It's time for a diesel vs electrical showdown!

We've got Mat in a tuned last-generation 335d Touring, and it's going up against a and a !

So let's see how the vehicles compare. Beginning with the 335d, it's powered by a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo diesel that's had a stage two tune. As an outcome, the 313hp and 730Nm power output have been increased to 386hp and 812Nm! Power is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automated gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,735 kg.

On the far side, we have the . It's packing a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo diesel that can produce 340hp and 700Nm of torque. Power is sent out to all 4 wheels by means of an 8-speed automated transmission, and it ideas the scales at 1,870 kg.

Then finally we have the Tesla. It's the long-range edition, and it comes geared up with 2 motors that can put down 490hp and 490Nm. Naturally, power is sent out to all four wheels, and it weighs in at 1,840 kg.

So how will this one play out? Could the tuned nab it? Or will it be a simple win for the Tesla? There's just one way to find out … LET'S RACE!

    Mat definitely made a jump start, the reaction time cannot be zero, but wheels of his car began to spin simultaneously with the movement of hand

      If the wheels are spinning while the hand is moving then he did not jump, it only counts as a jump if the hands were not moving

    It was close but Matt jumped. If you go frame by frame using the < and > keys, the car has a slight roll about 3 frames before the hands start to move. Which means Matt was coming off the brake even before that.

    11:04 Watch frame-by-frame (hit the ‘.’ key) and you’ll plainly see Matt’s car was edging forward for 5 frames before the starter’s hands moved.

      @@salehanoori308 that is a jump start in motorsport. You cannot have the car move 2 frames after the signal, so even if you time it right it’s still a jump start infringement as it’s obvious you moved before (including the body and mechanical lags)

      Yeah but it’s everything to have fun. It’s easy to see how diesel engines (specially the tuned ones) are so polluting. The Tesla is virtually silent and has “zero” emissions, bravo. Even if the energy comes from coal or whatever, it’s much easier to filter that locally than on a city with thousands of vehicles.

    As some people already mentioned recently, you should get a set of starting lights with random timing to make the races fair. Mat probably jumped as some people who counted the frames commented, but his reaction was very nearly spot on because he’s already so used to the launching procedure by a person.

      That is a TERRIBLE idea – we’re here to see how fast the CARS are, not the reaction times of the drivers. For the most part they nail the starts, and that’s because they CAN time it based on the hand drop and the lead up. Without that you’d constantly have people leaving later the others and the starts would almost never be at the same time.

      I/we care about the CAR’S performance not the drivers. TERRIBLE IDEA.

    Matt’s was lucky to have got the timing so right. It was a very fine line between perfect start or jumping the start.
    But hats off to Sam for being such a sport. He is my new absolute fav over and above Matthew. Loved the banter between those two.

      in any motorsport that is a jump. there is always a reaction time put there so even if you time it right and guess it – it’s still a jump. you have to react to the start, not guess it
