This is the all-new Renault 5!

The initial Renault 5 was launched in the 1970s, but it went out of production method back in 1996. Nevertheless, it's now been resurrected in the form of an EV! The concern, does the brand-new Renault 5 justify the legacy of its predecessors? Let's take a better look …

Beginning with the outside style, there's no rejecting that Renault has got it bang on! It's modern-day yet retro, with several design hints taken from the design of the original Renault 5. Along the side, you get contrasting side mirrors and skirts, and there are different colour roofings available too! At the back, there are contoured tail lights and fake vents that harp back to the Turbo 2.

The retro-modern style continues through to the interior. There's a double digital dial-infotainment screen on the dash that looks wise and incorporated, while there's a striped design throughout the rest of the dash to assist give it some meaning. There may be some difficult, scratchy plastics within the cabin, however you have to remember this is still an entry-level vehicle. The good news is, there's also a choice of physical buttons on the centre console! The seats not only look retro and cool, but they're comfy as well!

There are 2 power output choices for the Renault 5. The entry-level is the Urban, which provides 120hp, 225Nm, and has a declared 0-60 time of 9 seconds. It likewise has a claimed variety of as much as 190 miles. Then we have the Convenience, which delivers 150hp, 245Nm, and a 0-60 time of 7.9 seconds. The claimed range of this edition is 248 miles.

The entry-level Renault 5 starts at β‚€ 23,000, increasing to β‚€ 29,000 for the range-topping edition. So is it the best little electric cars and truck you can purchase for under β‚€ 30,000? You'll need to stick with Mat and see on your own!

I’m impressed by how a mainstream brand like Renault has better understood the issue of usability (screens & physical buttons), and how the German premium brands have completely strayed from the trend, with their haptic controls and “only” screens… and the designs are now copies of Jaguar.

@@Triod_999 I’ve had one older Renault and I own newer model as a daily and that audio stalk is really clever. No need to take eyes off the road to change song / volume / station (if you use FM/DAB, I dont’t). I have owned several cars that have those buttons on the steering wheel and no matter how many times I used them my muscle memory never got perfect at finding the specific button. On some Germans I always changed the volume when I was about to skip a song. I had to quickly look at the steering wheel to see what I should press..

The criticisms about space are a little unfair. This is a city type EV for a couple with kids as a second car, not a real family car for long range trips. I owned 3 ICE Renault 5s in succession in the late 70s and early 80s including a Gordini Turbo. I am not an EV fan but I would absolutely buy one of these as a runaround car.
