We back. Evening everybody. They have same idea for years to do it in the Netherlands for every car and skip the roadtax. Well unless they will skip the tax we pay over the fuel, then I am oke with that. Love the new intro.

I will say this if they go through with this pay per mile it won’t stop at Ev’s.

ICE vehicles already pay per mile. It’s called fuel duty.

@neilbridgeman7768once they get a system up and running, they’ll bring hybrids, plug in hybrids, diesel and petrol on board, in that order. Too tempting for greedy government.

@neilbridgeman7768 for now, when it gets closer to the end of sales of ice then it will be an extra stick on top of everything else.

Collecting fuel duty on petrol is a well oiled machine. The government won’t scrap it.

Pay per mile has been talked about for a long while. Starting with EV it will spread to other cars. Typical of government to send us down a road and then charge us for the pleasure. Remember they did the same with diesel 20 years ago.

The only certainty is that tax on motorists will continue to rise whatever you drive and that any impact of road charges on EV sales will not be reflected in the targets that manufacturers have been set.

Let’s remember most of these MPs haven’t worked for a living. Just studied politics because they couldn’t do anything useful.

Motorists are an easy target, it’s another nail in loony Labours coffin .
I read that the pay per mile could also apply if you drive in France under some sort of government agreement.😮

Love to know how they plan on enforcing this if you go on a big European trip. Are you going to have to somehow declare mileage at the crossing so you don’t get billed for mileage covered in Europe? Just doesn’t make sense – can see people developing tools to roll back mileage and for folks with 4yr or older EV’s, they wont care if the mileage is not accurate

Nothing to do with Labour the conservatives had this idea back in 2010 under Cameron for all cars, you can’t have electric cars paying no fuel duty

As a EV owner, we all know that the funds from fuel duty has to be replaced. Just like VED was going to be imposed. But to do it before 2030 is plain stupid. It will not help sales (although will still be cheaper to run a EV when home charging) It will stop many from switching. I’m also wondering just how this PBM is going to work? As to charging away from home. The issue is that unless Gov is going to cut VAT 20% then they can do nothing. As the CPO are funded by investments groups who want returns on their investment. Just like many other utilities, & we all know what they cost…

Let’s look at this EV pay per mile in another way. Fuel duty for cars raises around £17bn for the government. But the government provides the fossil fuel industry subsidies of approximately £17bn. I can’t see how you can justify those subsidies when nobody is using fuel. So, as fuel usage reduces, you should be looking to reduce the subsidy. Since they are approximately in balance, then as EV usage goes up and fuel duties fall, you simply reduce the subsidies by the same amount. This keeps everything in balance and payments are done centrally. There is no need for complex collection processes which will be costly to set up and administer and will also be open to manipulation and further checking and auditing costs.

A cynical person might suggest that this tax was hinted at as a way to reduce EV sales, deliberately forcing manufacturers to be hit by ZEV fines.

  10. @gordonmackenzie4512 Avatar
    @gordonmackenzie4512

They were trying to pretend that fuel duty is used to build and repair roads. It isn’t, and neither is VED, used for this purpose.

Why is everyone so surprised at the introduction of tax on EVs. They been free of road tax to incentivise purchase, but it was inevitable it would come sooner or later! The pay per mile taxation will likely be a pilot that will transfer to all other vehicles in due course.

I purchased a year-old Jaguar S-Type in 2000. On the wiring diagram there was a connector in the boot for the Electronic Road Pricing Module. This was to collect charges from your bank account when using certain toll areas just as the Emovis tags do in France etc. There seems to be a bottomless bucket available from the government to stick a pole in the ground and strap a box of electronics to it to take your hard-earned cash.

If they charge pence per mile on hybrids , these are being hit twice once on fuel duty and then per mile . This is unfair and will force drivers back to petrol or diesel .

  17. @chrisp4899 Avatar

Pay per mile will start with ev because less people will bother protesting the decision and once it’s in it will hit ice cars , it’s a major kick in the teeth considering they have to pay road tax already 😮

The sad thing is the government has no strategy, no plan and that means no clear management of change. Its not hard but needed to be in place at least 5 years ago.

As we all know the taxs would come and no one would be happy…..what does seem to be missing – road pricing is the best way to go – high users pay more, certain roads cost more, it could even get to time of day pricing, the tech is ready and the connectivity of your phone is there. The error here is not having and presentign a clear overall strategy for vehicle taxation – the whole lot needs to be reviewed and represented, phased in transition to full road pricing with bands for inefficient vehicles or class of vehicle.
PS remember the discussion and development for your first intro so nice to see an update many years later, and also fantastic to be on the cusp of 250k subs….quality rises.
