New Honda Civic Type R review: Is it really better?

The time has actually finally come for Mat to get his hands on the !

So let's take a look at what you get with 's all-new hot hatch. In regards to the design, it's quickly recognisable as the rather of the regular Civic. Up front it comes with a vent in the bonnet, red badging across the grille, more vents and broader wheel arches. Around the back, you'll find an enormous rear wing, combined with a deeper bumper and even a diffuser!

On the within, the is quite damn striking. It includes red carpets, red floor mats, red ambient lighting, and red sports seats! It likewise features bespoke digital dials with LED shift lights, and you'll discover a guiding wheel covered in phony suede and red stitching. There's metal trim around the centre console, and naturally, it comes with a brushed aluminium equipment knob.

So with numerous changes to the looks and interior, you 'd expect a whole lot of modifications under the bonnet, right? Well, not precisely. The new Type R is geared up with the very same 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo as its predecessor. Nevertheless, it a minimum of includes a new turbocharger and straighter exhaust, which all-in-all helps it produce 329hp – 10hp more than before! However that's not all, you'll also get 420Nm … 20Nm more than in the past.

Another thing has increased compared to the predecessor. It's the price, with the new Civic Type R beginning with ₤ 47,000 – ₤ 12,000 more than its predecessor!! So is it worth it? You'll need to sign up with Mat for this all-new evaluation and see for yourself!

@Tomoyo0827  this sounds like a comment from someone thst doesn’t kmow cars……..only the last generation had more in your face styling. Certainly if Lamborghini. Ferrari, Porsche etc can do the same so can Honda its childish and showy on a Honda on overpriced 6 figure cars? No issue lol……this new one looks nice but still has that tacked on useless spoiler but hey it’s YouTube comments are supposed to be ridiculous. Silly and childish…….you fit right in

Had an EP3 Type R since I was 20. And for the past 17 years it’s served me impeccably well. This is the only one since I’ve liked the look of.

EP3 has hydraulic steering and the newer models has electric so you have very limited or none at all steering feel. I’m also not a fan of turbo charged engines unless it’s a V6, V8 or bigger so it has low end torque and there’s minimal lag. If you wan’t a Type R with more hp get a NA one and supercharge it.

As a current FK8 owner I’m not convinced it is worth an extra £14,000. You could get a tidy EP3 for that.

    1. David Kelly Avatar
      David Kelly

Why would you want an ep3? Rubbish steering, handling is bad, zero steering feel and it looks like breadvan

    2. Dave Morris Avatar
      Dave Morris

I also have an Fk8 and this car isn’t worth an extra 14 grand. Also it is unobtainable. Unless you took out a PCP deal and put a deposit down before it was released so you couldn’t test drive one first it’s hell of a gamble. My dealer actually told me that I wasn’t eligible as I bought my cars outright.

Was really looking forward to this, planned my current deal to end after this had been out for a couple of years (even Honda can suffer from early version weirdness after all) as one last ICE hurrah before going electric. And then they announced the price… Sure they’ll sell all of ’em even at £47k plus but it’s WAY too expensive in my book. You’re in full spec M135 territory there which is just ridiculous.

People comparing the type r to a45s and BMW’s/Audi’s just don’t get it, the type r is fun, that German tat sends me to sleep, I can see the attraction if you like comfort and a bit of lazy straight line umph, but not if you actually like driving properly.

It looks really good but the price … I don’t know if you can even find it at MSRP price . At 50k we go into a whole new level . Probably the right price should be around 35-38k ? But that’s just me . There is something in this Type R which makes it stand out from the rest . But generally Honda looks really good . Nice review !

@Matthew overstyled, what like a gt3 rs or a kambo huracan or an evo 6 or a Lancia delta the list goes on, there designed for performance not plain Jane.

    4. jkliao648 Avatar
      jkliao648

@sean simmons Doesn’t change the fact that they are overly styled to many people’s like. All of those cars you mentioned, none of them had 3 spoilers. I’m sure there will be people out there liked the old type R. But that doesn’t mean people can’t have opinions. To me, this new gen is the perfect balance of boy racing and performance. Flamboyant with that massive rear wing but not to a “pimp my ride” level like the previous one.

£47k for a Civic. Wow, just wow. Worlds gone mad. I know that the price of things have skyrocketed but even so, come on. 20 years ago i bought a brand new EP3 Type R for £16k. Let that sink in…

  19. Richard Beck Avatar
    Richard Beck

It looks amazing and I love the fact that it is manual but paying just shy of 50k feels a bit too steep. I mean you can get a 3 year old 718 Cayman for sub 50k or a Giulia Q sub 45k or an manual M2 sub 35k. I know they aren’t hot hatches or brand new, but I think I would still take one of the latter over a brand new type r

    1. Ben S Avatar

You’d need to drive one to fully understand.. expensive, but about more than figures on a page

    2. Richard Beck Avatar

I have at 2017 manual m140i that is tuned to 444hp, which cost me 19k. Can it really be that much more fun than what I already have? I get I can’t 100% say it isn’t, but at 50k it will be at least 4 years before it’s gets to a price I would consider giving it a chance

    3. sean simmons Avatar
      sean simmons

    4. Chris Elliott Avatar
      Chris Elliott

@sean simmons the fl5 has wiped the floor with the fk8 on track… If you want straight line fast you don’t waste money on a type r.

    5. Phil C1 Avatar
      Phil C1

@Richard Beck Maybe I can help. I had an S2000, a Civic FN2 type R then went sensible before getting a 2017 M140i manual. I sold that in in 2019 after a break in to nick it!
The B58 is a superb engine, i think its the best of its type available. As the other post said though, if it is straight line performance, no competition buy BMW but having owned 2 vtec 2.0 engined Honda’s, both were more exciting to drive on b roads. Hot Hondas have proper M car levels of excitement vs lets say the M140i. Manual gearbox on both were far superior to BMW.
I would take the new Type R over an M240i x drive I think if it was around £40k but it is not. I reckon a future 2 year old one with low mileage might come in maybe late £30k or so. If that happens and its red…I’ll get one. If you swapped an M140i you would.not be disappointed. Might miss the 500nm of torque but 420 isn’t bad at all for a 4 pot and if you have a family, practically is king in a Type R!

  20. Tom Williams Avatar
    Tom Williams

Agreed, far too expensive compared to FK8. I like the distinctive looks of my 19 reg FK8 in which the body coloured wing does not look too out of place in Polished Metal colour. I like the car even more now the original oem Continental Contact 6 tyres, all with 3m tread depth at 15k miles, have recently been replaced with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tyres. The Michelin tyres have a more dampened steering feel, which I prefer, they are quieter, more comfortable & do not chunk when turning in cold weather. Michelin do not recommend their use below 5 deg C but I had to use my car today when temperature was minus 3 deg C & car felt secure driven sensibly. I have a Honda space saver spare fitted which does not reduce the boot space by much. Rather pleased the FL5 is much more expensive than FK8 as it will help my car retain its value. Being a mature driver I prefer the muted exhaust sound of my FK8 to a raucous anti-social sound.

    1. pfunkle Avatar
      pfunkle

I am definitely looking for an FK8 in a few years when my Fit gets a lil too long in the tooth! Absolutely in love with the styling and hopefully the prices will slowly go down over time.
