjoyable. The Twingo is simply 3.79 m long, weighs around 1,200 kg and uses a tiny 27.5 kWh battery– yet Renault declares up to 163 miles of range. The Dolphin Surf is larger, heavier and has a 43.2 kWh battery, providing it approximately 193 miles of range in the variation we're checking.

However larger doesn't necessarily imply much better. The Twingo's light weight, creative sliding rear seats and fantastic manoeuvrability might provide it the edge– while the Dolphin Browse counters with more space, more power and faster charging.

      I don’t know if it’s like this everywhere but here the 18″ on the Twingo are optional. They come with 16″ as standard which is absolutely what i would go for. On my Ioniq 6 i also went for the 18″ instead of the 20″ wheels. If it was only looks i can see the bigger wheels looks nice but the downsides are just too much for me. Harder over bumps with a higher likelihood of cracking them in a pothole. The consumption goes up(quite a bit sometimes) and the tires are much more expensive.

      It’s a design thing. All cars look better with bigger wheels. Unfortunately the ride is compromised so not so good in the real world. Certainly with the crap state of our roads..

      From memory, I think the _new_ Dacia Spring will be available with 15 or 16 inch wheels with no options for alloys, steel only.

      It’s based on the same bones as the Twingo, just deliberately designed to be more boring to avoid cannibalising Twingo sales and to target a wider audience than either car alone.

      So if you want smaller wheels with fatter tyres, consider it.

      The price of tyres for big wheels. The tyres on my MG4 are coming up for replacement. The 18″ wheels mean good quality tyres will cost over £750. Ridiculous.

      Same. Parking for me is bad enough let alone in a car twice as long as it needs to be. SUVs may work in America or Australia with wide open roads, but a narrow street in the UK they can be more problematic.

      Same here in Malta the 2024 Dacia Spring is perfect for us (3.7m) anything above 4m is insanely difficult.

    The BYD also has a 5* EuroNCAP rating, which is very surprising for such a small car. It also has electric seats, which is so random for its class!

      Those raiting take the size & weight of the car into account, so the bar is lower for a smaller car.

      @davidpottage6402they don’t lower the bar just because it’s a smaller car. It still undergoes the same tests and needs to meet their latest requirements. None of its competitors have a rating this high, like the Dacia Spring has a 1 star rating. Even the more expensive class above like the Inster and Renault 5 got 4 stars.

      The Geely EX2, a similar price, is 5* ncap and has considerably more room than either of these, including a very large frunk, and has an 8 yr warranty! A lovely cream interior too which gives it a premium and spacious feel. 0% PCP finance at the moment.

      A difficult car to beat imo.

      I test drove one last week, it was a lovely car, my wife fell in love with it after travelling less than a mile…so I guess one will be ordered imminently 😂

    In France we get a 4 to 6K euro bonus buying a Twingo.
    I got mine (techno + 500e charger) for less than 16K.

    Not even a competition the Renault Twingo takes it for me on nostalgia alone, the first gen being one of the first cars I have ever driven. And than you add simply stunning exterior, nicely done interior + being made here in our beautiful sLOVEnian= you just can’t beat that😅😊😅.
    I hope that Renault releases special “I Feel Slovenia” edition like it used to do it with the Clio made here👏💪
