      @Gong huh, I confused the shares: porsche owns 45% and rimac owns 55%. I thought it was VW 55% and rimac 45%. So technically, Bugatti could have also been implied to be covered with e-fuels by VW. Thanks for the correction.

      They don’t deal with the NOx emissions problem though. The electric car carbon footprint is questionable but they do result in much improved air quality.

    There is just one important problem with the video: the e-fuel exception has not been added to the law yet. They intend to do that within the next few years, but there is no guarantee that it will definitely be added. As written today, the law only permits EV’s and hydrogen for category B vehicles after 2035.

      Efuels are best for long range vehicles doing fast journeys over 300 miles in a day and those carrying significant payloads of luggage or goods. Rail travel is uneconomic for everywhere that doesn’t already have a railway infrastructure. Electric vehicles are for efficiently doing slow, short-distance transport.

      There will be a mixed environment of compact EV with less range and endurance than the current high-priced luxury segment and synthetic hydrocarbon vehicles for when it is necessary to travel far and fast with quick refueling stops.

      When the immense cost and impracticality of scaling up to an adequate country-wide electricity recharging network is fully understood, then the cost and effectiveness of scaling up efuels instead and prioritising them for aviation, long-range transport and for use in rural regions becomes very attractive.

    Germany was fighting to extend the deadline for ICE powered vehicles. Synthetic fuels are still going to create pollution. JCB has been developing hydrogen ICE (H-ICE) engines for their plant machinery. Harry’s Garage was recently visiting JCB. They originally started with modifying existing engines, but due to the technical challenges, they’ve had to design an all-new engine for H-ICE. Significantly quieter than diesel, with H2O being the only emission out the exhaust. The challenge is capturing hydrogen cleanly and for the cost to be similar to current fuels.

      @ion Z If the generation of electricity creates waste heat why would you not use it and instead choose to heat the car from the electricity?
      Why turn off clean generators when too much is made rather than use that energy?
      Why use a very inefficient (and filthy, harmful to make) storage method for any unused electricity?
      Why waste energy dragging half a car worth of extra weight everywhere with you?
      If you want to go on about whats more efficient why use a wind turbine to make electricity when you could just put sails on every car?
      Sometimes the ideal for efficiency or for any one goal looks very silly when put into context of the real world.
      Very few things are ideal which is why we have something called pragmatism.

      @Turborider Show me the battery powered excavator that can run 12+ hours a day in any conditions with minimal or no breaks.
      It makes little difference whats efficient and what isn’t is the efficient one simply can’t do the job.
      The most efficient fridge is one that doesn’t have to cool things down but you’re not going to enjoy your milk very much after a couple of days.

      @Matt H No, we don’t. The UK, and Europe for that matter, does not have the power generation capacity to support full EV. We barely have enough for what we have right now and cannot deal with any shocks to the grid.

      @carnage E-fuels are completely synthetic fuels made from water hydrogen and atmospheric CO2. That’s why their carbon footprint is 0. Because they use the CO2 they produce (by compustion) to create new fuel, it’s basically recyclation (you only need energy – a lot of it – to produce the fuel).

      F1 will be using it from 2026, when Ford and Audi enters. This still doesn’t change anything about EVs. E-fuels will be way to expensive for a long time.

    It’s worth to mention that cars on E-fuels may be carbon neutral but they won’t be zero emmision vehicles because in combustion process in earth atmosphere harmful NOx particles will still be formed. Don’t see it getting cheaper than EV’s either but the technology itself is really interesting. In the end majority of people will choose a cheaper option so we will see how it will turn out.

      EVs are also not as green as people think. In many countries (most I suppose), the energy needed to charge EV, is not from renewable energy sources. Same for manufacturing processes etc. ICE on efuel and EV is the future, so people can choose. EV only is a terrible mistake.

    I’m impressed that I found that this amazing experimental Porsche plant is in our country by watching Carwow.
    This is not even mentioned in our news channels or papers.
    Btw, it’s a paradox that they are thinking in something to replace electric vehicles in a country that have just a couple hundreds in their roads and almost no charging stations.

    Hey Mat, have you thought of doing a video asking traffic cops how they’ll cope with BEV patrol cars? I saw an episode of Channel 5’s Motorway Cops and given they constantly criss cross the county – racking up the miles – I wondered what they’d use to do their job after 2030? Surely they do a lot more than 300 miles in a shift!
